I like the interaction between YSJ and SS in this scene somewhat. YSJ has let his guard down that even his own mother notices that he likes SS even though SS is engaged. The phrase - IF ONLY & its too late (or is it ?) comes to mind.

Definitely 'if only' and 'it's too late'. I've just binge watched LLTG again and it is still very watchable. It rates as one of my favourite dramas of all time. It's just wonderful and I loved the humour that was running through a lot of the episodes too. SJ was one of my favourite characters and part of me would have liked to see SS end up with him. Even when he was talking about his parents relationship and loving someone deeply enough, you just know that he does love SS deeply, just differently to the General. I felt that he would never marry anyone else.

I think Shoashang is the only woman who is smart enough to engage Yuans attention. She challenges him and he needs that. They might have been happy together if Ling Buyi hadn’t gotten to her first

I think that Yuan used conceitedness as a shield and armour to protect himself. At first I thought how arrogant he was but then I realised that he wouldn't let anyone close because of his parents. When Shaoshang came along he fell in love with her but still wouldn't drop his guard at first. He was one of my favourite characters. LLTG is one of my favourite dramas of all time.

@@philomenawhitehead7840 I do believe the same. He was extremely intelligent but with Shaoshang he became like an elementary school boy who is mean to the girl that he likes. I loved his elocuence and the General could see him as a rival. I loved that scene at Yao's wedding. I really was heartbroken with the three break ups 😭.

As the drama continues, I came to the realization that Yuan was attracted to ShaoShang because she wasn't like the rest of the other women who normally swooned over him. He liked to challenge her in provoking her - Her opinionated personality was like a breath of fresh air - here was a female who talked back to him in their interactions. However, because of the way he was going about it, it didn't exactly endear him to ShaoShang. I started to feel sorry for Yuan because it was a one-sided love. He showed it in the way he was protective towards her & supported her but always from afar. I loved that the actor expressed what Yuan was feeling in his unrequited love through his facial expressions and his eyes. Yes...he could be an arrogant jerk at times but he became a very sympathetic character for me as the drama went on.

YS being condescending, all-knowing, antagonistic to Ss is like an opposite to LY. LY follows SS like a puppy and won't go against her. LBY is the perfect balance in between.

I think his character upbringing made him wary of loves but underneath it all he love SS in his own way. I think he was scared to truly fight for her affection
