The Becker House dollhouse was my Laurel School senior project. My Dad, Ray, and I built it in his basement workshop in 1973. The design was modeled from a Victorian house in New York. It sat vacant as I raised my family. It required restoration as the roof molded and my cats had explored it and chewed the corners.
The roof was re-shingled; my friend, Diane helped mix the slate paint colors. My daughter, Sara, searched the internet for authentic 1920 and 1930 wallpaper designs which I purchased by the yard. Ray had the ingenuity to plan it in four pieces. It is not only portable; but, I was able to position the sections to ease wallpapering, The wooden plank floors are removable to hide the electrical wiring that is incomplete. I researched early linoleum and the laundry floor is a copy of a 1930's Armstrong design.
My Mother, Sally, needlepointed the lovely dining room rug and embroidered an arm chair. We attended miniature shows in the 70's where we found treasured antique dollhouse furniture. Some of the dolls I made from kits and sewed the clothing. Other dolls were found on Ebay and we successfully won them at auction. I collected dollhouse furniture from several 1930's makers. You will notice the scale of the furniture and dolls varies. I observed many KZfaq videos in order to build the house. It is an engrossing hobby and has been my passion for the past fifty years.
Thanks for watching Mike's production.

I adore the special effects- the broom closet door opening magically, perfectly in sync with the music! Miss Crabtree looks so cozy, reclining in her easy-chair by the crackling fireplace. The camerawork and curated soundtrack are the cherries on top of this work of art!

We appreciated your detailed comment very much. In reality, Miss Crabtree's ankles were tied together to promote an appropriate seated position. Yes, D-dot excelled in musical score and camera angles.

Incredibly life like and such a fascinating work of art! Your workmanship and attention to detail is to be commended as is your husband's filming ability. How neat that you and your Dad made this house so many years ago!

What a perfectly delightful house! I love how it is done, I love the vintage play furniture, this is the style I love most. Thank you SO much for sharing. I’m saving the video to watch again and again for inspiration and as I keep spotting pieces I want to add to my wishlist. 💖💖💖💖

Thank you for your kind comment. Building a dollhouse is a great hobby . The best advice I heard on line in a you tube video: don't worry about mistakes; they can always be fixed.

Gorgeous house! I really enjoyed your video. I have a similar house but it's built into a cabinet. Most of my furniture is antique Strombecker. (We share a few of the same pieces)! My dolls are vintage Caco from the 1940s-1960s. A lot of my accessories are vintage pot metal Cracker Jack prizes. I framed postage stamps from the 1938 World's Fair as artwork. I made all the curtains, drapes and bedding myself. I hired out other artists to crochet miniature doilies for the backs of chairs and to scatter on dressers and such. I wish I could send you pics, I know you'd love it! Thanks for making my day with your exquisite house.

Your positive comments made all the work worthwhile. Yes, I would love to view your cabinet house; that is the display choice of the historic Dutch miniaturists. I had a lot of fun making the curtains and quilts. All my dolls have names. I plan to decorate for Christmas. Presently, I am trying to clear a bedroom for the house. Thanks & I hope you enjoy many happy hours with your dolls.

I like this so much! Your story, your research, all comes together and has a very nostalgic ambiance for me, as I am born in 1939 and have been trying to create a 'dolls' house' in a large bookcase, representing 1937, the year my parents (and my husband's parents) married. i own a few of the items like those you have featured.

Thank you for the kind comment. I googled images for 1930's kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms and looked at fashions. The doll clothing was challenging to make; usually required at least six tries. Good luck; it is a fun & challenging hobby.

Oh my gosh - it is so charming! Thank you for posting the lovely video - great job!!!! Loved all the dollies with their sweet faces - they wore all their best garments for the boarding house's unveiling. And that kitty - he or she really gets around! Especially loved the placement of on the bed - how typical of cats who only want to be cozy and comfy. The lighting really enhances the house - wonderful!! Fantastic work to create a beautiful home for many needy occupants who look quite settled and at home in this time of Depression. At least the kiddies have some beautiful toys and the company of darling kitty! So proud of you, Ruth - what a work of love and dedication to your family who all participated. Love it and you and Mike for bringing this project to fruition.

Thank you for your kind comment. It is wonderful to hear from a dollhouse enthusiast in England. I watched many Julie Warren videos to learn about dollhouse decoration. My husband, the cameraman appreciated your comments too.

One thing I have found restoring my 100yr plus dollhouse, is that the house won't simply be contemporary, but made up of furniture etc going back maybe another 100yrs. I think the old lady from Victorian times would dress old style.

I have some of the same red wooden furniture!! Do you know if it is really from the 1930’s? I think it is but after putting this all together you probably know more than me! This is so inspiring for my own doll house. Thank you!

It's from the Strombecker company. I have a lot of their pieces in their "deluxe walnut" line that has their logo printed on the bottom.
