I actually sell houseplants for a living and knew I was going to like this video. There is barely a day that goes by that I don't refer to calaltheas and fiddleleaf figs as "divas", and I don't sell a calalthea white fusion to anyone who hasn't tacked several other varieties, first. When someone is buying a gift, I find out how experieinced the person is before making reccommendations, ands unless the plant is a gift for a collector of a genus, I take them straight to our collection of philodendrons since they are all nearly fool-proof. I wan't everyone to have a successful experience. But I was grinning ear to ear thru the entire video.

I know where you are coming from on syngoniums but I have to say, getting a well established syngonium vs. a tiny juvenile one makes a world of difference. A syngonium with large leaves and established root system will not need supplemental humidity and can thrive in any kind of light condition. However, a juvenile syngonium (a lot of the more "rare" syngoniums are often sold in this form) need high humidity or their new leaves will dry up before they unfurl - I have one in my collection that is behaving this way while all the more mature plants puts out a new set of leaves every week. Never keep syngoniums in terracotta - their watering is really simple when you keep them in plastic.

Succulents used to be very difficult to me. As a kid planting mung bean / soy bean is a common homework assignment at school in where I live, we were taught to water the plants EVERYDAY or it will die, unless cactus. So we used to believe plants except cactus need watering every single day. Until I grew up and tried houseplants, my perspective of watering completely changed. Also realized, yikes, the primary school teachers were teaching wrong information.

I actually prefer my Thai over Albo. It’s less fussy and not prone to browning like Albo... my soil mix; rice husk (40%), Leca balls (30%) , soil (30%). I poke my finger through the pot hole before deciding to water it... even when it’s dry at the bottom of the pot, I leave it alone for 2 extra days before watering it through thoroughly. It’s been with me since I got it and still pushing out nee leaves bigger than my face. Good luck for your next one! :)

I've lost count of the times I've left echeveria cuttings in the shed or on the mother plants soil and forgot about them.. I come back a few weeks later and they've always rooted 👀. If you struggle with succulents, get a massive echeveria and propagate the babies. I've definitely propagated over 100 babies successfully in the 2 years I've had her 😍. Lol I still have my first Polly from almost two years ago.I kept it in a terra cotta pot and didn’t water it for two almost three weeks at a time- the wild part is… it didn’t do shit. It didn’t die back. It also didn’t grow. I think the biggest thing about alocasia is that people might keep it too cold. I made that mistake THIS year and it’s leaves died back. I stuck it on a heat mat and it came back no problem. It also never once had spider mites, lol! It’s wild to me how people have issues with them and I’ve never encountered a single problem with any of my alocasia. Same with polka dot plant. Like, I literally throw polka dot plants wherever I need filler and they friggin take over. They are weeds in my house.

I've had a nerve plant for a couple months or so. I've got a bit of plant experience now, but I find this one to be so easy to care for. I make an attempt to keep the soil moist, but I do often neglect it. It dramatically faints if I forget about it, and perks right back up after being thoroughly watered. We'll see how it looks down the line, but so far it's been very forgiving.

I bought two pink polka dot plants this spring. I potted one outside and planted the other one in the ground and placed them next to each other outside in full sun. My potted one became root bound so fast and died and the ground planted one started growing slower initially but is still growing, even though we’re getting into the fall. But our soil here has a LOT of clay in it, so it generally is always somewhat moist below the top layer. If you want to gift someone a polka dot plant, recommend they plant it outside in the ground!

Also i don't get orchids being a fussy plant... my mom has a ton, when i lived at home some of them were in my room which i honestly never watered, and when I did it was just on a whim, and they're all still alive and rebloom consistently, I'm not even confident they're being regularly fertilized. Is it just because people have no patience to wait a few months? We'd always cut off the old stem and a new one grew. They would rebloom twice a year or so.

I do water all my plants regularly everyday and the plants are going bonkers outside . My succulents are thriving but some have taken some damage from the storms we've been having. My fiddle leaf fig is on my front porch in the shade and doing pretty good at the moment. My begonia I've had in the house for a couple of months with its dying leaves I had noticed some new leaves were coming out. I'm quite excited about that. I'm new to the houseplant community since January so I'm still learning. Luckily where I live the humidity works in my favor. I love watching your videos they are so inspiring! Ashley, pls try an air plant again. I have mine sitting right off the side of a grow light. They need light! Plop them in water for about 30min once a week. Put them back in their spots upside down until completely dry. I usually forget and end up turning them right side up the next morning. I mist them when I remember in between waterings and I spray orchid food once a week on them. Three of them are currently little tree ornaments for my Norfolk pine which also needs a lot of light. So it works.

String of pearls has very small roots that don’t go deep. For these reasons, when you water, consider the size of the pot and the probability that only the top 20% of the pot (where the roots are) needs water. If you just water by “topping off” you won’t run into over watering problems

The calathea is looking a little crispy on some of the tips, but it's putting out six new leaves currently :) I've also got quite a few non terrarium begonias that are thriving too! The only plants that I have absolutely murdered on your list here are the succulents and polka dot plant!

My fiddle leaf fig has lived outside my house from day one. Have had it for 4 yrs, it was 3ft tall when I bought it and is now 8.5 ft tall. Water it twice a month ( I am in Texas) and with tap water. I don't clean the leaves, they get cleaned when it rains. And only give it a slow-release fertilizer at the beginning of the season. All my ficus also stay outside during winter. The fiddle leaf fig tree was my first tree as a plant parent.

FLF's are one of those plants that big box stores get in bulk so it's no surprise that they often end up in new plant parent's hands as an already big and reasonably priced plant. Unfortunately no one explains to new plant parent that it's not an easy plant for many to care for. Not to mention, plants automatically go through a transition phase from whereever you buy them to your home, and FLF's are SUPER dramatic with this transition. Just my opinion on them. Can you tell I have been burned by a FLF? LOL

Hey! So begonia tip. The begonia Rexs and Escargots, etc. will tell you when they’re thirsty! They will start to droop. Their leaves will usually point up nice and firm, but the stems will slowly drop as it gets thirsty. I always bottom water until the top of soil is wet, and they usually get thirsty right after their soil completely dries out! Hope this helps. Also you’re so cute! Love your videos 🥰❤️ From your plant mom Jas 🥰🌸

I had my Polly for three years ,yes, they are prone to spider mites; after my first experience with that I've kept any eye out on it. Last year my nephew knock the pot over and a week later my husband knocked it over it lost its leaves. I kept the stump waters it like I normally would. Spring came and I have all new leaves. There very strong plants I give it in direct sun light and keep the soil moist. I will be treating the leaves in about a week.

@@samc2261 Honestly, the market is so variable. Many regions have access to plants that others don't for some reason and availability in that region also plays a role. I was able to find a small on in a 4" pot for about $45 plus shipping but it looked to be made of mid cuttings and it hadn't starting pushing new growth yet 🥴

Feel so lucky my Begonia Highway has been so kind to me in spite of my incompetence 😭 she just keeps putting out more and more lush leaves. I didn’t even put her in a pot with drainage holes and it’s still thriving. Such a fancy looking plant, the silver in its leaves literally sparkles in the light like glittery car paint. I do live in a high humidity country and it’s in the room w my washer/dryer so that prob helps tho

New plant mom here, and I almost killed an elephant bush already. I took out half of it with root and stem growth, seems the other half might be ok. I figured out that they are plants, they have a life span. Also, I don't want any to die, but if they die, they die, and I get another and learn from that.

Hey love. I am a pandemic plant parent, and I have like 4 of the things on your list. I have noticed humidity is key, but I wanted to share that evaporation rate in soil is important to consider, like for my succulents and cactus I do fertilome cactus and water (full soak) every couple weeks. My orchids, I do black gold orchid mix, and they are happy, throwing new leaves...still learning how to get them to bloom, but not death. The Syngonium, and begonias....I do the peroxide water between feedings and it keeps them from molding...I do need to set up a humidifier though. I have some stuff I will mix fertilome ultimate with the cactus so it has moisture retention for a bit but evaporation as well. I have some Aglonema that I did coco-loco from fox farm, and worm castings. Soil can be a really big part if keeping our plant babies alive, and a lot of new plant parents just trust that the plant is in the soil it needs. Always repot, and look up what environment and circumstances your plant would live in its natural habitat. Google lens is also gold for looking up plants cause you can just pop a picture and find the one that best matches your upload

I think orchids are easy peasy. Give good light, water it when the roots are grey or silverfish until they turn green. Drop temp in winter to get it re-bloom. Fitonia too me is an outside annual lol

I agree phaelenopsis orchids are easy. Just follow what Sherry said. Easy peasy. But I do agree a lot of people treat them as throw aways after flower. It’s a shame. Ha ha they do not grow another plant. They are monopodial. But they can grow another spike.

I agree with orchids , I’ve never desired a FLF , They don’t appeal to me. I have a very expensive huge Thai Constellation that got mealybugs, I sprayed with dishsoap and water and didn’t rinse, all the leaves got brown & yellow and died!! I almost died myself!! But thankfully the roots were healthy and I now have 3 gorgeous new leaves. Big and fenestrated. I am proud like a parent of a straight A student!!
