Another suggestion: before buying new speakers, really experiment with new settings within your current system. I've owned the same A/V receiver, speakers and sub for almost 2 years. Last night I was playing around and using my sub's phone app, I changed the Phase form the default setting of 0 to 90. Instantly my entire soundstage changed. Was getting punched in the chest by the bass with no loss in detail or speed. Play around with what you have!

Every time I read about or hear about speakers I’m bummed bc my stereo speaker buying is essentially done. 🥲 I have a couple pairs of stereo floorstander models, one 2k/pr (warm-ish, great for some music and forgiving, down to 37 Hz) and the other 6k/pr (very detailed and tight, down to 25 Hz), so I’m basically done on the high end. I recently went wild with spkr videos a while back (a lot of them CAM’s) to get me CAM (stealth SPL for bedtime listening) bookshelf speakers (quite happy, thanks Randy for the 4”ELAC’s) and now it’s down to getting a suitable soundbar and sub for occasional TV. Not super big on HT. Thanks partly to Randy, I also have upgraded DACs on both systems, purchased multiple WiiM Mini’s for streaming convenience, and even upgraded 2 phono preamps, although one was out of necessity. I’m not in the market for mini amps or headphone amps, so that stuff doesn’t suck me in lol

They don't have to be the latest new model, Simon. I recently got a new-in-box pair of Klipsch RP-160M stand mount speakers. Now I know for sure the newest RP-600M II is a definite sonic improvement because every reviewer in the world has said so. But these RP-160Ms rock AND the price difference means I could get a decent sub too for 2.1 listening for the same $$$ or less than the new speakers. With internet searching these days we have so many alternatives.

Thanks for the advice CAM.. Curious if anyone has been so smitten by a pair of speakers that they purchased an identical second set for another room in the house? Ah, Randy... Do I hear the voice of experience? (lol) How many audio purchase skeletons are in your closet? 😂 Yeah, I've got about that many as well. One thing I have learned about buying speakers, especially for those buying on a stricter budget or with less experience in the Hi-Fi hobby... Don't get locked into a 'latest, greatest' mentality. Just because a speaker is NOT the current model doesn't mean it isn't a good choice for you. Research is your best tool. Just for example, the current Klipsch RP-500M II and RP-600M II stand mount speakers are favorably reviewed, and their MSRP is $599 and $749, respectively. Yes, they do go on sale occasionally for a couple hundred less, but their 'older relatives' can still be purchased new-in-box for $200-$250 a pair. By now, those previous-generation RP-150M and RP-160M models have a history of positive reviews that the current models hope to live up to. But if you've never heard any of them, is the newest model really worth the extra $$$ to you? That difference in price could net you a nice subwoofer, pay for lots of streaming, pad your monthly budget, or even take your favorite person out to a really nice dinner. And you'll still come home to some great sounds!

Good advice as always. For many years Ive been very pleased with my PSB X2T, they sound great with my Peachtree so why risk mucking with a good thing? I try to play higher quality formats over the mixed bag that is you tube, but honestly given my aged and tortured ears Id probably be hard pressed to tell the difference, either can still bring a tear to my eye and thats what counts in my book. Guy with a 2 W tube amp here. There probably aren't a lot like me out there, but tube amps have a higher output impedance and a much lower damping factor compared to transistor amps, so speakers that are reactive or resonant as a result of the manufacturer trying to extend the bass way down can be boomy. And it's annoying So if you are able to pack your 2 W amp along and try the speakers first, I would suggest you do.

Hey Randy, congrats for putting up excellent content. Just a noite on frequency response, you have to consider the room size. I have to sets of Pioneers here, one with a small 4 inch woofer that is rated at 55hz, and other a 3-way with a bigger 5 1/4 inch woofer that can get down to 50hz. There's no doubt that the bigger can go lower, but in my small listening room the smaller sounds better by not overwhelming the space. And regarding speaker sensitivity, one may want to pay attention also to impedance. Most small bookshelfs are 6 or 4 ohms, and not every amp (certainly not many AV receivers) will be able to drive them.

@shipsahoy1793
@shipsahoy1793 Жыл бұрын
Well, you also need to consider how loud you’re planning on listening to them, at what distance, and what the speaker sensitivity is, then you can decide on the required minimum amplifier power necessary. In that size room, stereo speakers that are about 2 to 4 cu ft in total size will be fine. If you plan on a sub or two, you can go with bookshelf speakers on stands, but if you get bigger boxes, you’ll want full range performance if you are avoiding adding subs.

@@walkerb.8689 I can tell you my used ADS L520 I happened to luck into from a coworker are great. And he only asked about $200 for them. The cool thing about ADS is that all their crossovers used high quality poly capacitors, even back then so the values don't drift like the cheaper electrolytic ones do, and they used a material for the surrounds that doesn't deteriorate. All in all, I've been very happy with them in a system in my bedroom. I don't think they do extremely loud well, but if you listen at 65dB to 85dB from a relatively close distance, I recommend them highly. Imaging is amazing on them. And yes, they have a slight warm sound, especially to the midrange, and the bass you can hear is no joke. They are larger than the DBR62 so yes, you'd need some short stands for them, maybe ones angled at 5 degrees or so. Another important specification to look at is impedance, arguably even more important than sensitivity. If the minimal impedance dips below 4 ohms, you will need a reasonably powerful amp to drive your speakers. Also worth noting is that manufacturers often cheat with sensitivity numbers, so don't just trust whatever the specification sheet says. Oftentimes the real sensitivity is way lower.

I aways remind people of program material, no one knows what sound reinforcement music sounds like, rock, electronic, dance and rock off-shoots are all sound reinforcement (SR) music, so it is easy... buy the speaker that matches your idea of what YOU think it should sounds like. Acoustic music, however, is completely different, accuracy is all important, we all know what a delicate ride cymbal sounds like, what a high hat sounds like, what a live vocal sounds like, what a violin/cello/viola/oboe..exc...sounds like. Then we have really good tone controls to have one system for all music. Just a little EQ makes a huge difference. And if you are a big bass lover, a sub can add what you need, and turn it off when you don't need it. In 2023 I don't understand the lack of equalization in home music systems, we should have digital stereo graphic EQ in the 15 to 31 band per channel in our DACs pre analog. This device while still in the digital realm is proven every day by recording studios fine tuning and crafting sounds. IF not graphic EQ, the parametric EQ while in the digital realm. Why? And for those still listening to vinyl and tape, some great EQ like the recording studio's use will add that final warmth that may be missing. EQ and mixing levels are the two most used features in a recording studio to balance a mix and make it sound wonderful to the engineers objective. Then for those who want to simulate a concert hall we need rear speakers with delay and reverb processing NOT surround sound; with reverbs and delays YOU control the size and shape of the concert hall. No studio recording is going to sound like the concert you went to in a large auditorium, but with two speakers in the rear playing just delays and reverbs, your listening experience can be enormously enhanced to your level of liking.

Another point of consideration, you may prefer the budget speaker over many of the more expensive, "higher end" as well. It depends on room, taste, equipment, even expectations. While many brands have a different sound, something new may sound not as good until you give it a chance, or time to let your brain adapt and able to highlight what it does well. You may then prefer it over another presentation, or be happy to flip one for the other depending on music. But if you really can't stand a speaker and can explain why, probably no amount of adjustment will help. So a 30-60 day return window is good to have. No return or 15 day usually turns me away unless I know I will like it. Then, once you have a system you like, particularly the speakers, if you happen to move to another house, apartment, etc., you may find its previous charm no longer applicable. Speakers can sound that different from one room to the next for a variety of reasons. I also prefer small speakers and can add a sub. After you have handled enough big speakers, you'll come to appreciate that size does matter, and that smaller dongles may be advantageous if not outright preferred.

My dream speakers would be the Elac Uni-Fi 2.0 or Debut Reference but those are way outside my budget. Is there a poor man's alternative? Do you think the first-gen Uni-Fi would work despite the rear port? or should I look at the Debut 6.2 despite it's thin bass? Any sugesstions?

ELAC is running a 50% "B-stock" sale right now. You can get the Debut 2.0 B6.2 6 1/2" Bookshelf Speaker (Pair) for $199 or the Debut 2.0 B5.2 5 1/4" Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) $164.90. These might tide you over for a while and give you the "ELAC sound". Sorry, but no Uni-fi or DBR are in this sale. I have a pair of the Debut 6.2 in my computer room/office and they do fine. I just turn up the bass a bit using tone controls or kick in the "Loudness" button on my old Pioneer receiver I use in there to drive them. I feed the DAC in the old Pioneer using an optical out from my computer. Good luck.

@@walkerb.8689 ah, sale was supposed to run through the 5th. Rats. But yeah, I like mine. I know Randy (CAM) mentioned he thought the smaller 5.2 had better bass, but considering I paid only about $199 or less for mine 3 years ago, I'm happy with them. I'd say they are not bright speakers, but they don't sound "mushy" or too rolled off. But to be honest I'm 64 and my top end in my ears is at 13,000 Hz now. So I don't know if they'd sound much different to someone with 20KHz hearing. I will say they like a little power. I don't play them overly loud in my small office room, but I think they are happy to have an amp with a little reserve in play behind them. Well, shoot. If the sale is depleted, I hope you have good luck finding something. Do know that many of the regular KEF speakers seem to be on sale for 50%. Some reviewers say that the KEF Q150 (can get for $299 now at Crutchfield) have actually BETTER sound than the larger Q350. You might want to check those out. I think CAM reviewed the Q150 maybe about two years ago. You can search for that review on his channel page. Good luck!

Sometimes the cheapest thing is to use what you already paid for. In my computer room/office I use an old Pioneer AVR that was made before the days of HDMI. Instead of throwing it away or selling it dirt cheap, I put it in a closet for a few years. Got it out and for stereo duty it does OK, and even has a built in DAC I can feed optically from my PC. Yeah, probably not the best DAC out there by a long shot, but it works and sounds OK to me feeding some ELAC Debut 2.0 I got on sale for $200 a few years ago. Regarding used speakers, keep a look out for local Facebook Marketplace. Probably better and safer than eBay or the crazy shipping at Reverb. Everyone seems to love the "new" Polk R100 and R200, so maybe try snagging a used set of those. Of course one of the easier "audiophile" speakers to get used are the KEF LS50 (the older model). They seem to be everywhere and might be OK if you listen in a small room. Hope you find something you like.
