I started watching this with the idea that I'd love to build one myself. About 1/3 of the way through I realized how much actual work, knowledge, cost of materials, etc. it would take. Spent the last 2/3 of the video just watching and admiring your dedication. Awesome work!

Thank You!! It was a fun experiment building this dome, and getting a feel for working with the EPIC cement mix. It took about 32 hours to build. But I have a new method of building a dome that will be super fast and easy to build. I'm planning on building a small 9 foot dome using the new method in the next two or three weeks.

Thanks for putting the whole build into a single video. Here in Montana it's snowing today, and the ground is frozen. I'm cozy in my HIGH maintenance log cabin and am looking forward to a winter in a low maintenance epic/aircrete dome house. I've picked out the perfect spot on my land and go meditate there most afternoons and visualize it completed just to be sure it's exactly perfect when I start the build.

I had this idea 30 years ago to have a blowup structure and gunite it with light weight cement.Then run conduit for electrical and gunite over that. I never did it, so it's great to see it being done.My thought was to take the blowup structure out and use it over and over again. Enjoyed

I like the idea of running conduit and spaying over it. If you go to my playlist you can see when I take the air form out. I do have an air form that is reusable but it is very heavy so I don't like to use it. This air-form was cheap enough to make it one time use. A thin layer of the air-form was stuck to the cement when I took it off so I will not use it a second time it mite be weaker that's why its one time use.

Thanks, I once built Ferro cement boats... Lots heavier though. The cement with air works great... Better at a lower pressure though. Your pressure was very high and hit and bounced or splattered. A good experienced gunnite guy could help a lot. Scaffeling would have been a blessing. Many thanks I loved it

Love your energy and innovation. Good job. A couple of suggestions. Spray your final coat and do either a knock down or float finish. Will save some labor. Float finish can be achieved with a foam float. A knock down can be achieved by spraying a splatter then knocking it down with a squeegee. Also if you purchase a stucco fog coat you can spray your color inside and out with a heavy duty bug sprayer. Fog coating is cheaper then paint. Is aircrete water proof? How has the dome weathered? Concrete substrates tend to crack even when reinforced. If down the road you have issues with cracking, try elastomeric paint. It will bridge cracks up to an 1/8 inch.

I think laying concrete masonary units (blocks) aka CMUs or insulated Concrete Forms aka ICFs a good alternative for DIY because of the known engineering strength for permits, easy supply from most box stores or concrete supplies shops, buy as your budget allows, building stop and starts do not impact joints, much less equipment required for CMUs. A dome build be it aircrete or EPIC is more labor intensive at this stage of development. Thanks for your videos!
@AircreteHarry
@AircreteHarry 4 жыл бұрын
It's far more expensive to build with the two systems CMU or ICF, than the way I did in this video. With ICF you need to rent a cement pump to fill your walls. Before you can even start working on the roof. With the dome my first shotcrete spray gives me walls and a roof all in one. Only more labor intensive because I did not have my pump that works for this EPIC mix. And I did not use my Hydro mixer, I mixed with my hand mixer. When I build another EPIC cement dome I will be using my big toys and by myself I will build a dome in two days after the slab or ring beam is done. Thanks!!!

Nope. @Aircrete Harry is correct. Monolithic concrete is the fastest (less labor costs), strongest structure, with minimal material costs. Yes, there's the shotcrete pump rental. But, that's only for a day or two. No other dwelling can be completed within a few hours. ref: www.monolithicdome.com But, I'm also wondering about local permits and regs regarding the use of aircrete. Probably requires an engineer's stamp of approval.

I knew what I need to do and took it one step at a time, by doing that I made the project smaller for me. I did not get an overwhelming feeling of this is to big for me to do alone. This Dome was built using EPIC cement mix no Aircrete. Starting from the slab I used two EPIC mix designs the first 3 inches was a more insulative Pine mix the seconded 3 inches was a stronger Yellow Pine mix. To build the slab took 40 ninety-four pound bag of cement mixed with paper mulch and EPS foam. The dome was built using two EPIC mixes the first layer was a modified Oak mix for the strength and that was about 1 to 1 1/2 inches the second layer was a Balsa cement mix design, much more insulative and that was about 2 1/2 - 3 inches thick. And that took 80 ninety-four pound bag of cement to build and Basalt mesh was used as a reinforcing fabric all around the dome. The Dome Cabin build was an experiment and it was a success. Next time I build one I will make sure my other pump is working because the pump I ended up using was not good for pumping the insulative mix, that's why I had to apply the insulative layer by hand and a better scaffolding I have two ideas for that I will be working on. The next dome I am building will use Aircrete as an insulation layer. Coming soon

Good stuff harry i have an isea that might make it easier what if you had a spray foam insulation kit and just filled a piece of paiters platic with air to make your dome a thin layer let it dry and then put a 2 inch thick layer ket it dryand then sorayed your concreate mixture over that then it would be preinsulated and the foam would hold up tothe first concreate layer then your mesh and so on

One could also make a nice frame out of pallet wood (or store bought 2x4 or steel frame), staple it with Tyvek (or some other material) and spray it same-as the video and end up with a completed cabin. There's a lot of application for this mixture, especially as sturdy emergency shelters that won't burn, is insulated and will last for years. And it would probably be much more cost effective then some of the stuff I've seen out there.

Interesting build! What is the R value of your different layered walls? Separate and combined? How thick? Does it act as an insulator or more of a heat sink that gathers energy/heat during the day and releases it slowly through the evening? Windows? Sky lights? Add on bathroom and kitchen unit options?

Man! that is a lot of work. If it was me, considering the investment in labor, I would have taken a little more care to make this perfectly round at the base. And level too. A couple more hours of investment at the layout stage would have made ALL the difference in the world.

puede agregar un aditivo para acelerar el fraguado del cemento al final de la boquilla de gunittage, para que el cemento esté seco en menos de 3 segundas despues de tocar la pared! son un aditivo útil por los travajos de gunitage You can add an additive to accelerate the setting of the cement to the end of the gunittage nozzle, so that the cement is dry in less than 3 seconds after touching the wall! they are a useful additive for gunitage works

If he wanted to heat the place in the winter, he should make a Johnson-Su bioreactor for compost heat, and run a slinkey of hydronic tubing through it and then put a radiant heat system in the floor to circulate water through the reactor and the floor. Cooling can be achieved with a geothermal middle east cooling tower by submerging a slinkey of tubing in 10' or more of water and running a solar powered pump/heat exchanger fan combination on the wall.
