was American Pie not a hit?
@trishmcginn Жыл бұрын
@@alfiebarker7724 Hi Alfie, I believe you misunderstood my comment. It’s not that American pie was not hit it certainly was. But his best songs in my opinion, his best writing more often than not we’re not hits. They are on his albums as deep cuts or something. McLean is probably the very best songwriter of his generation. McLeans solo concert were magical. Not only was his guitar playing outstanding and his banjo work phenomenal, his vocals were astonishingly good emotive, emotive. Absolutely love the guy. And I assume you do too. So that’s my response. Hope you have a great day oh heck great year.

I was born in the 50's, grew up in the 60's and that era of music inspired the writing of my own songs. Don McLean was an icon of that era. I have been reading some of the other comments. I am of Irish, German, and English descent. My Irish was from Dublin and Limerick. My English from Cornwall and London. But the point is, do you like the music? @legspin nicely said. Gay Byrne initially thought 'Oh God, this is all we need, an American coming in and singing an Irish song again'. That was his initial thought, then Don McClean started singing you could hear a pin drop in the studio & it was one of the great moments of the Late Late... it was just a guy with a guitar and a voice and a version, and it was magic.

Gay Byrne, the Irish TV presenter. tells the tale of Don Maclean singing this on the Late Late Show (iconic Irish chat show). Byrne said Maclean's version moved him to tears 'coz it was the first time he had heard anyone sing it with such pathos. It was a staple of irish sing-a-longs and parties for years but sung much more uptempo. Thus it's significance had been lost. Maclean's version showed the true sadness in immigration that song originally had.

In the original Percy French song, there is an additional verse which, unsurprisingly, never gets sung nowadays ... I've seen England's king from the top of a bus And I've never known him, but he means to know us. And tho' by the Saxon we once were oppressed, Still I cheered, God forgive me, I cheered with the rest. And now that he's visited Erin's green shore We'll be much better friends than we've been heretofore When we've got all we want, we're as quiet as can be Where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.
