I saw McLean perform twice in small venues in the 80s. He was my dream guy, an unattainable poetic god. I wore out several copies of his albums. Nowadays, my eyes are less starry, but I still adore his music. A few broken hearts and a few decades of experiences later, his poetry is even more amazing to me. :-)

A singer songwriter named Lori Lieberman heard Don McLean sing Empty Chairs live at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in late 1971, and she was so moved and affected by his performance that she wrote and performed the song "Killing Me Softly With His Song" about her experience. It was covered shortly thereafter by Roberta Flack, and went on to much acclaim. But it all started with Don McLean singing about being heartbroken.

Lori was moved by this very beautiful song, and indeed performed "Killing Me Softly." But the song was written by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel, who collaborated on many, many great songs.

Not true. She was inspired. Joted the idea for the song down on a napkin. gave it to a couple of song writers whose names escape me at the moment. And she performed the finished product. but it was her efforts that got it written. Then Roberta Flack heard it. And as they say "The rest is history."

When Sixto Rodriguez died the other day, someone noted the similarity to Don (vocally and stylistically) and as much as I've listened to them over the years I never noticed. BOTH SO UNIQUE. "Think of You" is a poignant example of Sugarman and LOVE LOST, much like "Castles in the Air".

Over the years, there have been so many songs that tell of failed relationships. None of them convey the pain and anguish as sincerely as this one. For those of you who've never experienced the tragedy of lost love, the words sung here perfectly describe the overwhelming sadness and heartache that consume the one who remains. You can't help but cry.

Poetry. Notice the use of alliteration...trembling tingle, beams of blue, fragrance of your flower. Also repetitive words - empty rooms and empty clothes and empty chairs. And the phrasing is sublime "a sympathy bouquet left for the love that's dead" and this, almost perfect stanza: "Moonlight used to bathe the contours of your face While chestnut hair fell all around the pillow case " This is poetry worth of the Great Romantic poets - byron, keats and shelley.

"Empty Chairs" I feel the trembling tingle of a sleepless night Creep through my fingers and the moon is bright Beams of blue come flickering through my windowpane Like Gypsy moths that dance around a candle flame And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did, I never thought you would Moonlight use to bath the contours of your face Chestnut hair fell all around the pillowcase And the fragrance of your flowers rest beneath my head A sympathy bouquet left with a love that's dead And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did, I never thought you would Never thought the words you said were true Never thought you said just what you meant Never knew how much I needed you Never thought you'd leave, until you went Morning comes and morning goes with no regret And evening brings the memories I can't forget Empty rooms that echo as I climb the stairs And empty clothes that drape and fall on empty chairs And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did, I never thought you would

According to Lori Lieberman, the artist who performed the original recording, "Killing me Softly" in 1972, the song was born of a poem she wrote after experiencing a strong reaction to the song Empty Chairs, written, composed, and recorded by Don McLean.[3] She then related this information to Gimbel, who took her feelings and put them into words. Then, Gimbel passed the words on to Fox, who set them to music. (source, Wikipedia)

I know the feeling, growing old is not what its cracked up to be, however, Despite failing eyesight and bones that are begining to let me down, i still get huge amount of pleasure from listening to artist like Don,and still can almost play myself to sleep at the keyboard, i have have the pleaure of seeing the effects on people when playing and singing, and have to say that i think its a more adictive past time than any drug, once you have been there you never want to leave, and its not the money that keeps you going back for more, there is a lot said in this song, clearly a reflection of the mans life and his ability, it seems everyone in the music game has found to a greater or lesser degree, the song or the melody that nobody forgets. This is one of those songs,, beutiful, could listen to this all day!!!!

Poetry in music. One of the greatest legacies of the 70's, bearing witness to the many changes unfolding, shaping up a musical culture serving as backdrop to the rude awakening of our generation, sharing experiences both unique and collective, giving us a sense of belonging, no matter what fate awaits our kind in the years to come. Troubled times and all, the song remains the same.

Brilliant - a great song off a truly great album. "I miss you", yeah BUT it's about someone regretting forsaking love, taking their love one for granted until they left and only then realising what a huge mistake they made.

I saw Don in concert last night and he was brilliant, He gave his all and came across as a lovely genuine person. He kept saying how he much he appreciates his fans and this is so refreshing. This song was the highlight of the night for me. One of many beautiful songs by a beautiful soul. Thanks for a fantastic evening Don and thanks for sharing your love and your music.

This must be one of the saddest, most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I was blind emotionally, to the fact that, (3 years), ago my sister was dying... tho I understood it intellectually. When she passed, it hit me hard... (I had pushed my emotions down so I could be her primary caretaker). I was crying and listening to music when I ran across this song. The words still bring heavy tears... "I wonder if you know that I never understood that although you said you'd go, until you did I never thought you would." 😭

I feel the trembling tingle of a sleepless night Creep through my fingers and the moon is bright Beams of blue come flickering through my window pane Like gypsy moths that dance around a candle flame And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Moonlight used to bathe the contours of your face While chestnut hair fell all around the pillow case And the fragrance of your flowers rest beneath my head A sympathy bouquet left with the love that's dead And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Never thought the words you said were true Never thought you said just what you meant Never knew how much I needed you Never thought you'd leave, until you went Morning comes and morning goes with no regret And evening brings the memories I can't forget Empty rooms that echo as I climb the stairs And empty clothes that drape and fall on empty chairs And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would

He always paint pictures with his words like a Norman Rockwell on everyday things about America. He sings in codes so graphic that it could mean anything that one interprets it to be. It touches all souls. Compiled and many decades after can be a history of a whole generation in America that future gens can learn from. I became a fan. thanks.

These days, with so many years of my life gone by, I now feel the true meaning in this lovely song. :'-( And, I never knew the inspiration it provided for one of my most favorite songs of all time. How cool is that? :-)

A young girl singer watched Don MacLean in a concert and heard this, then wrote a heart-felt poem about her experience. The following sequence of events is under controversy. Some say somebody stumbled on the discarded poem and made a song from it. Some say the girl herself transformed the poem into a song. There was a huge controversy about who was the real author of the song because the song became hugely popular. Anyway, the song that came out of the poem that was inspired by this song is 'Killing Me Softly With His Song'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_Me_Softly_with_His_Song
