--------
Dominique Wilkins spoke about his experience as a young adult growing up in the South, particularly his controversial decision to attend university in Georgia rather than in his home state of North Carolina. At the time, in the late 70s, this was considered as unusual and even against the norm. Wilkins shared that after this decision, he faced an unprecedented backlash that involved hostility and racism, including racial slurs written on his car, threatening messages, and a cross burning in his yard. He also highlighted that segregation was a stark reality in his high school years, with separate proms for black and white students.

Once I heard Dominique say that his high school had segregated proms, I knew then that Washington NC had to have a large black population. I graduated high school here in N. Georgia a year (1980) after Dominique and my high school had one prom every since the schools integrated around 1970. The reason why there was no segregated prom here was because white people had the black people outnumbered 90% to 10%. When they outnumber you like that they feel in total control. But say if the black population would have been 20-25 percent then there probably would have been a segregated prom.
@tonteaux1
@tonteaux1 Жыл бұрын
In the 70's in my part of Louisiana (southwest) we actually had 3 proms. Black prom, white prom, school sponsored prom. The black/white proms had unofficial leaders for fundraising to get the entertainment, venue, etc..School prom was held at school so it was poorly attended mainly because of no alcohol was allowed. I believe the current day prom at my school is a farce, kids show up, take pictures, and within an hour or so the place is empty. A few wait for the ceremonies...😆😆

It's a real shame he was forced to leave his home due to racism. As a White kid growing up in the suburbs of L.A., Dominique was my hero. I had this thing where I'd watch his games throughout the week and predict his plays that would end up on Sports Center's Top 10 plays on ESPN that Saturday. There was rarely a Saturday he WASN'T on the Top 10. When my neighbor friend and I would shoot hoops over his garage, I 'was' always 'Nique. Sure racism is still around, only now it's manufactured and given the nice sounding title of 'Progressivism', requiring an oppressed, and an oppressor, and for all of us to be at each other's throats.
