I don't like translations too. But even in Mozart's times his operas were translated in many languages. The audience was invited to understand the sung word. By going into the living rooms of people this film could open the minds for more and more people that don't belong to this insweared group of opera lovers that only accept the top standard of the world.

Man, I was just about to post something quite similar when I read your witty sensible comment. There was a clear purpose to why translate Mozart's operas, even in his times and, despite of the stylistic choices or the conception Holten could have had, I think the film might serve for similar purposes and I totally celebrate that!

Saw this last night in Covent Garden - superb film with emphasis on the word 'film' - if you want a straight rendition of Don Giovanni look elsewhere but if you like the Baz Luhrmann approach to interpreting classics then you will love this. Visually and aurally a great piece of work.

Bravo! The more interpretations of Don Giovanni, the richer the human experience of Mozart's masterpiece and the world's legacy of music. What next? Don Giovanni Gangnam-style sung in Korean? Why not?

Okay, so it's obviously very different from the traditional opera, but I really wish I could see this thing. It's not like it's the only way the opera will ever be done thereafter. Just from this and the video of Leporello's aria, it looks like it's worth seeing. It's just too bad this isn't available in America.

I don't care so much about the nudity and sexual depictions... but.. in english? are you kidding me? Original libretto is in italian and the music fits perfectly, flawlessly, to this language. Mozart put every single note "flowing" around the words, with perfect arrangement and perfect timing, perfect emphasis and continuity. Every single emotion is transmitted at its maximum extent. By changing it to english, there is a huge risk to convert the greatest opera ever written in a mediocre oeuvre, you alter the delicacy of the balance in this impressive opera. Nonetheless, I must give the producers a credit - by trying to offer the audience something new, and in some way with enough impact for young generations (which may be attracted by this filmic staging with this powerful, timeless story).

There are recordings of Italian? operas in almost every language & some of the German ones happen to be the best. Why? Because the singers are singing in their native tongue & having a grand time. Obvious, no? The German audiences are happy, as are the English with this. What's your problem?

I liked it very much. First they didnt change the story and they shown that Don Giovanni can live in modern times and the story of the opera is timeless. The music is from original opera. Finally some people dont know the differnece between erotism and porno!

I've been looking over the reviews. It may or may not be good art, but the most censorious critics don't find it explicit. So unless this trailer is porn, neither is the film.

Nothing against it being explicit myself, as long as it's not completely gratuitous (I haven't seen it, it may be just that) - I'm more of an adversary of the translation of operas! Pity it wasn't filmed in the original language, I can't stand translations - grand opera in English never, ever sounds right.

I like opera and I like porn, but not mixed together. It is sad that the producers of this opera film feel it necessary to use explicit sex to promote this opera. They apparently feel that opera alone is not enough.

Why on Earth do the English continue to translate operas into English? Subtitles are fine by me. I'm no longer surprised by gimmicky, desperately modern, Euro-trash productions, but at this point in things, operas written in German are performed in German and operas written in Italian are performed in Italian. And please spare me the line that this sort of thing will introduce new audiences to opera. You can't increase a person's attention span for the arts by doing whatever it takes to merely hold their attention. The "Breaking Bad/Game of Thrones" approach to opera is worse than immature - it's obvious. Assuming you DO catch the interest of someone who's never enjoyed opera, what do you steer them towards next? They'll expect more of the same. Unless you're planning a full-frontal production of "Rosenkavalier," your new convert to opera will be greatly disappointed to discover how most opera is not in English and most singers perform wearing pants and underwear. Sad - but true! Popularizing great music by making it "accessible" - I love that earnest cliche. The "Three Tenors" created an audience for - opera? No, for Three Tenors-style music: lovely, peppy stuff which is over in a few minutes. It wasn't a deliberate strategy, but The Three Tenors made the world a safe place for André Rieu. And in this trailer, there's Placido Domingo at 1:18 - followed by a woman's hand sliding up a man's crotch. Well, you can't get any more "accessible" than THAT.

Nobody cares that you are American, which has nought to do w your critique of the English penchant for allowing their audience to understand, immediately understand, what is being sung onstage. This goes for discs as well. Why not?

Not quite true. Many operas have been translated. The libretto is kind of co-incidentally in a certain language. There is nothing sacred about it. PS I'm not American, for which I give thanks on bended knees every day.
@TheStockwell
@TheStockwell 9 жыл бұрын
Armin Hanik I agree. Every opera CD or DVD I get has a multi-language libretto with it. With just about any classical release, notes are provided in multiple languages. In performing opera live, however, projected translations/supertitles are the norm, not singing in the language of the "host country." In San Francisco, Italian operas are sung in Italian, German in German, etc. Among other advantages, this means someone such as Placido Domingo has never had to worry about what language he has to sing "Carmen" in. The original French generally does the trick. At the Wiener Staatsoper, supertitles don't seem to be used. I saw a production of "Tristan" there. No supertitles, which sort of makes sense - if you're paying to see a production of "Tristan" in Wein/Vienna and still need to be told what everyone's singing about, maybe Wagner is something you should keep away from! As to being thankful for not being American, that's very popular these days.
@thesir27
@thesir27 9 жыл бұрын
Armin is right-- operas have never been "sacred" and its certainly not a modern thing to translate them for wider audiences. As far back as the early 1800's there is record of an English production of Don Giovanni, and for this someone even composed new music and altered certain scenes!

Everyone saying that this looks too gratuitous or that it's offensive, you clearly have NO understanding of what Don Giovanni is about. I for one like the modern day approach, and I'm already enjoying the darker tone this portrays. After all, this was Mozart's darkest opera. Why this offends you is beyond me. The original opera is about sex, sex, murder, betrayal, more sex, and death. If you don't appreciate this seemingly accurate modern day portrayal, you won't appreciate the original.

'Would any decent singer have got involved'? I think you need to listen a bit harder, all the leads are acclaimed singers. Christopher Maltman who plays Giovanni is a regular at Covent Garden where he has sang Giovanni and numerous other roles, also has appeared at the Met, Salzberg festival and many European Opera Houses. Its not at all an insult to Mozart, just a new interpretation of one of his works.
