Agree. Don McLean's lyrics are like poetry, so beautifully written and rhymned. e.g. Empty Chairs, Oh My What a Shame... Back in mid 70s, a friend introduced me to his songs and from then on Don's songs etched in my mind.

Awesome imagery/metaphors he uses like an artist on a canvas, painting us a surreal picture. One of the great American poets! Love his original stuff. Everybody Loves Me was a clever little tune that basically spells out American Foreign policy for the last 70+ years. Brilliant piece.

While the song's message comes across as somewhat preachy, the imagery and metaphors that McLean comes up with here is really striking. I particularly liked his comparison of life to interwoven thread, and yolk in albumen to sunrises. Here's the full lyrics: Every thread of creation is held in position by still other strands of things living. In an earthly tapestry hung from the skyline of smouldering cities so gray and so vulgar, as not to be satisfied with their own negativity but needing to touch all the living as well. Every breeze that blows kindly is one crystal breath we exhale on the blue diamond heaven. As gentle to touch as the hands of the healer. As soft as farewells whispered over the coffin. We're poisoned by venom with each breath we take, from the brown sulfur chimney and the black highway snake. Every dawn that breaks golden is held in suspension like the yolk of the egg in albumen. Where the birth and the death of unseen generations are interdependent in vast orchestration and painted in colors of tapestry thread. When the dying are born and the living are dead. Every pulse of your heartbeat is one liquid moment that flows through the veins of your being. Like a river of life flowing on since creation. Approaching the sea with each new generation. You're now just a stagnant and rancid disgrace that is rapidly drowning the whole human race. Every fish that swims silent, every bird that flies freely, every doe that steps softly. Every crisp leaf that falls, all the flowers that grow on this colorful tapestry, somehow they know. That if man is allowed to destroy all we need. He will soon have to pay with his life, for his greed.

A True Poet he says it like it is and so eloquently, so revealingly so and beauifully about some of us who aren't Content with All We Have Received; but are Always Wanting more than we need and sadly willing to destroy what we see if we can't have what others have. Human nature Oh So Lost.... None So Lost as He Who Doesn't Know He's Lost... and the Devastating Cost to All. A Great mind would not Suffer but for Compassion. It truly opens your eyes to your heart; is There anything so Fine in Humanity as a True Poet? Don McLean is someone special... God Bless him & his regards Sherril L.Carss

Tapestry isn't on my UK version of the album "American Pie", but you are quite right, it IS full of beautiful Songs, like "Empty Chairs" & "Winterwood", "Vincent", "The Grave" etc. Also do find "Orphans of Wealth"

well this one " tapestry", because you know in your heart its true.... "Vincent" because the line "this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" because thats true too.... and the third is "those were the days of our lives" by Queen because it was the end of one of the greatest talents in the world and I didn't want it to end. Or maybe I'm just too soft!?!?

@darththc As Ive been told: "I just want to listen to good music and not have to think"... I never enderstood this. Im into death metal, and hard punk, but damn, who could ever listen to music that didnt have feeling? Its art, the whole purpose of art is to envoke deeper thought and emotion, to unearth what is buried. I never understood when people said otherwise

For the 'record', I was introduced to this little masterpiece for the first time on Dons 'Best Of'--' CD EMI 'GOLD' c.2001. I'm guessing that he wrote it in the 70's, at the height of senseless ignorance about world polution.Over the decades, songs like this HAVE awakened people to the terrible state of air, rivers and shorelines etc, causing much new laws and legislation to improve our environment. Trouble is, the whole thing is at risk again from new industrialisation from China and India etc.

@atfatw People are not water . A person spirits can be crushed by unkind uncaring callous comments from from a person who clearly only sees the world from their own vantage point . It must be a lonely place where one looks out and is able to label an entire generation of people through insensitive ,unsympathetic , eyes . Cruel indifference has it's own bitter reward in that one usually finds themselves surrounded by the kind of person who is often too willing to agree. Misery loves company .

There are still many singer songwriters out there in this current day. They are overlooked by the music industry at large as the industry mostly wants to cash in on pop culture, safest return of investment. I grew up listening to the likes of Don McLean, Gordon Lightfoot, etc. And to think that humans have completely changed in one generation is simply showing laziness. You were young when these singers were young and it was easy to find new music. But as we get older we get less curious.
