Cheap knockoff Rockbros pedals versus the original One Up composite pedals. These pedals look the same, but I can assure they are not!!!
Now I'm all about finding a good price on a set of mountain bike pedals, and I've seen guys like Seth from Berm Peak test and ride knockoff pedals with no issues. But that's where todays video gets interesting, because I found some MAJOR problems with these cheap knockoff pedals.
While searching for the perfect set of pedals for my mountain bike I found the One Up composite pedals, but I also came across a very similar looking set of pedals made by Rockbros. When you look at them online you don't immediately notice any major differences:
And the one up pedals are actually on sale right now FOR JUST UNDER $40, but like any respectable Chinese knockoff brand, Rockbros offers there version of the one up pedal for an even cheaper price of less than $25.
But it's obvious that they stole the design from the one up pedals. Maybe they purchased a set and scanned them. Maybe they used a Chinese spy balloon (look up, hide pedals etc,).
Well I wanted to get to the bottom of this, and figure out:
What's the really difference between these two pedals?
And how are they offering these Rockbros pedals for so cheap?
And I started to notice some major differences right out of the box. Watch the full video to find out...

Definitely could be a one off set I got. I’m glad you’ve had good results with them. I tried to smack the rock with the same force on the One Up pedals, and was just really surprised that no pins snapped. You can definitely see the difference in quality when you pull the pedals apart, but if they still last for a long time then maybe that doesn’t matter as much as I think it might 🤷🏼‍♂️

I took have a pair of RockBros flat pedals on my emtb and haven't had any issues with them. I always thought "knock off" brand where made in someones basement - fly by night, no name 3D printer that malfunctions half way through the 'printing' process AND has no reputable brand name on it? RB's are decent and they're A LOT more expensive than $20.00 ( I believe I got what I paid for ($45.00) The ONLY thing I think RB could have done a bit better was to lengthen the spikes a couple millimeters.

For the price, the rock pros on sale are a no-brainer. Just take them apart and re grease them with marine grease or lucas red and tacky. Problem solved. As for durability, I can live with a 75% life span vs the one up's. I had these one up's for 5 years, serviced them yearly. The bearing and bushings still seased and granaded during a group ride, my right pedal litterly flew off the spindle. This happened last week on a steep climb. This is the problem with the bike industry. To many little components costing 2 to 10 times what they should be. Especially trivial stuff like grips and peddles. Rock pros and other knock off companies take iconic designs from crank bros, one up, race face etc, and provide them at a fraction of the cost. Especially aluminum peddles that cost 150 on average while the knock off go for under 50. Currently I bought another Chinese knock off brand off amazon for 25 Canadian. It's a nylon version of race faces aluminum affect peddle. We will see how they do till one up gets there blues back in stock. The good thing is one up is slowly lowering there proce on these peddles. They used to be 69 Canadian, now they are down to 59 regular. I understand costs of RND, but when you have the same product for more then 3 years and have covered these costs 10 fold. It's time to lower the regular price drastically. Especially on small components that wear out regularly like grips, peddles, chain rings, chains, and cassettes.

I had my one up composites which I have used almost every day for about a year the other day just to see if they needed to be serviced. When I pulled out the spindle it looked exactly the same as the brand new on in this video. The grease had no dirt in it, there no signs of dirt or any moisture inside the pedal. I was thoroughly impressed and decided to just reassemble the pedal without doing any service to it. For the price the one up is hard to beat. I’m sure that other name brand pedals such as race face Chester would hold up similarly.

Great review - subscribed. I'm a beginner rider of a recumbent bike; legs are stretched out in front of you. I don't like the clipless idea, and I've heard others say the MTB pedals with pins will help prevent recumbent bike "leg suck", where your foot slips off the pedal. Can I ask some really simple questions? Can you use the One Up pedals with normal running shoes? Do you feel the pins through the soles of the shoes? Do they damage shoes after a while? Finally, my wife has a 7 1/2 shoe; are the One Up's too big for her? Many thanks!
@JaredHoff
@JaredHoff Жыл бұрын
Thank you for subscribing 👍🏻 I’ll do my best to answer: Running shoes can work short term, but the soles aren’t stiff enough and they will wear out and get chewed up by the metal pins. One up pedals should work fine for 7 1/2 shoe, but there are so many good options and it’s such a personal preference. These are my favorite shoes. Considering i'd been lazy to change my ancient (with bike delivered) Wellgo lu-a54 for the last ... a lot more than 10 years, until one of the bearings finally gave up the ghost and that the first pair of composites went bust inside a year... there's not much to be said about composite anything in a pedal. And they were proper, from a respectable brand, bought from one of their dealers (not gonna name and shame, i understand that not all experiences are the same). As far as i'm concerned, aluminium is the way to go, composite or plastic... basically the same as far as my riding tendencies go. Without the crank arms protecting them (mine originally came with 12mm of meat from the outer part of the thread and i welded an extra pad when they began wearing down) i feel they would've broken even faster. Composite materials are great... just not for pedals... well, maybe for casual riding, like going to a park and riding down a flat trail/commuting.

Perhaps you tested the RB's "knock offs" against the 1's... I myself own a pair of RockBros flat pedals and I have never had a problem with the pedals. I always thought that the definition of "knock off's" was a item copied without a reputable brand name on it? I really don't think RB is in the market to be copying a different brand in hopes to pull the marketing carpet out from under anyones feet... That would be extremely time consuming for anyone to accomplish when they could be designing their own products. If the brand insignia wasn't evident anywhere on the product - be it a pair of flats or bike shorts... Then yea, that's definitely considered as a knock off. The Dollaramma/General Dollar sells knock offs, as an example!

And while you mention materials the pedals them selves are made of, you dont actually know what either is made of.They are all made in the same country. Then do not buy cheap pedals but the good quality pedals. But if your taste of ride is "ENDUROAD". ENDUROAD meanings an mtb biker who like riding bike in the national road. Cheap pedals is the best choice.

I had other rockbros pedals and they were horrible. I replaced them with aluminum sixpack pedals I bought at the shop at discount for only 10 or 20€ more than the rockbros because the model wasn't continued. It's now my favourite pedal ever. Reliable, has tons of grip and I feel good because I am supporting a local company that does really cool stuff. Sometimes a few bucks more is really worth it and less noticable in the wallet. We germans say: buy cheap, pay twice. Keep up the videos👍
@JaredHoff
@JaredHoff Жыл бұрын
But cheap pay twice for sure! My favorite pedals are a set of $180 Chromag Daggas, but I know that’s too much to spend on pedals. I think the One Up composites are as cheap as you need to go. I wish there was something they could do to stop Chinese companies from selling identical copies of there pedals that could potentially fail 😬

The thread lock just keeps that dust cap snug. It doesn’t contact the spindle or bearing
@HindsightFPV
@HindsightFPV Жыл бұрын
Nah there's absolutely no need for thread lock on that end cap. 1. it's not detrimental to the performance of the pedal and 2. It's literally the same principle as a nylon lock nut. The threads on the aluminum cap have plenty of bite into the nylon. I've been in these pedals for almost 3 yr without issue.

Why are Rockbros knockoffs? Are they identical to 1up? Clearly not. Do they claim to be 1up? No. If they are similar, in color, Then are race orange pedals knockoffs? All companies make similar pedals, similar size, similar looks, why do you only call rock bros knockoffs? Now I’ve owned many bikes from lower end to s-works, currently have 3 pairs of 1up alloy pedals. Absolutely love ‘em. But one of my 1up pedals broke a spindle during a smash. Do I think 1up are bad quality? No. I also had rock bros before, absolutely love them too. I never broke my rock bros, so should I conclude that rockbros are better quality than 1up? With your logic, every smartphone after iPhone is an iPhone knockoff. I’m ranting because I happen to know some people who work at Rockbros, they too try to deliver quality products while staying competitively priced. Anything wrong with that? Why do you have so much prejudice and hate for them? Because they are good and cheap?

@@JaredHoff by the way, I don't know if you heard about the story of the rise of Giant bicycles, the world's biggest bike manufacturer. When they made their 1st batch of bikes, they were all returned due to not meeting quality demands. Now what do they do with returned products? Sell to Africa or other poorer countries for cheap and recover some cost? They didn't. Instead, the owner put these bad quality bikes in the middle of a street, and complete crushed these bikes with a bulldozer. He publically announced that they will never make low quality bikes again, and later they became the world's biggest bike company

Your conclusions are quite subjective to say the least. From the fact that Rockbros need hammer to remove spindle while 1up can be done by hand, you can also conclude that Rockbros have tighter seal unlike the cheap 1ups. While using cheap composite materials instead of alloy, still charging crazy prices compared to rockbros. I don’t mean to bash 1up, I love them. I just love rockbros pedals too. And reading the comments section, a lot of people actually like rockbros too. If you keep calling them knockoffs with no apparent legal evidence, they do have the right to bring legal action to you though. I don’t work for rockbros so I’m not speaking for them, I’m just speaking from a legal perspective

@@JaredHoff if you talk about similarities and "borrowed ideas", clearly they do seem similar to one-up. thing is that, Dior and Prada copies Chanel, Samsung and Apple copy each other's ideas too. Would you call them knockoffs of eachother? Probably not. Why? because they are big names. Idea borrowing happens in the bike industry too, like most enduro frames are going the high pivot route. Is there anything wrong with that? The point I'm trying to make is that Rockbros isn't counterfeiting other brands, they didn't call themselves "TwoUp" either. In that sense, Knock-off is quite a strong word. Your video is quite comprehensive in pointing out the weaknesses of Rockbros, which could help them make better products in future. You do see that their market proposition right now is price, which is significantly cheaper than north american composite pedals. so getting the most bang for the buck would be their main concern.

@@JaredHoff a few hundred years ago, German engineering were cheap copies of British engineering, fast forward a few hundred years, german engineering is seen as great quality. in the bike industry, Japan copied US, then Taiwan copied Japan, then China copied Taiwan. a few decades ago Taiwan was the cheap knockoff makers, as of now, so many global bike brands have their R&D and manufacturing in Taiwan, and China is trying to catching up too. Chinese people don't like knockoffs either, nobody does. it's just a developmental process.

@@JaredHoff speaking about the spy balloons, that's a communist dictator's political act, not an act that has anything with rockbros. not every German was a nazi, not every Chinese is a communist. You are a good bike youtuber, not a political channel. You may be surprised to see how many chinese people hate the communist dictatorship more so than you guys in the US. Yes they spy way more than just using balloons. they use spys to infiltrate and steal US technology, which is not knockoff, that's complete stealing. they have recon bases in cuba just to "surveillence" US. I don't even wanna begin talking about politics. If we start talking about politics, there are so many channels out there just for that. Your channel is bike related and your viewers watch you for bike related contents, so I'm sure they'd wanna see you keep it that way.
