​@@HoundHuggerDIY I'm just curious, isn't the metal mesh on the sides potentially harsh against the dog's nose? Or is the dog's nose tough enough not to be affected? I'm inclined to weave strips of fleece into the sides to make them cushy - unnecessary? 12:45 those temporary ends can be tied together in knots on the outside of basket so easily. The fluffy ends sticking out are chewable/good for pulling/dragging the basket around/playing with if they were somewhat longer [rolled up with a treat inside and tucked into hole on outside of toy as additional challenge]?! lol If I was a dog, that's what I would do with them... woof! {I don't have a dog/pets to test these questions on, but I like to make toys/blankets for Comfort for Critters charity/Tails pet shelter in DeKalb IL [USA]} This idea would work with a homemade rope/rag basket too, I'm guessing [soft and flexible would make easier/more challenging?]! I just love watching pets work their snuffle toys, makes me laugh every time! I would watch those videos of your pets at snuffle-play too cuz theyre cute and funny. @@CrescentMoonPye Great questions! There is a protective coating on the metal mesh baskets, so they really shouldn't hurt a pup's nose at all. Of course, these toys should be used under supervision to ensure nothing in the toy is damaged or ingested during playtime. (If left unattended, some pups could chew and swallow bits of the fleece, or chew off the protective coating, etc.) Love the idea of using rope baskets! That's genius! Whatever you use, we'd love to know how they turn out. How thoughtful of you to make these for shelter dogs - you definitely have a heart of gold! Thanks for the very kind words. TMI time... skip reading this if you're sane: I've never had a dog/cat [sm.pets - birds&hamsters&rabbits&fish, etc. all I was allowed to have as a kid - next-door neighbor had an insane mini-Schnauzer named Schotzie tho [pretty much untrained], that I walked every day or so and played with whenever I could, throughout grade-school]; Can't have a big pet in my rental apt. so I go to the pet shelter to pet pups or play with them when I have time... but I love animal behavior/mental health [therefore I love all animals, lol] ... so I rely on what u2 are telling & teaching me/showing me proper way of making up new toy designs for bigger pets because I don't have a handle on unobvious dangers/what they should or shouldnt have/what's not safe for them. So I copy your logic to make/adapt safe toys. YAY! When I saw my first 'garden plot' snuffle mat 2yrs ago on amazon, I fell in love, lol!!! Snuffle toys rule, I'm obsessed! I don't have a dog, I don't have excess money, I do have time, and I'm an artist so I'm never without new snuffle ideas/images in my head. But pet parents also need de-stress stimulation, so when they monitor pet play/toys they should enjoy looking at the fun designs [since humans are mainly visual and the dogs couldnt really care less about art - the cute themes/designs are really for us humans, we know that]. So I figured in my design-extremist way that snuffle mats could be made like high-art-hooked-rugs with 1" strips of fleece hooked 1.5" high [good height to hide kibble?] in polyester loose-weave broadcloth; or labor-intensely poked into layers of fleece backing [currently experimenting with best method, I need to buy a grip-frame to make this all much easier/more viable since I haven't hooked rugs before, only studied how to make them]. Then I intend to secure the loops by sewing a running-stitch through the rows of loops on the top-side so the dogs cant yank them out like spaghetti. Its a pain, but it must be done because pups are naughty. And I don't know if standard rug-glue is pet-safe if they ate it. I realize its absolutely nuts to put so much time into a kibble rug, but I cant help it. I think the Snuffle Art [what I call it] should exist outside of my head but I'm slow at creating/experimenting/researching/learning about safety details-materials. Just think, after you shake the leftover kibble out of the mat, you can hang it on the wall. 😁 It'll make your wall smell like dogfood, but so what - the mat's pretty! Pets & toddlers & adults do silly things if you don't keep an eye on them, lol! Puppy-Hugs! (I adore Sight Hounds. @@CrescentMoonPye LOL you are totally our kinda people! Hilary and I both grew up with all kinds of dogs around the house, so puppy fever is "bred" into us and all the crazy DIY things we love to do! You are soooo right - snuffle toys are amazing. They can do so much for dogs and they're super fun to make. Sky's the limit when it comes to designs and the wall art/snuffle mat idea is a great one! Mats do take quite a bit of time, so that's why we've been creating kits for smaller snuffle toy options. But if you have the time to put into a mat, it's totally worth it! Just to be safe, I would stay away from glue and tie fleece/fabric in place or use needle and thread instead. Let us know how your snuffly adventures go! Happy crafting!

Absolutely you could use flannel or any fabric that doesn't fray.

Great question, Trisha! It's best to play this game together with your dog, keeping an eye on them to keep them safe as they look for treats. Carrying the basket isn't a problem, but chewing on the basket or tearing and swallowing the fleece may cause problems. Once the basket is empty, you can put the game away and save it for another day. Or you can add a few more dry treats or kibbles and let your furry friend play again. It just depends on how many treats your pup has eaten that day and how big your dog is. Treats tend to have a lot of calories, so it's important that your dog doesn't fill up on snacks. Ideally, your pup will have a limited time with this game each day, so that he/she is excited each time you bring it out for them to play with. Hope this helps! Thanks for the kind words! 😊🐕🦴
