The late, great Don Rickles. Unique, unequalled, never to be repeated. RIP

I adore Don Rickles now just as I did when I was a young girl watching him on TV with my parents in the 80's. His talent, wit, and sarcasm are unmatched. No one could possibly fill his shoes. Plus, he was a classy man, unlike the punks and wannabes that are shoved in our faces nowadays! Mr. Rickles, you were DEFINITELY worth your salt. Please keep my mother laughing in Heaven!

One of the times Don did his bit in a empty studio. No wide shots of dais while he's roasting. Just edits of the others laughing. Don said that he did this a few times. Time wouldn't allow him to be there in person so he did his bit later. Another reason for this was sometimes the original material bombed (usually another star who was at the roast and was edited out) Greg Garrison would call Don to do 5 minutes. This happened on the roasts from the 70's too. Stars would be asked to come into studio and re do there bit or a new bit because the original had fallen flat at the actual roast. A great example of this practice is the roast for Danny Thomas. When Lucy gets up to do her 5 minutes it's just close ups of her and a wide 2 shot of her and Danny. Problem was Danny's hair in the 2 shots is completely different from the rest of the roast. In the original roast its "slicked back". In the Lucy spot it's dry as desert. Anytime you see nothing but close ups of the speaker and no wide shots of any of the dais you can bet it was done in studio after the original roast. Another sign is when the speaker is going to and from dais. Camera is high enough to show that star's head and shoulders usually. But is doesn't show anyone sitting in their chairs as he or she walks behind them going to and from. And even after all that and the general heavy editing of these shows. They're still wildly entertaining. I bought the whole set when they came out a few years ago. And watched them as a teenager growing up in the 70's. P.S. Even when Don kisses the hand at the end of his 5 minutes you don't see who the hand is actually attached to......you can bet it ain't Joan's!!

I have to say, that looking at Joan Collins now, in 2016, with how she looked back then...she was beautiful looking. I never paid much attention (if at all) to her and the other prime-time soap stars because I despised those shows (Dynasty, Dallas, Hotel, Knots landing etc. etc.)...could not stand them; might've been an age thing (born in '73) but I have to say, Joan Collins is beautiful

If you were a fan of reruns of shows from the 60s, Joan Collins was a guest star on Star Trek, Batman, and Mission: Impossible. In the 70s, she was also a guest star on Space:1999. I never watched those dramas either - born in 69. I was aware of the TV ads for the shows. I knew her from Star Trek. I recognized her more recently while watching the reruns of the other shows as an older adult. I never watched Mission: Impossible though.

Sometimes on these old Dean Martin roasts, due to scheduling conflicts, roasters would record their set after the event and it would be heavily edited to make it seem as though they were really there. This is obviously one of those times. You never see anyone else in the frame with Don, all of the reaction shots are quick cutaways, and even the quality of the footage seems to fluctuate between grainy and clear. Don always seems a little off and a bit stiff when he's not actually performing live... I think he thrived on the reactions he got, both from the other celebrities and from the audience. Nevertheless, I think he was one of the funniest fellas that ever lived.

This was one of the last roasts, done around 1983. By then, the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast was little more than a promotional vehicle for the networks to promote their hot shows. You'll note that there were only a handful of actual comedians on the dais and Diller and Red Buttons aren't known for their controversial comedy. Times and tastes in humor had changed anyway.
@dannyflynn56815 жыл бұрын
This one was also not recorded live but after the roast, you can tell by the lack of any real cutaway shots or reaction shots, even at the end we don't see him actually embrace Joan Collins, that could be anybody, so the performance here certainly does lack a lot of energy, and probably the live energy that he needed to come alive, like compare this to the Frank Sinatra roast when he's electric

Mark Eggins That’s not true at all that by this time people were being offended by his humor. There’s always some people that take things the wrong way, his career went way beyond this at full steam. And I don’t know where you get it from the video that John Collins was offended. She look like she was laughing to me. And by the way the stars knew who was going to roast them before they came there.

@lindashelley36353 жыл бұрын
No, it’s a shame that some people can’t be bothered to look beyond Dean’s carefully nurtured ‘boozer’ stage image and the real truth about his prodigious work ethic. Between his film career, his many gold records, his popular TV shows ( For which the hard-boiled NBC executives paid him a record-breaking $34 million - not bad money for a ‘drunk’) and live concerts in both Vegas and theatre appearances, Dean was probably one of the hardest working entertainers of his time, one of the few to have THREE stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. And you can’t maintain that kind of successful career for more than 50 years if you ARE an alcoholic!
