I'm Black (not African American) and I think Dolly did this song justice. Music is self interpretation, and she did'nt sing it the negro spiritual way because she is NOT a negro or if Black descent. She sung it the way God meant for her to sing it, which is country because she is White and a country singer. Stop with all the Black/White. God put us here together to live together!

Dolly didnt even decide what she sung. She was miserable on the Porter Wagner show and here you all calling her a bitch and a racist? Dolly didn't even have a say in the songs SHE WROTE! Porter tried to take her rights to the publishing. He sued her. All of you are ignorant. In addition to this, in the smokey mountains there were no slaves. The land was too hard to work and the conditions the people lived in were similar to what slaves were given. They didn't have to live in fear but they did live in squaller and worked hard. Dolly is the nicest person in the world. She's bold and brave and is one of the few people in country music outwardly against sexism racism homophobia and transphobia.

Saying this is a black spiritual isn't a racist comment. That's a fact. It is a black spiritual. Dolly did an ok job. Any race is allowed to sing anything. But the truth is the song originated from black slaves. That's just the history behind it.

I think he is referring to the song as originally having been a predominately black spiritual. I don't know if it began as that.

Wow. Anyone can sing a spiritual song if they choose too, especially since it is a religious song. Its sung in churches all over now and can have meaning to anyone that wants to sing it. I am not an Israelite, I didn't go through what king David went through in the bible yet I sing songs written from the book of Pslams. Some of these comments make no sense.
