For those who are unaware, additional tests to detect fake gold or silver coins include the neodymium magnet test, the weigh scale test, the caliper measurement test and the pinging sound acoustic test.

I only buy from reputable bullion dealers. I always test my bullion with either my Sigma PMV Pro Mini and/or GVS Bullion Tester. I also only buy current year bullion; most if not all fakes are prior year dated coins. And I don’t buy rare and expensive coins if I don’t understand it or can’t confirm authenticity. I believe in KISS principle when stacking - keep it simple stupid!

You just reaffirmed my opinion on mostly avoiding 1oz coins. You have a lot less to lose if you get stung on a fractional piece.

I’ve seen a fake GML on KZfaq (forget who posted it). The fake GML had radial lines and does the light cartwheels when you tilt the coin. But what the fake GML could not do is replicate the very fine radial lines of the original. Original GML has very fine radial lines and are very closely packed to each other. Fake GML has radial lines that are spaced out more. If you compare a fake to the original, it will be very obvious which one is fake. So it’s important to look at the details.

The ones that irritate me the most are those advertisements on TV for gold coins with micrograms of gold.

Transmission (hard) X-Ray Spectrum Analysis is the only non destructive test to detect fraud. Cheap way is to melt or cut it and use (soft) handheld X-ray gun to look at cut parts.

I bought two 1 oz bars from private party 8 years ago. Wish I had known then what you and others taught me since then. I sent them to Texas refinery and found out they were tungsten. Seller refunded me for one but refiner lost the second burnt up bar do I couldn't get refunded for it. It was ugggggggly time. I've found when the Sigma resets mode with a coin test the coin usually has some iron content. The counterfeits are unfortunately getting more clever all the time. Some of the newer 'bad' products can even fool the Sigma verifier, XRF, etc. I won't buy silver or gold now, even from a trusted LCS without verifying authenticity via multiple independant nondestructive tests.

My best advice is to buy all gold and silver coins and bars as brand new (not pre-owned) and from a reputable bullion dealer that is an authorised reseller (not an individual on eBay). It gives a better guarantee of authenticity.

When it comes to gold coins, I stick with graded.

New maples are almost impossible to fake. Radials, microleaf, and knowing diameter, thickness and weight... no way to fake even with tungsten.

I have the PMV mini that reads all the way through the coin, plus wands for bars. Anyone who buys PM should bite the bullet and spend the money on a good tester IMO. But first you should only buy from trusted sources. I bought mine for estate sales and such. A lot of fakes especially Morgan’s I have found in the wild and the PMV has saved me $.

I have the Sigma PMV Pro Mini, great tester. I got it so I can take it with me to coin shows (not test the coins in front of the dealer 😉), estate sales, and of course check my purchases. For a stacker, having any one of the Sigma testers is a must have to protect your investment. The pocket pinger and the associated app is an option for the budget conscious. I bought that kit with the fake coins as well. Good video Sal!

A $5 Chinese piece of crap nothing more than lights and stuff being sold for $2grand have to be EXTRA cautious on all purchases these days. I suppose there is a possibility that my LCS could have sold me a fake gold but I doubt it. I only buy there or from well known online dealers, I am pretty confident they are real but it never Hurts to check!

#124. Great video Sal. I have a Sigma now only after spending over $800.00 unfortunately on Seated, Morgan’s and Peace dollars, but they were Street silver, so I have no one to blame but myself. I still have reservations about the coins because out of the 32 coins, four have the arrow all the way to the right and the other 28, the line was just outside the brackets. I did the magnet test and they seem fine. I’m waiting for my pinger to come in the mail and run that test. No real special dates either. It’s hard to fathom that they were all fake. Thanks Sal ✅, I have the Sigma Mini Pro with 3 wands. Works great with bars and coins, for me Au, Pt, Pd & Ag. Using the full mini pro and a calibrated scale encompasses all issues around resistivity & density differences for these PM’s. Operator error can be reduced by educating oneself on resistivity measurements (ranges for each PM) and proper use of base unit and wands. ChrisCard

My Sigma Metalytics tester is the best investment I made just over a year sgo. Tested all my PM's with no problems found as of yet. Yes it was pricey but well worth it. It along with a scale and magnet are all I use to test with. I test everything with all three methods together. I've seen where some show it not to be 100% reliable but I haven't had that problem with it yet.

This is the first time that I have ever seen a fake Philharmonic, Mr. Sal. I never thought they would even try as the design details of the Philharmonic are quite intricate and difficult to copy. I guess not. I appreciate the vid!

Canada has so much gold that if they need to ban and buy it back you only get $50. Gold is plentiful here still but prohibited for mining until the revenue is required as the state gets a share of all gold mined.

If you have the golden eye you will know a gold coin is fake immediately

It's not really that hard to be sure the item you have in your hands is mostly gold or not. Weight, size, ping. Check frequency with app, some apps even let you put in dimensions, weight and purity for unknown coins and come with qualified estimate of whether or not it pings as it should. Some years ago I won a local online auction for a "coin" (commemorative medal actually with a picture of an ancient coin on one side) below gold price. Checked it every which way I could and I even ended up calculating the density at around 16 g/cm3 which was very good for supposedly 21.6K (.900) considered the equipment at my disposal (no tool above $10 used). I eventually found the coin collectors association which had the "coins" made to celebrate the city's 700 years anniversary. They confirmed it to be genuine and only approximately 45 was ever made in gold and a little more in silver and bronze. No wonder I didn't find any info on at it at first anywhere.

Should at least do 3 different test modes to authenticate your PMs. Weight/dimensional/Resistivity/Ultrasonic/Specific Gravity. The PMV test Resistivity only. None of those test by itself is conclusive, only Ultrasonic test can't be compromised, yet.

I have 2008 and 2009 gold maples, but they have no reeded background around the Queen's portrait just a flat background. Are these fake or generic rounds and not actual gold maple leafs? The edge of the coins are reeded. Update: the radial lines on the faces were added in 2015.

I bought a fake 1/2 Oz gold Pamp bar about 5-6 years ago. It was in a crimped poorly done blister pack and appeared to thick and slightly scratched and tiny tarnish spots. I sent it back, got a full refund. About a week later the bar came back to me as the seller refused the package.

I hope that they spend a long time in jail and anyone else doing the same

I agree that the portrait on the Maple Leaf is really bad. But why did they put George Washington on a Canadian coin anyway? But seriously, the Royal Mint did a much better job on Her Majesty on their Britainnias, as did the Perth Mint, and others. I love that the Britannia has so many micro-engraved security marks and features. Also the Perth Mint Kangaroo's incredibly tiny, laser-etched "A" that they include inside a letter on the reverse (and both countries include their features on both silver and gold coins). Newer silver Krugerrands also have some interesting micro-laser etching on them. I haven't purchased a newer gold Krugerrand, so don't know if they have this feature or not. These are better features than the lame "missing reed" on the AGEs. I haven't seen any stacker channel do a video on these different micro-etched security features - maybe it would make a good video!
