3 Dollar Tree Meals: Shelf-stable edition!
A lot of you have told me that your Dollar Tree doesn't have a refrigerated/frozen section and wanted to see meals that didn't use those items. I was happy to oblige, so here are 3 dinners you make with shelf-stable ingredients!
The very last meal I did cheat on quite a bit, but that was to make sure my family got the proper calories/nutrition. I made a mistake and didn't calculate nutrition info before buying the food!
I have 3 criteria for my Dollar Tree meals:
-They have to feed 3-4 people
-They need to cost about $5.00 each
-They need to be reasonably healthy (80/20 approach, friends!)
What Dollar Tree meals do you want to see next? Leave me a comment and let me know because I need more ideas!

Using a few basic pantry items is not cheating. Dollar Tree carries many of the spices and people can add one here and there over time. They also have shelf-stable milk and canned fruit can also be included instead of just frozen fruit. Thank you for your creativity and well-balanced choices.

You can save the juice from the canned chicken and even the liquid from veggies like green beans and carrots to make broth or to make broths stretch. Just know the salt varies and usually there’s no need for extra salt. That pizza was a great idea!

To be fair, even meal kits expect the purchaser to have certain things on hand, I don't think those should count against the cost of the meal. A few basic pantry items are advisable for anyone preparing food. I love the fact you are helping people often forgotten...I once could only walk (we had no vehicle) to a dollar store with very little money and a young child, so thank you.

These are great meals for the money for sure. If you have a few extra bucks you could easily kick them up a notch by adding a green salad and still feed a small family very economically. Here's a tip on the biscuits: my Dollar Tree has Bisquick cheese and garlic biscuit mix that makes 6 nice size biscuits - and there's cheese in the mix. They are quite good! Brush them with a little melted butter and Old Bay seasoning when they come out of the oven and you have basically duplicated Red Lobster biscuits.

Great ideas! My fridge when out and it is always nice to have shelf stable meals. I have found that saving condiments that come from take out are usually shelf stable and can add flavor i.e. bbq sauce, soy sauce, honey, salt, pepper, etc... A jar of salsa can also be used to flavor many dishes like chili, soup, omelettes. Love your videos!

I think these are great videos. There’s so many people who are having hard times, who feel like they can’t make warm meals that taste good. And feeding your family is the most basic need so not having that is such a doorway to spiralling downwards. I like that you show people where to start and encourage people to improvise and add in what you’ve got at home. And for those of you who live where the garden season lasts more than 4 months - you can always add basics like green onion tops - everyone who’s got a spot of sunshine and a pot with soil can grow those. 💛

Right now I’m back in College and I’ll be done in a little under 4 semesters, soooo we do use our local food bank right now bc the cost of food. My food bank is super amazing always has milk and meats and eggs and cheeses but the can stuff you can just grab and this is really helpful to us to stretch out making meals from the bank so I. An get my kids a couple Christmas gifts and save up for a bit nicer dinner for Christmas 😊

Who doesnt have spices on hand? They should quit complaining about what you're doing, these are just suggestions. And you really wouldn't have to count the rice or lentils as a full dollar because you didn't use them all. So it all works out in the end. You are doing a great job!

This video series teaches you to work with what you have. I'm from a small town and if you couldn't get transportation to the grocery store or needed food before or after their business hours, the only place to shop was the convenience store gas station a mile and a half away. These videos give you inspiration to make the most of whatever you can find.

I LOVE their crusts! They are crispy and so cheap! You buy a 6 dollar frozen pizza....or you could pay a basic 3 -4 dollar recipe (actually more, because the sauce lasts a long time and the personal pans sizes have 2! You can add some jarred peppers, pepperoni...some sun dried tomatoes...country boone ham trimmings! YUM!)

Great ideas for shelf stable meals. For the first meal, I probably wouldn't have served bread with pizza. I wonder if a can of vegetable blend drained and added on the pizza would have rounded out the meal? The idea reminds me of a pizza my niece gets from a pizza delivery.

I had, for some reason, a box of hush puppy mix in my cupboard. I read the ingredients on the back the other day, saw there were no real seasonings in it, so I made it according to the directions, then thinned the batter out, added cinnamon and a bit of honey and cooked it as pancakes. Wow. They were so good. My oldest son and husband liked them better than regular pancakes, lol.

I wanted to see this kind of video and I'm happy you took on the challenge, Jamie! I think you were very creative with the shelf stable limitations. I think we all have oil and spices on hand so I don't think it's cheating to spice things up a bit! I've seen that biscuit mix at DT and wondered if it was any good. I'll have to pick it up next time! I think I mentioned in another comment they sometimes have True Lemon at DT. It's great to put in water but is also good to use as a lemon replacement In recipes. I saw another KZfaqr use it to season the DT tilapia. I saw those crescent roles a month or so ago and I picked up several bags because I figured they wouldn't stay around very long. I wasn't a big fan of them as bread but I used them to make a French toast casserole and they were wonderful in that! I think they would also be good in a savory casserole. Anyway, thanks so much for doing this. I live in a rural area and DT is one of the only close grocery options so these kinds of videos are always inspiring not only to keep costs down but also to make creative meals with no fresh ingredients. I agree with all the other commenters who would like to see a Thanksgiving meal from DT. I hope you give it a go!

I am a new subscriber to your channel and have already watched and enjoyed several of you videos. I live in Ohio and Cassano's is my favorite pizza, so when you said Cassano's that caught my attention. I watched your Thanksgiving meal video and thought that you did a great job with only shopping Dollar Tree. I would make and eat that meal. I also really like boxed stuffing mix and prefer it over home made.

With the leftover rice and grains...imho you’re ‘owed’ a few cents towards spices... and I think most people who cook have at least a couple on hand. Also, you can use the water from canned garbanzo beans as a leavening agent...

I have a recipe question with lentils. A friend of mine made lentil tortilla things and fried them up and put butter on them, she said they eat it all the time, I am wondering if anyone knows how to make them. I have looked everywhere for a recipe and canyt for the life of me find one.

Interesting! I see plenty of recipes for lentil tortillas but they don't sound like what you're talking about. Hopefully another friend can help!

I heard you say cassanos and I had to stop doing my dishes...I used to be a waitress at Cassanos in Hannibal Missouri. I know theres not many Cassanos around so I always get excited when I hear about other ones ❤

I don't get the rolls and the pizza. That's a LOT of carbs (which turn to sugar when you eat it) The pizza looks yummy, though.

Hi! As a long distance runner, I eat carbs all day long and need them to function. Not everybody can eat high-carb due to medical issues, but eating a lot of carbs isn't bad if you're healthy. =)

@@NoGettingOffThisTrain I get that, but I would have gone for a veg instead of the rolls to be balanced.

You could've added Broccoli to the pizza.

Yea there is know way my family would eat any of this. But my mom lives with us and she would eat so would I. It cool that your guy and child will eat it.

Can I suggest a pantry staples video, since people want to be petty about using things you didn't add to your total? A $10 dollar tree trip for flour, oil, spices, etc would be great!

Salt, pepper and bullion should be accepted as most Pantries have those three Ingredients as well as others.but limit to 4??????

If you had cut back one can of chicken on the pizza. Maybe bought Parmesan instead . Leftover parm could have been used for lentil soup. If dollar tree had roasted red peppers they could have subbed for mixed veggies and save a bit for the pizza and lentil soup. Carrots could have been split as well then over two meals
