Candid and unsponsored review of the 8 prong and 2 prong hold punches from Sinabroks.
These are my initial impressions after punching several hundred holes, and I compare them to some much cheaper versions I bought over a year ago on Amazon.
To answer most people's first questions; Should I buy Sinabroks? Are they worth the high price?
Short answer: NO. Just with the 8 prong hole punch, which I bought to help save time, there's quality issues, measurement issues, and simple usability issues.
Now, later in my review, you'll see I have nothing wrong to say about the 2 prong. But, if my goal is to save time by punching 8 holes at a time, then there are other options out there. Cheaper, better ones.
I don't know if they take returns, but I'm definitely going to try. I know buying them through Buckleguy, you can't return them. So buyer beware!
Edit: Yes, I do use a punch pad. Yes, I've tried using an acrylic mallet. No, I'm not a beginner, I've been leatherworking for over 4 years now. Yes, I measured the spacing directly on the template (all pages) and I measured the spacing on the prongs. No, I'm not doing this "for the views" and No, I'm not getting paid for any of this.

Judging from the mushroomed head of your tools, you are using a metal hammer, that is not a great idea on those types of tools, especially anything with a brass handle. The sharp blow from a metal hammer can also help loosen up those set screws on the punches. So switching to a polymer or rawhide mallet would be a good start. And as someone else also mentioned, a drop of Blue Loctite from any Hardware or Automotive store onto the threads of those set screws will also help keep them tight. That is what it is designed to do. But you can still take the screws out to put in different tips if you want to, just put a fresh drop on the threads when you do. I am not familiar with the pattern you are using, but I know there are 1.0mm and 1.5mm punch tubes for that tool. I would measure not only the spacing, but also the diameter of the hole, check that against the pattern and see if they are the same, you may have the wrong size punch tubes in your tool. Hope this helps.

Do you have an opinion on the best tools for punching leather for stitching?
@jeremyfagergren
@jeremyfagergren 9 ай бұрын
I recommend starting out simple. Buy the cheap ones from Amazon. If you end up using them alot and get a better feel for what you need, and will be using the tool often? THEN think about upgrading to what the professionals typically use. Usually the professional version of some tools will last longer or stay sharp longer, etc. But if it's a tool that you're only going to use once or twice, for whatever reason, then there are alternatives to the expensive stuff. And I know there's even Pro's out there, 10+ years in the biz, that have never used pro tools. So, the "best" tools for punching for stitching? The ones that get the job done, within your budget.

The holes sizes are different that’s why it seems like the spacing is different. Blue locktite is your friend on anything with a grub screw.

If I see correctly, the diameter of the holes is 1mm? This pattern uses holes with a diameter of 1.5mm spaced 6mm apart and this is the difference.
@markwatts7634
@markwatts7634 Жыл бұрын
The pattern is most likely slightly off from exactly 6mm. This is due to the design program spacing the holes to fit. Tight corners will also have a slight difference to spacing. I have both slanted and round hole types and never had any issues. The 8 punch will obviously need more force to penetrate the leather, it's simple physics due to greater surface area. It looks like you are using a metal hammer, as it appears that your punches are mushroomed on the handle.

Yeah, I use a steel hammer. yes, I have an acrylic mallet, but I don't like it. I was recently recommended a rawhide mallet with lead weight inside? I'll have to try that next. And I can understand the whole "more surface area, needs more force", but from all the other videos I've watched of sinabroks, the claim is that they cut through SO easy, like butter. And that just wasn't close to my experience.

I think I mention in the video that, yeah I'm using a metal hammer because the poly mallets I'd just couldn't get the punches to go all the way through, even with a few hits.

You should buy 1,5mm hole size and 6mm spacing for this pattern. I'm guessing that it's Tony’s pattern?
@jeremyfagergren
@jeremyfagergren Жыл бұрын
This is my pattern. My first attempt. I used Illustrator to create the template, but used the same guides that Tony does (circles to indicate hole punches, 6mm spacing, etc.) Since so many people are used to his guides, I thought it would be easier than trying to reinvent the wheel, ya know?

@@jeremyfagergren So I deduced correctly why your punches do not match the pattern?
@jeremyfagergren
@jeremyfagergren Жыл бұрын
@@jeroo No, I went back and reviewed my Illustrator file, then printed them out and measured from center to center of various holes. It's all set to 6mm spacing. The black punches work perfectly. It's the 8 prong sinabrok that has to be just slightly off.
