Rickles was a comedic genius. Of course that was an era when people had the ability to laugh at themselves. He's still funny to me and will always be one of my favorites.

Carson will never be equaled. Rickles and Dangerfield came on the show. He just let them go wherever they wanted to go. He'd interject something, they'd keep going and he just sat back and watched it unfold. Those days are gone for good.

@@OMGWUNSIU I'm sorry, Jay Leno, a VERY good standup comedian should NEVER have been behind any desk. He was horrible and actually pissed off Rickles on one appearance, the only time I have ever seen Rickles mad during an interview. Leno is not witty, which you need to be behind the desk though his written act is hilarious even to this day Letterman was # 1 Carson #2

The man is an absolute legend. He really was extremely quick witted and definitely pushed limits. But at the end everybody laughed together and knew it was just a joke. That’s what’s lacking these days. Everybody is offended by everything and afraid to laugh. Well it is time for that to end. And it will very soon. People need to get a grip on reality! LAUGH!!!!

Man, I grew up in a glorious time in the world! We had Buddy Hackett, Rodney Winfield, Don Rickles, Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers, Rudy Ray Moore, Norm McDonald, George Carlin, Jackie Mason, Rodney Dangerfield, Alan King, Redd Foxx! I am sure there are some funny comics today, but as we age, we tend to look back at our past for what was familiar and good for us then. We seldom explore new horizons! I love a good story teller, and all of these comics were the best!

@@Bondek1996 His show was badly treated though. Johnny used to moan and complain on his show about how ITV treated it. London Weekend Television were the company who purchased the show. However instead of airing new editions, they took highlights from the previous week and edited them into a 50 minute edition. This meant so many monologues and routines never aired in England. Only big star interviews, the odd Carnac routine and that was it. A lot of Ed's bits were never seen, and apparently British viewers wrote in asking what Ed McMahon actually did on the show?

Wow I remember that last ...it was just different then... It was history. They looked tired plus they were behaving differently and not for the worse! I don't know if I have the exact words to say how important it was to see them leave and walk off in the sunset. oh by the way what fun it was to have Rickles on for one last time.

+albanymike I've watched many hours of Rickles over the years (I'm 60 years old). Don tells the same "jokes" over and over and over. I can almost predict what he's going to say. Also, whether he's good or not is not written in stone. It's a matter of personal preference.

+norelco pc I'm only two years younger than you so we are from the same era. . Sure he has been better, more inventively and hysterically caustic. I simply put this appearance in context as his last on the Carson show, Bittersweet nostalgia when I still considered myself young. I blame KZfaq. Lol
