This was interesting and probably typical of western evangelical thinking but he completely missed it on this one. The rich man in the story is Israel. Judah was blessed above his brothers by Jacob and the scepter was promised never to depart from his descendants. Thus the faring sumptuously and being dressed in purple and fine linen. Judah (representing Israel and thus the rich man) had five brothers, Leah had six sons. Israel was to be a blessing to all nations which they failed to be. They excluded the Gentiles (dogs) and the Gentiles only got crumbs of God's kingdom from the table of the Jews. Lazarus in the story is the Gentiles, getting crumbs of the kingdom. Lazarus is in the Greek language a partial derivative of the name Eliezer, who was Abram's beloved servant (close to his side or in his bosom). Eliezer would have inherited Abram's wealth had not God given him Isaac as an heir. Eliezer was a Gentile from Damascus. Abraham in the story was himself. This was not a story about the afterlife and heaven of hell. It was an indictment of the religious Israel that failed to be a blessing to the nations and kept the things of God to themselves. Israel was cut off and have been in torment while the Gentiles were included and the good news of the kingdom has been going forth as a blessing to all nations through them. One day, Israel will be grafted back in to their native tree and all Israel will be saved. That is what this parable prophesied and it is still being fulfilled.

Some very good points addressed, but a huge opportunity to address the real truths held in this parable was lost. Parable was originally directed at the Pharasees who trusted in their wealth and religious status and kindred connection to Abraham as proof of being right with God. They denied who Jesus is because of deep seated unbelief. This parable is not about death, state of the dead or what happens after. It is all about the dangers of unbelief that will fix our eternal destiny. Lazarus indeed was raised from the dead and the Pharasees still remained in unbelief..they plotted to murder Lazarus to get rid of the living evidence that Jesus is the Messiah...they plotted the death of Jesus demonstrating that their refusal to believe and submit had already fixed their eternal destiny. I pray we will read this parable and heed the warning...

There are many clues in the parable* of Lazarus and the Rich Man that, instead of contrasting the saved vs. unsaved, it's contrasting the treatment of Jews vs. Gentiles in the gospel age^, when the tables would be turned**: 1. Rich Man -- is never directly accused of a sin (only of being wealthy)^^ 2. Lazarus -- is never described as righteous (only of being a beggar)* * * 3. Purple -- indicates royalty (chosenness) 4. Fine linen -- was for Jewish priests (Exodus 28:39) 5. Abraham -- why is he in this parable at all? Because it specifically concerns Judaism. 6. Father Abraham -- described as "Father" 7. Flame -- the flame is singular -- not plural -- strongly suggesting this isn't about literal hell 8. Five Brothers -- The 5 FULL-blooded brothers of Judah were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar & Zebulun (Gen. 35:23) 9. Moses & Prophets -- The Jewish people had Moses and the prophets 10. Not Convinced by One Rising from the Dead -- a prophecy of Christ's pending resurrection, which his Jewish audience would become very familiar with but would not heed (for the most part) * It follows the parables of the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, the Prodigal Son and the Unjust Steward, strongly suggesting that it, too, is a parable. So does one drop of water being able to help in this situation. ^ In the gospel age, Israel is partially hardened by God (Rom. 11:25), while Gentiles are included in the church. ** None of this excuses centuries of anti-semitism, but this parable appears to predict it. ^^ The Rich Man's material wealth represents his belonging to the chosen people, and having the written revelation of God (Hebrew scriptures). * * * Lazarus represents Gentiles who were beggars in the sense that they were lacking truth about God, due to God's chosen people not having shared it with them. (Consider the unjust steward in the parable immediately preceding this one, and Jesus overturning tables at the temple.) It's also been argued that since "Lazarus" means "helped by God," this implies his righteousness, but that conclusion doesn't follow. For more, see Bryan T. Huie's _Lazarus and the Rich Man_ article

Don Carson, parables represent something -- Not to be taken literal as told or written. My Short Version of this important parable This parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus signifies the bringing into God's kingdom the lowly gentile beggars (Lazarus or Eliezer) and the excluding or throwing out the pious rich Jews(Judah as a whole - not as a man) and their "religious" high priests (purple robes) - Hence, Jesus said the kingdom will be taken from you (Jews) and turned over to another (Gentiles). So, yes they will be and are in agony. They were on fire as it were. Please send Lazarus to warn my five brother's... Judah ("Rich Man") had a mother, Leah and she had 6 kids...Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, and finally Judah "The Rich Man" which was the 6th son of the patriarch Jacob and Leah. True, there was 12 tribes of Israel (Jacob) however, not by the same mother. The high minded Jews (Judah) knew what Jesus meant by this parable and so they hated Jesus and began to conspire to have him killed..... Now that's a parable!!

There are several reasons why this is not a parable. 1. People are not named but Moses and Abraham are named. 2. Angel's are not mentioned in parables but angels carried Lazarus to Abraham's bosom. 3.Parables have earthly settings, bu Hades is not an earthly setting. 4. If this is a parable, why did Jesus tell a parable which denies soul sleep? God bless you. Roy Page.

Your 4 points are *subjective* - not Biblical - arguments. 1. Is there a Biblical prohibition against using proper names in parables? Not one text. The reason He used them is evident in the interpretation of the parable. 2. Is there a Biblical prohibition against using angels in parables? Not one text. Besides, the saints don’t get carried anywhere when they die any more than sinners can carry on a conversation while completely engulfed in flames when they die. 3. Deuteronomy 32:22 and Proverbs 11:31 prove the wicked suffer hellfire punishment *on this Earth.* 4. Because parables often deny reality. In them, things happen that cannot and do not happen in real experience. You asking why Jesus would give a parable that denies soul sleep is like someone asking, “Why did Jotham tell a parable that denies trees can’t talk?”

@@lacoguk Look, the reason why no Bible scholar worth his salt considers your "proper names" argument to hold much water is because *there's no Biblical precedent or prohibition that disallows the use of proper names in a parable.* If the absence of proper names in other parables makes the use of them in Luke 16 "proof" that the passage is literal --- then the absence of walking, talking trees in all other parables makes Jotham's story literal. Look out, that thorn bush you weed whacked last week is sneaking up behind you.

HELL & PUNISHMENT IN THE GRAVE IN THE BIBLE. THOUGH THEY CLIMB UP TO THE HEAVENS, FROM THERE ,I WILL BRING THEM DOWN EVEN IF HELL MEANS THE " GRAVE ' AND SCRIPTURE SHOULD DESCRIBE HELL AS IT WOULD THE GRAVE. If true, it is here that the rich man is in torment. The final judgement has not yet come. It doesn't bode well for the rich man, still, to be subject to eternal destruction after that judgement. Jesus gets to the main point at the end of this parable. He says that they did not believe moses or the prophets that God had sent so why would they believe one who comes back from the dead. Remember after Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead that the pharisees wanted to kill Lazarus again because they feared the miracle and feared losing their power is one point the other point is that even when God raises Jesus from the dead these same pharisees still wont believe that Jesus came from God even though moses spoke of Him as well as the prophets.

The rich man is in "hades" (and not in hell) - the equivalent of the Hebrew sheol, the place where all the dead go (Luke 16:23). Most modern translations (ESV, NIV etc) retain "hades", while the KJV translates hades as hell. The word "gehenna" is translated hell. In other words, this parable, while it does carries a heavy warning, is not about what happens to the rich man in "hell".
@bricelory9534
@bricelory9534 2 жыл бұрын
the rich man himself calls it a place of torment, and the implication is clear that he cannot go to the "bosom of Abraham" - so whether there's a necessary distinguishment between hell and hades seems fairly inconsequential and frankly speculative. The Bible doesn't seem terribly interested in laying out the exact topography or nomenclature of these sorts of "places". A lot of this assumes that Jesus was using technical terms in describing hades, gehenna, and so on, but I see no real reason to assume that's the case, as each is illustrative more of the point being made more than intended to be a precise description of such a "place."

Jesus didn't call this a parable so why does D A Carson? The first thing we should learn is that this isn't a parable. These are real specific people with names. In the genuine parables of Jesus, no one has a name. In this passage 2 of the 3 characters have names. Clearly this was NOT the Lazarus who Jesus would later raise from the dead. Paul said that Israel in part was cut out of the tree so that you may be grafted in. He also went on to say that in the end All Israel will be saved so Paul warns against bosting against Israel. Jesus was not against Israel He was only against those who add to the laws of God in order to lord it over Gods people. Remember when Jesus said he came only for the lost sheep of Israel? He had a reason for saying this. When Soloman died God ripped the kingdom of Israel in two. He did this because of the sins Solomon committed in the latter years of his life due to all him foreign wives. The 10 tribes sinned and after many years of no repentance God divorced the 10 tribes and scattered them through out the whole world. They assimilated into all the kingdoms for which God had scattered them to the point where today they dont even know their ancestors were even part of Israel. They are called the lost sheep of the house of Israel. They are known today as gentiles. You were grafted in in hopes of saving the lost sheep. There is a difference between the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

I don’t think that’s correct. The Bible is clear that we can only get to heaven if we have faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection and the justification he achieves for us. Although there is no sin explicitly mentioned we get a small insight into the identity of each person. Lazarus is the only character in any parable of Jesus who is named. His name means “God saves”. On the other hand, the whole identity of the rich man is summed up in the way he is referred to. He is rich. That is what his identity is wrapped up in. Lazarus is not in heaven because he is poor, he is in heaven because he trusts in God, as is revealed in his name. The rich man is in hell because he is deluded into thinking his wealth and status will carry over into eternal life. He does not trust in God, he trusts only in himself. He still thinks of himself as superior, asking Abraham to send Lazarus as if Lazarus is still subordinate to him and fit to run errands for him and having the audacity to correct Abraham in v.30.

That's because, as Jesus has told the goats, you didn't give me drink when I'm thirsty, you didn't give me food when I'm hungry, you didn't let me in your home when I was an immigrant, you didn't even visit me when I was sick or imprisoned. This rich man have all the means to do those things, but he didn't because his wealth surrounded him from seeing those oppressed around him. In order to be saved, faith and works are needed, not by faith alone.

@@aliszhinchaenz Ephesians 2:8-9 "8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast." It is faith that LEADS to works. It is not works that save, it is faith alone. But saving faith produces a change in the lives of those who possess it and necessitates godly works in their lives. Faith which is not accompanied by action is dead (James 2:17) but it is not the works that saves, it is the faith which produces works.

@@aliszhinchaenz , you have answered rightly.. the rich man did not love neighbor: when I was thirsty you gave me no drink.. when I was hungry you gave me no meat.. when I was naked you clothed me not.. when I was sick or in jail you visited me not.. when I was a stranger you took me not in. Matthew 25:31-46 The goats are going into everlasting punishment in the lake of fire; because they didn't love their neighbor If you love your neighbor, you love God If you don't love your neighbor, whom you see, how can you love God, whom you don't see? Faith without works is dead Many rich ministers don't love their neighbor, and Jesus is going to say to them: depart from me

He's got it all wrong. This parable was directed at the Pharisees, it's not about heaven and hell but the Pharisees rejecting Christ's message. Amazing how preachers turn this into proof of eternal punishment. No merciful, just God would sentence anyone to eternal torture.

This is a story, a parable. Jesus has points to this story. In real life lazarus was a close friend and also one who died that Jesus brought back. You need to remember that the pharisees wanted to kill lazarus because of the miracle. In this story that he told yes for the sake of the pharisees hearing he used a name Lazarus. The whole moral of this story is that if they dont listen to moses and the prophets they wont listen even though one is raised from the dead. Its not a story that all rich will go to hell and its not a story about all poor will go to heaven. This story is directed to the pharisees who add to YHWHs laws and who wants to kill Lazarus. What it is not is proof if what happens after we die.

People forget that Jesus said to his disciples that it was given to them to understand but not to the world. Its better to pray about it because the one who seeks truth the Spirit of the Living God will give truth. Just because someone has been to seminary school does not mean crap. Better to be schooled by YHWHs Spirit.
