Fun fact about the Temporary Lockdown "amongus" card: It shows Teferi, Jaya, Jodah, Stenn and Karn in the art. Of all those characters the only one who is a card that would be affected by Temporary Lockdown itself is Stenn, who turns out in this set's lore to be the Phyrexian sleeper.

That's also easily remembered by the fact that it's the second card type that allows a card to have a creature type, as only card types, not super types, can have subtypes.

It has to be a card type. The entire reason it was created was so that you could apply creature subtypes to noncreatures.

Brobdingnagian is from Gulliver's Travels. He goes to Lilliput where everyone is tiny and he's giant, and he goes to Brobdingnag which is the opposite.

I feel like nicknames has become closer to alternate flavor text. Not complaining, but maybe you could do two where nicknames has a smaller word count cap or something

I wanted to comment something similar. Listened to the War of the Spark one randomly today and it was a contrast to the lengthy names here. Graham had to skip multiple names due to length. Very creative tho and good on people for the effort, just didn’t feel the quippy fun names in this one much

49:00 My source, Graham, is The Eternal Ice by Jeff Grubb. It's a pretty good book, as far as MtG fiction goes. Starring Jodah and Jaya, with Lim-Dûl as the villain. Part two of a trilogy, between The Gathering Dark and The shattered Alliance. Also, friggin' _finally_ one of my "Fun Facts" got top votes and got into one of the nicknames episodes. C'mon, people, I've got excessive amounts of MtG minutiae stuck in my brain that need to be shared with everyone in order to justify, to me, my continued memorization of them!

Hold on, serra peragon works on arena. That means arena doesn't have a rules engine. They are just ACTUALLY programming in each individual card. That's actually a huge revelation on why they take so long to program cards.

Arena's cards are implemented by natural-language parsing the rules text of a card, but that parsing has to connect to something - so the parts like "what does 'Deathtouch' actually mean" are each programmed. There are also manual corner cases, for things like "setting a stop for Sheoldred". For any card that uses all existing effects, there's no programming involved.

I actually submitted one for each part of the Defiler cycle, starting with the sad blue player, the thoughtful black player, the excited white weenie player, and the sicko aggro red player. The green one at the end was then a confused green stompy player, being surprised that there was such a thing as a non-permanent spell. Only the blue and green ones are really particularly funny on their own so I didn't expect any of them to win, so I'm pleasantly surprised the blue one did :D

One piece of feedback regarding the new format for nicknames and voting. My wrist dislocated just before voting opened and wouldn't stay in place, preventing me from using my computer. When accessing the voting page on my android phone, I could only see a few of the suggested names chosen at random. If I wanted to vote for a good one a friend mentioned, I had to reload repeatedly and hope they showed up.

1:15:04 Tribal is a card type, but I will die on the hill that it should be a supertype. Until and unless WotC defines what a Tribal card with no other types is/would be, I say it should rightfully be a supertype

Super types cannot have a subtype, though. The entire point of the Tribal card type was to allow non-creature cards to have a creature subtype.

I'm both proud and embarrassed that the first nickname I've successfully gotten into one of these, couldn't be said because it was too long and obnoxious. (It was the entire lyrics to Sabotage! at 4:30) Edit: I think I also came up with The Raven at 1:20:30 but I don't remember if someone else had already beaten me to it. It's not very creative, I know. I had also submitted, "Man literally too spooky to die" but it only got seven votes.

They seem to have adopted, some time in the deep past, “El Spidro Gigante” as the nickname for Giant Spider. Through the history of the nicknames episodes, people have submitted increasingly elaborate and clever variations on the theme. It’s one of my favorite jokes.

It's not Elspeth. It's Xantcha. In the novel "Planeswalker" which focuses main on Xantcha, it is explained that Gix did nasty things to Xantcha that modern day MTG lore would not be okay with being a part of a character's canonical backstory, not even for a phyrexian.

Okay, hear me out: I love LRR's work on Unfinity, but what if Unfinity had been made with the spirit of some of the relevant humor in these submissions? These submissions feel like the humor that we love to hear around the gaming table. Unfinity felt like the deepcut humor from around the devs' table. I don't mean to be negative. I just wonder what an unset would be like if it were constructed around the MTG community zeitgeist. 🤔
