Thanks for watching! If you guys have any questions please shoot, and we'll go through them together. :) Please "LIKE" the video if you dig the content, and PLEASE check your thru hulls, they are responsible for many sinking boats. Much love! -James

Why so many through-hulls? I paused the video and counted off your sheet and unless I miscounted, I counted 32. 32! That seems... really high. Shouldn't some of these be converted to "combo" through hulls that serve multiple duties, thus allowing you to reduce the total number of holes in your boat? It's like every single thing in your boat that could produce moisture has it's own dedicated through hull.. That seems really inefficient and a source of many, many headaches and points of failure. But then again, I've never owned a boat. I'm a "KZfaq Admiral". So maybe I'm talking out of my ass and don't even realize it.

Good question. Firstly, not all of those point are thru hulls, that paper marked the location of all pumps and above-the-waterline hikes as well. The way the boat was made, there are big stringers sectioning off parts of the boat, it would be very difficult to consolidate all of them, but definitely SOME of them should be doubled up. 16 is excessive.

James, here’s the thing: I’m fed up with videos edited to the guts. I’m not here for some netflix crap here. I swear I’m more entertained since you have this raw stuff going on. I feel involved, a lot more attached, and I got to see all the rough edges. A LOT more credible. Despite the fact you are not sailing I watch your channel a lot more than the other sailing channels. Sugarcoating and nice landscape shots are overused - I love this back to basics thing thats going on with you right now. I couldnt care less about online soap operas soaking in lies. Cant wait to see the next post!

I'd replace 100% on a 10-year rotational basis, but I'm fanatical about that ever since my step-dad's boat sank at the dock in Booth Bay in 1980. Also, I'm big fan of Forespar's Marelon products. No electrolysis issues.

Any plastic has to have a resistance to UV radiation deteriorating the plastic. Plastic would get crackly and if hitting a dock it would possibly shatter or crack. If making the standards not substituted with cheap Chinese stuff and greased every haul out, I would think they would have a long life.

As a British bloke who grew up as our country changed over to metrics, I'm amazed by how many of our 'standard' weights and measures are still in Imperial units. We go to the pub for a few pints, we drive home in miles, and most people think of fuel economy in MPG. We would never talk of a distance in kilometers or meters, and so many other standards are the same. Many of us still think that 80c is warm, because we work in fahrenheit still. 27c degrees sounds cold to me, even though in 'f' it is 81. At school, way back in the 1960s we had to learn BOTH standards as the European Unionists and their masterplan started to forever alter the way we lived. One benefit of this though, was that our money went from this (known as LSD - pounds, shillings and pence): 4 farthings or two halfpennies to a penny; 12 pennies to a shilling; 20 shillings to a £, ie 240 pennies to a £. We also used florins, half-crowns, crowns and guineas. Most of these also had colloquial names It was a fucking nightmare to add up a column of amounts, and had to go. No wonder poor bastards like Scrooge spent so long adding up figures by the light of a solitary candle until late at night. People misjudge him. Possibly. America has wisely and stubbornly refused to metricate, and when I moved to live in New York for a few years in the 80s it was a dream to find tape measures ONLY in inches and feet. I was a roofer and sider, and so we used 'squares', which I'd never heard of before. It was a dream come true to be British once again. PLUS I could drink more pints than I'd done before, because an American pint has 16 fluid ounces while a British one has 20 fluid ounces. I'm not sure how that happened, but maybe it was a deliberate alteration like the different spellings we employ, eg color, neighbor etc, which I think were part of an organised change back in the early 1900s. Anyway, James you are a top bloke, 100% solid, decent and intelligent, and you convey information with quite remarkable clarity. You are much loved by your viewers, so please always be safe and have many happy adventures on your new boat SV Britannia (ha ha). One minor suggestion: I bet your women viewers would appreciate a female-only crew, so they can be proud of their gender's achievements on board. Men are ok, but really not decorative, so may I humbly suggest you only have luscious crumpet.....ooops, I mean LADIES on your boat. You know it makes sense! Fondest, kindest wishes to you! Mike.

Wow that's a lot of thru hulls. Thanks for the tour and diagnostic process. Your videos are highly informative and educational, and you're doing a service to the entire human race by making them. I'm not joking. Thanks! Please keep teaching! For anyone who doesn't know, thru hulls are to let water in or water or waste out. They're a hole in the boat with a valve on it. The valves are only opened when needed. If a thru hull fails, the boat can fill with water and sink. That's why there's an emergency bung next to each one to plug the hole if something breaks off or otherwise fails. In fact many boats have sunk due to the thru hulls failing and the sailors not being able to find the leak in time. That's why a chart of the thru hulls is pretty much required.

Great videos. I lived on a 33 ft Bristol and a 27 Island Packet. Those thru-hulls need to be inspected often. I found that out the hard way! I pulled my boat in Green Cove Springs and the prop was like clay (crumbling in my hands) Thru-hulls were beyond pink!. All because of a bad gound in my shore cord. As you well know, those can get very expensive, but well worth the effort to replace. If I learned anything from living on a boat.....KNOW YOUR BOAT !!!

James, something I am a big fan of is combining through hulls if you can, on my boat I was able to get rid of several of my through hulls, moved a couple above the water line. Less holes in a boat under the water line are always a good thing! Especially with the holding tank and toilet discharge, you could combine those into one, and remove the through hull under the shower seat, then that locker could be painted up and used for storage.

James, this is my first comment. I'm retired now but sailed my entire adult life here in the Pacific Northwest. You are 100% correct to start with these thru-hulls. Had a clamp break off on a friends boat and fortunately the high water alarm worked and we saved the boat. I knew something was wrong because the boat was dragging along loosing speed. I hope wanna-be sailors buying an older boat see this excellent video and take heed to do what you did.

James the orientation of handles on all the bikini or 'ball' valves I have encountered can usually be altered by simply undoing the nut and relocating the handle. Therefore the handle for valve on the through hull for the cockpit drain could be repositioned to the other side where it would not foul on the hose that is currently in the way.

Great warning on the thru-hole fittings. Just got my boat in the water a few years ago, right after delivery. In the water, I checked a fitting attached to a 2" gate valve attached to the thru standpipe. One touch with a pipe wrench and I had a 2" diameter fountain out of the bottom of the boat!. Around the same time, my neighbor was woke up at 3am on his boat with 1ft of water in the cabin from a thru-hole fitting that shattered under the shower area in the head. No access, with 3 pumps running, he used a chainsaw to cut out the floor to plug the hole. He was only a couple minutes from sinking. If he was at sea, it would have been over, no recovery! Thanks from Boston MA

One of the best things about our Whitby 42 was that it had a sea-chest. It didn't eliminate every possible seawater inlet but did greatly reduced them number of them. I think from one inlet we had 6-8 outlets.

I know they are expensive but I would change every one of those valves and thru Hull fittings. Losing a fitting at Sea can all the boat. Safety safety safety. BEAUTIFUL BOAT‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸

Last guy that owned the boat was smart I been on a lot of boats with no bunge anywhere to be found around the through hauls always have a bunge tied to your through haul and keep a mallet where everyone on the boat knows it will be most people have no idea how much water will come through an open hole 1 1/2 or 2 inches below the water line it can easily over whelm your pump when your fumbling around trying to find something to stuff in the hole and a hammer to drive it in tightly
