Don Rickles (1926 - 2017) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, known especially for his insult comedy. A headline performer at Las Vegas hotel-casinos and peripheral member of the Rat Pack via friendship with Frank Sinatra, Rickles received widespread exposure as a frequent guest on talk and variety shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman.
Frank Sinatra (1915 - 1998) was an American singer, actor and producer who was one of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide.
American music critic Robert Christgau referred to Sinatra as "the greatest singer of the 20th century". His popularity was later matched only by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson. For Santopietro, Sinatra was the "greatest male pop singer in the history of America", who amassed "unprecedented power onscreen and off", and "seemed to exemplify the common man, an ethnic twentieth-century American male who reached the 'top of the heap', yet never forgot his roots". Santopietro argues that Sinatra created his own world, which he was able to dominate-his career was centred around power, perfecting the ability to capture an audience. Encyclopædia Britannica referred to Sinatra as "often hailed as the greatest American singer of 20th-century popular music....Through his life and his art, he transcended the status of mere icon to become one of the most recognizable symbols of American culture."

It’s so weird to see Frank Sinatra in 1970s clothes. I always think of him as wearing suits or tuxedos 24/7, even in bed, even in the pool.

Frank was 59 here and it was a different stage because we all remember him in the 40s and 50s with a hat and then the rat pack with a suit in tuxedos and then he got really old in the 80s and 90s but this was an error you don’t see them too much 74 7576

We saw Don at the Riviera in 1978, and we were out in line by the door and this guy comes by and tells us, hey you guys come back in a few minutes, and I said but we wanted good seats, just come back in a few. Well there was four of us and one was the John Perry my producer who was black. Well we come back and the door man takes us right down front. And before it’s over Don had John on stage going wild on him with black jokes, and I realized the door man looks for certain types Don can rib. I’m not exaggerating I laughed off and on for three months. Now days some bitch or bastard would try to sue Don. He sent John a giant bottle of champagne.

do that bit today, and self-offended snowflakes will be trolling on internet and news media, calling him for murder for all sorts of ~isms. it was a different time. people were smarter, and understood this was comedy....even the dumb ones were smart enough not to show how dumb they were and laughed along. and Don did not write jokes....he did it all improv. Frank and Don were gifts to humanity.....people of today, will do well to watch and learn about them....

I think Rickles performed to an audience that was more cohesive in its social views. With the wide divisions in society today he wouldn't have a general audience cohesive enough not to be offended or not to get it, so to speak. Imagine Bill Maher making jokes at national Baptist convention. The audience isnt in sync with the comedian's angle or perspective. Rickles is great to me still. --- But to say snowflakes couldn't tolerate Rickles is like saying the Baptists can't tolerate Maher. It's dependent on the audience's perspective on the world -- right or wrong. The better or maybe more successful comedians -- like politicians-- have the ability to appeal to a broader audience. Our divided society makes this harder for comedians and politicians -- past and present.

You said it man. First of all you can see how intelligent and gifted for comedy Don was, he could tap dance his way out of every situation.Just simply naturally gifted, his acts were not found offensive, although he worked in very sensitive era, cause people could feel, I believe specially ones in audience, that he is warm-hearted .He was just having a laugh, trying to make people laugh to their own differences, by ridiculing stereotypes he wanted to show the beauty of diversity, the necessity of diversity, simply he wanted to show us that is above all just natural to be different. Instead of being angry, and hating diversities he wanted to show humanity, similarity, simplicity of being different. Above all he wanted to introduce one concept, one unique human feature that everybody understand, one language that every single race, color, ethnicity or gender perfectly comprehend and that is humor and laughter.Laughter and smile are the only ancient, inherited "weapons", relics ,that our ancestors left us which can unarm anyone. God bless you Don, I am sure even though you are a small,bald-headed Hymie ,I am sure that some of Sinatra's old pals arranged with Christian God for you to be in heaven with Frank and two of you are now, pulling someone's leg :). I am sure even the Almighty now is laughing to your jokes. You were simply the greatest . :)

I adore this guy and consider him as someone who can be understood and appreciated only by smart and educated people, people of good will and pure hearts. You are obviously one of them. I am so glad to be able to share my opinion about his comedic genius .In my country, I am from Serbia, people do not know anything about him, it's a pity.People can not understand English on this level, and they have no knowledge of the background of his jokes, as American TV, Pop culture was not that present in our region at that time. Sheer, profound talent for humor :)

@@miloscuk6351 That's amazing to me you're from Serbia and have such appreciation for him. It really is. You know the true story about Rickles who met a black man working at a comedy club in his early days. Rickles told him that if he made it big, he'd take him with him. And he did for years and years until his friend died. Rickles retells the story briefly when he was in his 80s and started to cry -- almost. He teared up and said how much he missed him and wished he was still with him. What a beautiful story and tribute to the man. It really impressed me. I tried to find a link to this story but couldn't...All the best and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
