Otis Blackwell recorded as an artist in the early fifties, but by 1955 had decided to focus on songwriting. He co-wrote Fever, recorded originally by Little Willie John, his big break came when Elvis Presley recorded Don't Be Cruel and stuck very closely to the style of Otis's Demo recording. Otis later wrote All Shook up, Paralyzed and Return to Sender all big hits for Elvis. Remarkably Otis Blackwell also wrote Great Balls of Fire and Breathless which became signature songs for Jerry Lee Lewis.
This is the chorus from the Original Demo recording of Dont' Be Cruel by Otis Blackwell, probably recorded in December 1955. The only way to hear the entire recording will be to acquire a Very Rare NFT featuring the entire song by collecting the right combination of NFT's from the Otis Blackwell NFT Collection - A limited edition Collection of 1956 NFT's designed to honor the songwriting legacy of Otis Blackwell
Here is the Link to the Listing of the NFT's on Open Sea and also to the Minting DAPP as well as an explanation on how to earn the Bonus NFT's featuring the Full Song or the Chorus

Wow!! Where did you find this? Is there a way to obtain the full demo? Otis' demo even has the laid back backbeat which Elvis achieved by hitting the back of his guitar.

this is the unreleased Demo recorded by the writer . So Elvis’s recording would not be considered a cover as it was the first first version to be released to the public, but its quite wonderful to hear Otis Blackwells original Demo.

Cool to hear this after all these decades. What's most interesting to me is that Photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer was present during the Elvis "Don't Be Cruel" recording session when Elvis first listened to Otis' demo. He talks about Elvis working on the intro of the song coming up with ideas and suggestions with the band members. At 1st Elvis strummed along on his acoustic guitar to the sheet music, then Elvis played it on the keyboard for the Session piano-player. Since Otis' demo was done on piano, Elvis worked with the guitar player Scotty Moore to come up with an intro and asked Scotty to "put a little more space" between the guitar licks, then Elvis had the drummer DJ Fontana come up with drum part behind the guitar intro, but Elvis suggested to DJ to "Come in behind Scotty, and slow it down a little". (Elvis essentially was the acting Producer of that session. This also verified by others at session) ... Mr. Wertheimer said Elvis actually created "two separate arrangements" ...one was closer to what Otis submitted on his demo with just the piano, but Elvis also created one that was quite a bit different apparently. Ultimately Elvis decided they go with the one we hear on his official recording. A real shame the tapes from that recording session did not survive to actually listen to Elvis and the band working through all of this, but I suppose we're fortunate to at least have eye-witness account. The alternate version that Elvis created unfortunately never saved on audio. That would have been interesting to hear how that came out. Anyway, have spoke many times over the years myself with people about pondering where Otis' original demo was and if still somewhere out there. So this is interesting for sure. Would definitely be interesting to be able to hear rest of Otis' full demo at some point after all these years.

Hi Jay, thanks for sharing more of the background on that session... I'm looking forward to making the full Demo Available, it really is superb and a testament to Otis as a Performer as well a songwriter, I think since the recording pre-dates any contact he had with Elvis, we can really appreciate what an impact Otis had on 1950's Pop Culture and the important role he played alongside Leiber and Stoller in providing Elvis with the material to stay at the top of the charts!

@@jonjacobs9055 yeah Otis Blackwell played a Big role on 1950's pop Culture for sure not only for Elvis ( Don't be Cruel, All Shook up, Paralysed) but also for Jerry Lee Lewis ( God rests his soul) with "Great Balls of Fire " . He also wrote good songs for Elvis After he returned from the army I mean the 1960's : Make me know it, fever and Return to sender .

@Jon NEVERDIE Jacops, I'm very interested in the full version of this demo, but I know nothing about NFT's. Is there another way to purchase the audio file? Thanks in advance. :-)

Hey David, not just yet... If the NFT thing doesn't pan out, might release, a limited Edition Vinyl. For now just want to let the interest build and make an event out of the release of the Full Demo... ( Sounds great though. So Glad to have found it.)

Elvis did not cheat him out of it. Blackwell was writing for a company called Hill and Range, which was one of two companies used by Elvis to find songs. Blackwell said making the deal to write songs with Elvis was the greatest deal he ever made. He wrote others for Presley.
