I think I would prefer an Oztent RV4 over a rooftop tent. I usually just use a small throwup tent, but as I get older, I don’t want to be crawling in and out of a small tent, I don’t want to climb up and down ladders when I need a piss in the middle of the night, but I do want to standup in the tent and have enough room for a comfy stretcher bed.

I couldn’t agree more 🤙🏽 the stairs when you need to piss is a real killer haha

I am the put up a base camp and explore from there of camper. Roof-top tents have their advantages until you have to drive down the road to get milk and bread or go to the beach or a game drive and you find someone has taken your deserted spot when you return. No ladder, stand-up height, place to store camping furniture when you are away from camp, able to move furniture inside on rainy days and setting up a cozy room with a stretcher, roll-up mattress and proper duvet set together with a fold-up cupboard makes this a definite winner.

Roof top tents aren't that great. You're basically sleeping in your car. With a twnt you can go where ever you want and camp. The freedom aspect of camping in a tent/swag is superior to a rtt.

@@arkhamkillzone For a purely overlanding setup which is one night in a location, rooftop tents saves a bit of setup time and at a pinch you can sleep in a rooftop outside a hotel where it is impractical or unsafe for a tent. The moment you need to set up a base camp for multiple days any conventional tent wins hands down, especially if you use your vehicle to explore by day.

Roof tents and attached awnings are all fun and games until you need to drive somewhere and have to take down your entire camp to drive to the servo and get a bottle of coke.

Great review , I have an RV5 and love it . For overnight camps I stick with the basic set up but if I’m staying a few days I instal the side walls and the front wall . Don’t know where your located but I’m in Vic and the enclosed front annex is a winner in the colder areas . They are expensive but worth every penny in my opinion as you can easily expect 10+ years from these tents , thanks again for your no bs review.

Great review. I have an Oztent RV4 and I love it. I will always keep it. The original tent bag basically rotted away and I replaced with a high quality Drifta canvas bag, made for Oztents. It's larger to make the pack-up easy and it's far better in the rain. It includes a waterproof zip. (No leaks to date). I also have the side walls and the front panel. I only install them if I'm camping for a few days or I need the second room to accomodate extra people, or to create an insect proof room or if the weather is poor. I like to use the fly to provide better rain protection and to keep the tent cool in hot weather. It also reduces bird droppings on the main tent and helps me to reduce a wet tent for packing up.

I've been using an RV-3 for the past three years here in the US, purchased used from a couple that had taken it to all the 'iconic' North American camping spots. My wife really loves the tent with a full size air-bed, as we have room to spare for gear. The tent came with all the accessories. To me, the awning is a huge advantage over a standard tent, we use an additional set of peak poles and two spreaders to really create a large, outdoor living space. Typically attaching an 8' x 10' tarp to the front in order to create additional shade or block rain / wind.

We have an RV3 (for us) and an RV4 (for young adult daughters who want more room) and love them both. Great tents and we have endured some serious storms in them without any damage. We looked at all options of tents and rooftops, but settled on these, with no regrets.

Had my rv5 for about 15 years. Getting thin in parts and looks more grey than green but it’s been home for many many nights. Tag along tent is great and a side panel makes it a bomb proof base camp. Upgraded storage bag for a waterproof one coz wet storage is when this tent gets damaged.

Great tents I have an RV1 and an RV3 I use the RV1 most as its only 1.5 long and has the biggest awning, they stopped making the RV1 recently? but for solo its perfect. I spent a lot on tents and swags and should have just bought the Oztent first up, had my two about 4 years now, I always peak the awnings though as it stops water pooling, I also use a spreader pole in the front and middle because it stops any flapping in the strong WA costal breezes.

Had our RV3 for ten years. Genuinely the best bit of kit we have ever bought. We had condensation night one, ordered the fly, zipped it on and left it on even when we pack up. Never had condensation since. Used it as a semi permanent camp left up and in all weather 6 months of the year three years straight. Agree with everything you said about rooftop tents versus this as have used both. Both have pros and cons as you pointed out. We have the side panels and use them in the cold and wet. In the dry, no need. Simply love this tent and couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I am switching to rooftop. The quick setup, especially when moving camp each night sold me. Can use our ensuite as a change room, that way it can be packed away the night before, with all the other gear, if we want a quick getaway in the morning. The advantage of not needing a suitable tent site also sold me. Rocky, uneven ground is no longer an issue.

Have had an RV5 for 10 years . . . but as I go out 4WDing and Camp in a different spot each night by myself, I mainly use My Camp Stretcher and Swag. But if with a group and in the one spot for a couple nights I still take the OzTent. My step-father and I used My OzTent on our 18 night Simpson Desert trip back in 2012. The RV5 takes 2x Camp Stretchers easily and each night we attached the tent's awning to the cars roof rack which gave us shelter when it was raining and early morning dew which kept our camp chairs and kitchen dry . . . the OzTent's are a Great Tent System.

Another option, if you can track one down, is a OzTent Jet Tent Maverick. It's lighter, cheaper and probably won't be as durable long term but mine has been holding up well for almost 5 years. The thing that sold me on it was that it would fit in the cab of my Jeep Wrangler 4 door and the frame is on the outside, which is preferable for winter camping.

It’s easy to set up and about the same. Eliminates the dew as well. Highly recommend my tent. Had in 40 knot wind with no problems and in summer it survives the summer heat.

On long runs when staying for a night; these being so quick and easy to setup is a plus. Pulled into Nindingully, and the nearby campers said they literally looked away with nothing on ground and back again, and saw us with tent up, chairs out and beers in hand. The negative for the tent is that it can have a tendancy to get a little warm. Good in winter; bad in FNQ summer. Wife also calls it the "poo tent" (colour). Where this really comes into its own is if you have the foxwing, as it makes a seamless and quick setup if staying for any length of time. (we also have the tag-along as well for extra space).

They are great tents, easy to set up and pack up. I have had my RV4 for 9 years and it has been great. The only issue is the weight but it is a touring tent and is very strong. I have the complete set up, the only thing I would not get again with it is the tag along add on.

Great set up video. I agree with most of your pros/cons. I have an RV2 that I’ve been using in it’s basic setup for around 6yrs now. I love it. Set up is easy as and doable even with muscle loss from prolonged illness. They discontinued the RV2 size a few years back which pushed me to buy all the accessories for it before they were gone! 😂 I’m loving the full setup - so front wall, side panels, floor saver and rain fly - for stays of a few days. Gives me a protected front room to get away from bugs and adverse weather. I’m 6’4” so can’t stand up in it unless I have the front room attached, but it suits just me. I invested in mine because I could no longer roll my swag(muscle weakness and illness sux) and the fact that it’s considered a four season tent. OZTents are costly but so worth it long term. I find that making sure I have at least one of the vents above the door open, regardless of weather & the fly attached, helps with condensation. You’re still going to get some but unfortunate that’s a con of single skinned tents. Happy travels. 🇦🇺👍🏻

I have the RV3 and I prefer it to the RTT's we've had in the past. Having something we can stand up in for changing clothes and quick cleaning (whores bath/wipes) is really nice and the misses doesn't miss climbing or falling down the ladder at 0300 to go to the bathroom. I use spreader bars for the awning to keep the center from sagging and I have the extra poles to peak the awning if needed/wanted as well. There's no sense in adding the side walls IMHO, or at least we've never longed for or needed them. I agree that the mesh floor is a nice add and should be high on the list of recommended accessories. I need to add the rain fly but up until now it has never been missed. The standard bag it comes in is kind of tight and not the best, one should consider an aftermarket replacement once it fails. They aren't cheap and they are heavy and awkwardly long when packed away so you need ample bed space or a full roof rack in order to carry one easily. That said, I think they are an excellent option to have in the quiver and will hold up to have around for many years to come. If you can pick one up second hand you can save hundreds and that's what I'd recommend.

Great review, many thanks. Good to have a long term perspective overview, as I have ust bought the same model and havent used it yet. I also managed to pick up the sides cheap second hand as poles were missing. I modified a galv pole for the spreader bar, and will use 2 galv poles. I may make another spreader for the end of the awning as well. Im hoping I can carry the tent on my roof. Hoping that its waterproof enough with bag and tent being canvas anyway. Do you have any experience carrying yours on the roof and in rain? WOW that self inflating mattress you recommend is expensive. I have a thicker queen size which I might stick with until I win lotto 🙂 I didnt buy the fly as Im hoping I can get away with my 2mx3m canvas tarp and couple of poles. I have seen that others recommend the fly for condensation and reduce heat, but im told that the front vents should always be left open. The other plus on the fly is apparently protection from bird and bat dropping to save the canvas. Looking forward to getting out in mine. Cheers

Look up Drifta and buy a few of their poles, they come with caps, are thicker, also can come with feet and built in led's. But you have redo the grommets, as they are thicker but are 100% better than Oztent poles. I had the Coleman 4 person pop up whilst it served the purpose, takes 2 people to pull down, I now have the RV-5 Plus and the only issue after two uses, yes I know 🤔🤨😬 is the zipper to the fly, awaiting a response. Love it!

I had one for a good while, eventually got rid of it. Biggest downside is the extreme condensation that rains down when you inevitably touch the sloping roof, second problem is the sides flapping in the breeze. If you're shorter than 5"9" you can stand up without hitting the roof at the extreme front of the tent, meaning anyone taller will get a shower on a cold morning :) I now use a Coleman Easy Up tent - much lighter, same setup time, can stand anywhere in it, no condensation problem. But it is flimsier and also flaps in the breeze. A lot cheaper too.

I have a few different tents and the RV4 OzTent is one I've had for many years. It really IS a 30second tent as they advertise. It can be removed from the bag and be freestanding in a little under 30 seconds, however it's probably more like 10 minutes by the time you peg it all out with guy ropes etc... longer if you add the 2 poles, ropes & pegs for the awning. With that in mind, I ended up getting a new tent which was twice the size, cheaper, and doesn't need guy ropes unless you fit the optional aftermarket awning. Having said all that, I WILL be using my RV4 this coming weekend for an overnighter, in conjunction with a 3x3 gazebo. I find the biggest downside to the oztents is the size when packed down. Thanks for a great video. 😃 Edit: as far as using it without the guy ropes, I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law so... unexpected/unforeseen wind gusts ... all guy ropes on before bed time let's me sleep better.

@@scott8907 I have about 5 tents all up, each suit different situations but if you mean the tent I mentioned that's twice the size (can fit 2 queen beds) it's a "Kodiak Canvas" spring bar tent. They were $999 when the RV4 was $1199 but I believe they're more expensive now. Upside: Packs down smaller than the RV4 and the bag is a "wrap around with straps" type bag so you don't have to be perfect when you fold it up. Downside: It's 10kgs heavier and comes in two bags (2 bags is also an upside.)

There a brilliant tent mate and I remember buying one when they first come on the market a looooong time ago but I made the mistake of lending it out to a “mate” who parked it up to close to the camp fire and turned it into Swiss cheese , I never did replace it and now I have a good swag on a fold out cot under a good 270 awning . So called mate….now my son in law couldn’t afford to replace it 🙄 Love the Chanel boys 😎👍🍻keep it coming , Cheers , Kim .

Considered one of these before our RTT purchase. Unfortunately the price in South Africa for one of these is equivalent to a RTT and for our current needs the pros here just don't outweigh the cons. Best ground tent though.

They are an awesome tent and about the easiest one I've ever put up. HOWEVER, they are too long and unless you have a wagon length roof, not much chop re storage. That's why a got a Blackwolf. Folds up to half the length.

Agree with everything you said…..Only thing I would add is when it rains the front awning tends to catch and pool water, so the peak poles for the awning stop this.

Set one pole lower and that creates a run off point.

These tents look good but they are crazy expensive and huge when packed up! Carrying it on the roof is really the only option.

Another great Vid.. Wouldn't 12mm x 200mm coach screws make life even quicker? Taking into account you lot carry a few battery operated tools. Stay safe...

How does it go in the rain. Also as a single wall tent how is it in the cold weather.

No issue in rain, and cold weather i'd say just like most canvas products- keeping warm is more about your sleeping bag etc.

David both my RV1 and RV3 have been in heavy rain a few times and never leaked, the additional awning side panels are good for keeping the cold wind out of the awning area, I only ever use one side panel as a windbreak though, I have never had condensation and both my Flys are still new in the bags but I always have the rear panel open a bit and pegged out, If ya dont like getting out of the sleeping bag you could always buy a Onesie lol

Can pack the tent away with the fly attatched to the tent. Con, the bag the tent comes in is garbage and weathers in the sun. They do a travel case which is much larger and fits everything in it... but the material on it is pathetic. Con the foot print of ur campsite is much larger, compared to a swag or roof top tent, thus havingbto pass up many a good site due to not having room to set up. Con the packed up length is like 2 meters long. Pro probably the best tent on the market, bar none. I agree with other comments, get the spreader bar for the awning. Be interested to hear thoughts on the james baroud, i dont think people can fit as much bedding in them as the company claim in advertising.
