I am so glad that I have shelf stable meals right now as Hurricane Beryl just passed here. Electricity out, stores closed and the stores that have just opened have little left on the shelves. Since I have pantry meals I haven't had to try to find anything in the stores or waiting in long lines. Prepared is best.

Agree it's always good to have things like this on hand you never know what will happen. I don't have to worry about Hurricane I live in KY but we do get tornadoes and in winter can get heavy snow or ice last time we had ice storm we was without power for 8 days . Plus you never know when you can get Short for cash everyone needs to do this . I hope your power comes on soon, stay safe.

That weekly food storage thing you started doing is such a great idea! One thing I like to do is if I grab a can of veggies I try to get the ones with just water and salt. That way in case of an emergency I can use that liquid in my cooking instead of needing extra water. Plus the salt in it is yet another ingredient I won’t need.

@@vannieloumarshall7232 Don’t buy foods just because someone else tells you to prep with it. I don’t like sardines or canned salmon….I don’t buy them. Wouldn’t eat them unless I was literally starving. I do like tuna in water. I make tuna salad a lot so I always keep it on hand, and I’ll always eat it. I like beans…pintos, butter beans, Lima beans, white beans…..don’t like black beans or chickpeas. Same principle as above. I prep according to my particular tastes, my modest budget, my small living space. I won’t be bugging out. I’ll be staying put. Rice and beans together are a complete protein meal. Cook rice in broth..chicken or beef. I keep the dried packets of instant broth. This is just my preferred form. Canned pasta entrees can be beefed up with frozen meatballs, or sliced pepperoni or even canned chicken. Boiled eggs are ok in the shell in the fridge for at least 2-3 days. Those with some canned fruit, cheese and crackers will hold you for a while. I like pasta and there are a couple of boxed pasta entrees that I really like. They’re super quick and easy to make.

We heavily utilize our dehydrator on excess fruit and vegetables. We create shelf stable soup mixes that we store in Mason jars. Dump in a pot of boiling water and dinner is done in short order. Make sure you have an alternative to a stove. Look at rocket stove, solar ovens or even ways to hang a pot over a fire. It's a lot of fun and may come in handy.

Shelf stable quick meal: Rice side dishes... At most dollar stores & grocery stores they have 'sides', usually in paper envelopes. Stuff like Broccoli & Rice or Chicken flavored rice. (Or even in small boxes like Rice-a-roni or Zataran's) What I like to do is prepare the side as instructed on the package. For the chicken flavored rice or Rice-a-roni, I'll add a large can of chicken, including the broth & maybe a small can of mushrooms, drained. Cook as the package instructs. When it's done, you can add some grated cheese if you want. It's yummy. For the broccoli & rice or Zataran's, you can use almost any shelf stable meat that you have available. Canned ham, Spam, canned chicken, canned tuna, whatever you like. (Dice the meat if needed) You can add a drained can of mixed vegetables, too. Top it with crushed potato chips, crushed corn chips, or crushed corn flakes & maybe some cheese. Cook on the stove top as per package instructions. (All these can be cooked in the microwave if you have electricity, otherwise cook by whatever means that you have available) If you use ham or spam, consider adding a small can of pineapple chunks, juice included. All these recipes are shelf stable, economical, quick to cook, filling & yummy. You can double or triple the recipes if needed.

I finally tried the shelf stable 1% milk, and was VERY pleased to find that, once chilled, it tastes just like fresh milk! It actually tastes like it has a higher cream content. I've bought UHT boxed milk before and had to discard it because it tasted burnt. I guess the process has been improved in years since. I am a big fan of DT food and have found some amazing items over the years. I am also a bit of a squirrel because I have a pantry full of shelf stable foods, ingredients, seasonings, etc., and I'm a single senior. Always keep extra food on hand, good people! You never know.

Brooke, you are so lucky to have a Dollar Tree that has so many delicious choices. I live in West Virginia and my local Dollar Tree doesn’t have a LOT of the shelf-stable items that I see in your videos. In fact, my local DT is a pretty lousy store all around, but I’ve traveled outside of my local area to visit Dollar Trees and they are better, but still don’t stock several of the items I see in KZfaq videos. (Must be a WV-thing 🤷‍♀️). I also find that our local Walmart out-prices the Dollar Tree on most things, but either way, I LOVE shopping for shelf-stable items. It helps HEAPS!!!!!!

I had a half pack that also needed to be used up. It was delicious and the Ramakin was full. The rest of the Chicken was divided into 2 lunch containers and each one had a scoop of instant mash Potato from another package, along with a half can each of Beets, and Cream of Corn all three meals were delicious. Shelf stable meals can be flavorful thanks to seasonings as well as inexpensive !
