Dear Dom Sigalas, I would like to leave a KZfaq comment to praise your work as a sound designer. I have learned more from you in a few days than in over 20 years of using recording software, starting with Cool Edit and then Cubase. I sincerely want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and let you know that I will continue to follow you and eagerly learn from you as long as I live! Since the first time I stumbled upon your videos, I have felt that you are a true expert in the field of sound design. Your clear and detailed explanations have allowed me to deepen my knowledge and improve my skills in recording and music production. Not only do you have vast technical knowledge, but you also possess a great ability to convey information in a clear and understandable manner, even for someone like me who doesn't have a professional background in the field. Thanks to your tutorials, I have learned numerous tricks and techniques that have helped me achieve incredible results in my recordings. I have learned how to make the most of the features of my recording software and how to use effects to manipulate and enhance sound. Additionally, you have generously shared your "secret sauces" to add a unique touch to tracks and create that beloved 80s atmosphere. I also want to thank you for your commitment to sharing your knowledge and your dedication to responding to your fans' questions. I truly appreciate that you are willing to give your time and expertise to help others improve their skills in sound design. I will continue to be a loyal viewer of your videos and learn from you. You are a true source of inspiration, and I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us in the future. Thank you again for everything you do and for helping me pursue my dream of becoming a better music producer. Warm thanks and a big hug, Thomas Grotto,

Nice! As you showed, level-matching is a great way to make sure one's on the right track when doing serial compression and saturation. :D It's easy to be tricked into thinking something is better just because it's louder.

WOW! A true masterclass! I'm a complete noob, fearful of how to process vocals for a professional sound. Seriously, I teared up at the end from sheer delight of haven been given access to the knowledge and skill of an audio mixing/mastering master. Fascinating how each processing step adds its own nuance(s). Thanks so much, Dom. And, thank you as well to all the commenters sharing their take and experience. I suggest watching this multiple times to ensure it soaks in. Also, compare and contrast with other techniques, and BE SURE to watch Dom's "Gain State Like a Pro" video.

Super helpful, Dom. The stages give me so much more structure. Thank you! The only thing I’m doing different ist to set the parallel compression as a pre and set the routing of both the vocals and the parallel compression FX channel to a new bus. On this bus I’m automating the volume so the compression is stable. Also I’m sending reverbs from this bus. Beside that this is my new standard chain for vocals!

🔥Dom's on fire!! I've tried using the WAVES C6 X 2 on the lead vocal. The first C6 removes the frequencies below 100 Hz and above 4000hz, then compresses the low and high mids at the 'boxy' and 'nasal' areas. Then gently into a compressor (WAVES DBX60 is good), then into another C6 to get some air in 10000hz+ and remove harshness around 2500hz. Then saturation into the WAVES MV2 Limiter. I'll be trying the RVox in the chain next time and the sends Dom's using in this top video😁🖖

+++ TIP: you can do all this with very VERY close results with the use of Cubase´s onstock plugins: (no kiddin´, please try) +++ ♥ RVox = Standard Compressor (Ratio 4:1, Attack 0.1, Release 1000, Analysis 0) LA2A = Tube Compressor (Attack 6-13 ms, Release 90-99 e.g.) Abbey Saturator = Magneto II or Channel Strip Tape/Tube Saturation! L2 = Cubase Maximizer with "Modern Mode" !! MV2 = Cubase Squasher! ADT1 Reel Doubler = Cubase Cloner! H-Delay = Multi Tab Delay or Stereo Delays e.g. Multiband Compressor = Cubase MBC... 👍 I have compared Waves intensive with Cubase plugins, check with HP one track: pan left Waves, pan right Cubase onstock. try with adjusting to get panning in the middle. works.

i have used most of these on my vocals but the combination is great. I usually start with the CLA2A the tip with multiband taming before is great. the abbey Road saturator is also one of my favourites never disappoints on vox. the parallel cla76 and kramer on the 2 sends was new really nice for chorus vs verse. i usually only throw extra takes on it - you do it all from the one track! tx Dom for sharing

Wow, doing stuff like compression and saturation in tiny steps, it really makes a huge difference! I find your videos very helpful, thank you 😊 👍🏻 Btw, it would be interesting to see how you treat layers of transient rich, percussive elements. Say, if you have alot of tight midi drums and percussion with overlaying transients that build up.

Hi Dom - I have a video request. I love 'acoustic' music - mostly acoustic things like folk, bluegrass, celtic, etc. Would you please do a video on how to record and produce this type of music, especially in Cubase - how to track unruly acoustic instruments, and how to apply some of Cubase's features when you aren't doing everything with MIDI, all neatly mapped to a grid, etc. If you record someone doing this, do you just let them wing it, and then adapt to that, or do you set up a click or percussion guide track... I think it's a rich area for a video, mainly because I struggle with all of the above :) Hope you think so too!

@@DomSigalas They say luck is when opportunity meets preparedness... Sadly, I am not prepared for this :(. I don't have anything useful tracked myself, but I will begin looking around. There should be some public domain stuff available in these areas, I just don't know where to lay my hands on one right now. With this question as motivation, I might be able to put something together sometime soon.

I find if you don't high pass the vocals past 60hz, you don't get thin vocals in the first place. If they are too boomy or muddy, add a low shelf at around 800hz and reduce by 1-2db will do the trick without getting a thin vocals. That way you don't have to chase your tail as much.
