It is always great to go to a bike fitter like Jason who has a doctorate in physical therapy. Truly understands body mechanics and the relationship to a bike plus, all of his top finishes in races really helps him to understand what is needed in a high-quality bike.

My wife is a pelvic floor physical therapist. Every time I show her a bike fitter on youtube she usually isn't too impressed (sorry to all the bike fitters out there, maybe it's just the youtube factor?). It's not that there isn't a value in what bike fitters do, it's that people tend to chase physical issues down through bike componentry rather than physical rehabilitation. She helped me get comfortable on my fixed gear for 100 mile rides and I'd guess 20% was saddle position, 80% was strengthening my core and stretching off the bike. Your perfect bike fit is going straight out the window once you get tired and lazy with your form, usually from not engaging your core to support your extremities. You could have a perfect reach and bars exactly shoulder width but the moment you stop holding yourself up by your core and rely entirely on your arms...boom: sore wrists neck and shoulders, probably low back too. Also she's like "WTF??" when they put the points on the screen to measure angles. Those should be dots stuck to your body and located precisely by the person measuring by poking around your body feeling for the bone locations. Just putting a point "on your hip" or "on your knee" on the screen is a general proximation and not accurate at all. If I'm paying good money for an angle measurement with a decimal point, I want my hip socket located correctly. I probably sound like I'm coming down hard on bike fits, I think they are valuable, but only a piece of the puzzle and not as significant beyond your general sizing on the bike as people give them credit for - especially if you aren't a sponsored pro weighing your meals and hooking up for blood transfusions.

Yeah, measuring angles is pretty much useless. Not only it's incredibly difficult to get a reliable result (2 bike fitters trying to achieve the same angles will most likely get different results), but mainly they're made from some averages from a random study or something. What if you're more flexible then the average? What if you're less flexible? What if your hamstrings are shorter/longer, so your saddle can be lower/higher then what the angles would suggest? All of that the system doesn't take into consideration

Jason/Endurance saved my lower back. My saddle heights were all a full inch too high and I was getting debilitating pain every ride, thought I had a slipped disc, went to my doc, doc sent me to Jason, spent an hour getting fitted and w/ new measurements for saddle height, all pain was gone in a week. It should be noted too that he's also a miracle-worker when it comes to post-shoulder surgery PT.

I have read articles on bike fit and watched videos over the last 10 yrs and every "expert" has their particular ideal fit. Like this guy was saying, everyone is different physically, so in my opinion, there's no one size fit. I spent nearly 5 yrs fine tuning my road bike fit by making adjustments according to different bike fitters' suggestions. Even though I didn't have any major discomforts, I did notice what seemed to be the best fit for myself, I felt better after a ride. I think the biggest mistake some riders make is making large adjustments or making adjustments too quickly between rides. I followed James of Bike Fit Tuesdays from Cade Media for several years and made some adjustments accordingly. I haven't had to change anything since in over 3 yrs.

Jason is a good guy! I went to him when I was experiencing leg and hip pain as my ride lengths increased. In addition to the bike fitting he's also a physical therapist. Bike fit isn't always about getting the best efficiency, sometimes it can actually eliminate certain types of pain. Riding more efficently is just a collateral benefit!

The way the fitter is measuring reach doesnt take into account the handlebar reach, handlebar width, shifters, or shifter position which can change a bikes total reach by a significant margin, upwards of 100mm in some situations. if you are keeping the same bar and shifters across multiple bikes then saddle to stem is an easy way to check but it misses a few very key components on the bike.

Stupid question: Why BB to seat? Why not pedal to seat? Crank lengths vary, as do pedal stack heights. I've always put the crank in the 5:30 position and measures from pedal top to seat and it works well across my fleet that contains 165-175mm cranks and a wide variety of jalopy pedals.

Honestly, it's probably doable for most people who care to have one. I'm only buying one bike to last me many years of commuting/errands/leisure activity, so it's not like a fit is much of a recurring cost. That said, I think most of us can get close enough with manufacturer guidelines and online instruction to set the saddle height that a professional fit isn't necessary for people riding less than 10-12 hrs per week. Maybe even more.

You would likely need to be an outlier on sizing to not be able to get an optimal fit on an off the shelf frame. Especially in Dustin's case where he rides a 56cm frame which is one of the most common frame sizes for men in the 5'9" to 6' range

@02WRXrally your wife's comment should be pinned to every bike fit video. A bike fit is a snapshot of a moment in time. Your body changes with fitness. A friend who races advocates for two fits, roughly beginning, and mid season. At the least saddle may need to be raised as legs become more flexable. My personal opinion is a fit puts you in a reasonable window. It is not set in stone. If you have a good sense about how your body relates to its position on the bike plus a few videos from the few reputable fitters on YT then it may be a DIY operation. Other than that, I'd look for a sports oriented PT with a good amount of bike fitting experience.

For road and gravel fits make sense, maybe an XC MTB but for trail and enduro MTBs a fit makes no sense because you're standing and moving around a lot, and there's a lot of personal preference on reach, stack height and HTA/STA. I don't think most people would benefit from a custom frame, only people who are either outliers on size or want very specific geo numbers not available on off the shelf frames. Most people should be able to get their contact points fitted optimally as long as they're on the correct frame size for them
