If the husband had been alive to legally defend himself, no doubt there would have been more coercive control during the legal proceedings. The abusive behavior doesn't stop on reporting, but can escalate and take other forms: stalking, lying, and stealing, etc. This type of person will continue to confabulate, intimidate, and deflect blame ruthlessly and relentlessly in court. Thankfully, her sons came forward to report incidents that supported her testimony. Many mean people manipulate and use children as pawns while smearing the whistleblower, alienating children from the other parent. People of viscous intent can and do create documents, have the judge sign, pressure the plaintiff into conceding while the plaintiff's attorney and judge don't fully know that underhanded tactics are subtly being deployed by the abuser defendent. The legal system in the U.S. must wake up to see the projections from the abuser towards the target(s) and believe the person reporting the abuse(s). The system dismisses/doesn't acknowledge and this must change to prevent re-victimization and protect innocent individuals, before murder occurs. It's imperative that everyone is aware of the insidious nature of cruel people, their guises, and the damage they mete out to punish - all of which it seems to affect lives and livelihood of mostly woman and children. INSIST on REAL JUSTICE. ⚖️

No question that long term CC, belittling, scapegoating, controlling, neglect, manipulation and infidelity causes personality change resulting from years of depression and stress. I accept coercive control is a real thing that leads to a breaking point. If you push someone to their limits for years you have to accept some responsibility for the consequences. It just doesn’t sit well with me that this wouldn’t work the other way round. If a man bludgeoned his wife to death with a hammer when she tried to leave him and claimed it was because she belittled his masculinity and self-esteem throughout their marriage, it just wouldn’t wash. an issue with jurors is that they are the public, majority of the public don't understand how complicated Abuse is to legally identify and they only know the extremes of what to look for but coercive control is a subtle type of abuse used to completely ruin a persons self-esteem and is paired with other types of abuse for Sally Challen it was sexual, physical and financial. She was married to her husband for 30 years, that is 30+ years of abuse it's going to impact her mental health exponentially. People in the public can easily say 'why did she get out if she knew it was that bad', and there is no simple answer to that, could range from her being in love to her not having the money to leave, ect.

Coercive control is a very real thing, HOWEVER..... they had split as a couple and he had found someone else and moved on. During her police interview she said, and I quote verbatim: “If I couldn’t have him no one could.” Now if a man had taken a hammer to his ex wife’s skull and repeatedly brought it down until he’d murdered her and said those words during an interview he’d be in prison for life with a minimum tariff of 20 years or so as someone with jealousy issues of that nature is quite rightly a danger to any future partner. I know victims of serious domestic abuse, I know victims of insidious coercive control & while it can take a very long time for them to leave their abuser and years of therapy to rebuild their lives, their trust and their fragile sense of self worth they would never, EVER have committed a brutal act like this just because their abuser no longer wanted to be in a relationship with them. This is a serious travesty of the protections that woman are afforded when in the clutches of an abuser. I’m frankly disgusted that she is being flouted on TV as an abuse ‘survivor’. I watched this documentary yesterday. It seems like she and her husband were broken. He did not deserve to die. I struggle to identify with behaviour that seems voluntary - putting up with mistreatment for any period of time isn't in my way of being. As a result I struggle with my empathy for these people.
