Well actually no, no offense but the piece is harmonically very easy, Metheny improvises over thousand of key changes, over this piece there are no many possibilities to improvise. Metheny can easily improvise on a piece more difficult than this and he does.

I meant exactly that: the song is too simple, so it’s a good pop piece with Sting’s voice, but becomes dull being just instrumental, it’s repetitive and quite poor harmonically, so Pat’s playing is just trying to make the best of it, but still quite dull, in my opinion. So yeah, technically it was intended to be more like a musical phrase than a complete song with defined structure.
