What you need now is a Liberty L12 aero engine. These date from the Great War, and were designed and built in the US. Being only 27 litres, and fairly light and compact, I think that it would fit the bill. A land speed record car, called the White Triplex, was constructed around 100 years ago, with THREE of these engines!

The Liberty V12s are the playthings of people who heat their Boathouses with soiled ten pound notes to keep their Mahogany Dual Cockpit Runabouts warm in the winter. Perhaps he could sell his house, all his tools, cars, and motorbikes, plus rent out some of his clothes on days where he isn't wearing them to get his hands on a good Liberty and some spares. The good ones of those things are eye-wateringly, BRUTALLY expensive these days, which is a shame, because it would be A FANTASTIC choice

Congratulations Dom. Just watched the video - looks like a very good start - don't be scared to throw some of it away and on a technical note, the back axle ratio is going to be very important, so check what it is and start getting a crown, wheel and pinion made as it takes a very long time. Look forward to welcoming you to the Shed soon. And thanks for the mention. Ivan

Dom, everyone secretly wants an Edwardian racer. Most people are just dreamers and as my dad said to me when I was in my teens ..... never ever be a wasser. When I asked what a wasser was he said, one of those people that was always going to do such and such, but they never do. So I have followed his thinking ever since. Never regretted it for a minute. Special is boring, ‘Ranalah Rochet’ (said like rocket) sign-written on the side is perfect, it’s quirky enough that people will ask about it, and it’s easily explainable, it’s in the same grain as triton, norvin, bitsa. Rolls off the tongue of the goodwood announcers, It’s a good play on words, I’d go with that.

Best of luck Dom, finding an inline, pre 1918 engine will be pretty tough, as most aero engines were either radial or rotary units and it wasn't until the BE2 fighter bomber that inlines became popular and we're made by Rolls Royce (very expensive) and the German equivalent, Daimler Benz (as rare as hens teeth due to the scrapping of WW1 German aircraft. Maybe, if you can find one, a very early Gypsy Major 6 cylinder inline engine may be your best bet. It was used extensively by the De Havilland Aircraft Co almost from their inception and delivered good reliable horsepower in all their variants. Only problem was that they were mounted inverted which would require some massive conversion work to turn it cylinders up! The torque from most aero engines means that you could get away with a two or three speed gearbox, possibly one out of a boat and it would come with a reverse gear for when you have to get out of the Armco after the rest brakes fail! 🤣🤣🤣
@mumbles2000
@mumbles2000 2 күн бұрын
while much later and mid engined, the Stanton Crop Duster Special used an inverted 4 cylinder De Havilland engine from a Tiger Moth, some of the engine solutions may apply, this car is still running and was at Goodwood in 2009, but I think a six cylinder would work well visually with the Rochet's long wheelbase and to my ear Ranalah Rochet sounds more period than Ranalah Rocket kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZuWhLVj1taWiKM.html

When I started at LMB in Belgium, they had just finished a home grown Minerva. The original sleeve valve smoke generator engine was shot, so they built a Liberty V12 from parts left over from the first war. I wasn't cheap, but it was absolutely brutal. They made quite a few engines so there must be another being used as a door stop somewhere.

I know the journey is much of the process but the quickest and possibly easiest route to an Edwardian racer might be to restore the RS and sell it to raise the cash for an outright purchase of one. Or maybe even a swap. Less vandalism of old and rare machinery as well. 8 -) BTW, RS was the origin of the Zenith carburettor company.

Every time you mentioned this dream, Dom, I thought you were mad, especially when it meant so many sacrifices to fund it. I really couldn't see the point, nor the attraction, when there were so many more practical projects on which you could be spending your skills, time, and money. But this video makes sense of that: the history, the concept, the plan, the passion. I still think you're a bit mad, but I am suitably fascinated, and I shall be quite unperturbed if the early acquisition of an engine sees the Porsche project pushed back!

I totally understand the desire to make your Special SPECIAL, with an unusual engine that would set it apart from the other Edwardian Monsters, however... There's something to be said about taking the more well trodden path on your first trip over the falls if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor. An OX-5, a Hall-Scott or similar, if it's within your budget, will get the wheels turning, both literally and figuratively, far sooner than something exotic that requires reverse engineering to repair or replace broken or missing parts. There's also the institutional knowledge of your new H-S or Curtis mates that have made a lot of the expensive mistakes already and will be happy to help. You can enjoy your Edwardian HotRod years sooner and be on the lookout for that 30litre TwinCam Etcetterini Dirigible engine while you're Hooning around at Members Meetings and plowing through the Hedges at Prescott. Lots of the Ferocious Fire Breathing Beasts of yore had a progression of engines ranging from the merely absurd to the unfeasably ludicrous as the owners got used to increasing levels of terror and panic, so you'd be living the adventure in an historically accurate way. Whatever you do, it's going to be BADASS and I don't doubt that you'll see it through

I agree fully with your purchase decision Dom; firstly you got the intro and the thumbs up from fellow knowledgeable enthusiasts on Edwardians, and secondly you fell in love with the looks of the (potential) beast and this is SO important as a future driving force. So in a nutshell, you did correctly in securing this rolling chassis and don't eat yourself up about the decision, you will get used to it very, very shortly and start smiling to yourself about it! Sometimes you just HAVE to snap these things up whilst they are on offer. Now you only need a straight eight or a V12 to go in it, but will one fit length wise?? !!

Follow your heart in this, and everything you pursue. It will happen. If anyone can do it you certainly can.

Great to hear you are beginning your Edwardian racer project. I was at Shelsley Walsh (the world's oldest motorsport track) today (VSCC meeting), watching some of these vintage beasts attack the hill.

I think that you ought to focus on the engine which it already has. It looks as though it is probably a very interesting engine in its own right. Wouldn't it be a shame to separate the original engine from the chassis? Perhaps there are good reasons for breaking this up but I would have thought that originality counts for a lot. You use the term Edwardian loosely, most Edwardian, i.e. pre-1910, aero engines would be very rare, limited hours museum specimens. Most of the aero-engined cars which inspire you would have benefitted from the vast amount of war-surplus stock sold off at scrap metal rates after 1919 (and therefore are strictly Georgian). That said, good luck with this one, I'm sure it will be an interesting project to follow.
