Beating Retreat - there's no "the" in the middle - is a ceremony that originated from the time that the beating of drums heralded the end of the day, calling units back to their castle or encampment.
But over the centuries, Beating Retreat has evolved from its practical military function into a ceremonial event.
What was once used to mark the closing of the camp gates and the lowering of the flags is now an annual event held on Horse Guards Parade in London.

Only the British can showcase the Marching Mass Band. With prompt and precision. Being 58 yrs old, I remember going to the Aldershot Army show and seeing the Military Mass Marching Bands. Makes one proud to be British and proud of the British Armed Forces.

You know very little from the big world obviously. I have never seen a more unprofessional band member than this lady on the big drum. She behaves like in kindergarten and not like a soldier.

A work colleague of mine had served as a musician in the Royal Marines. We referred to him as the first trombone up the beach. Even though I was army, I've always regarded the Royal Marines as the real deal, with their band being second to none.

One sees no reason to change a traditional name, just because some people don't understand what the tradition is. Most bands do their own beating retreat as a Regimental unit. This is to show the United kingdom armed forces in a good light, especially in countries overseas. Have done many beating retreats in my past. They really are special to those whom perform them, and those who witness them too.

I’m curious about the bands I know they don’t go through 36 weeks at CTCRM but do they receive basic training in soldiering at least?😅

they go through phase 1 military training which is 15 weeks and they follow the same training as the rm commandos and then after they finish that they move onto phase 2 music training which can last 2-3 years at the RMSoM

In time of war the musicians are expected to undertake roles such as being a stretcher bearer and you need to be fairly fit to do that. But not to the Olympic standard of the Commandos.

as far as i know they have to receive basic training ....albeit very basic .. in fairness that lady with the drum wasnt going to do much in a firefight ... i would prefer to fight with guys that wont get me killed because they cant climb a wall or a stairs in a a hurry

@@colinobrien3806 That is because they are not infantry. Outside of the band they fulfil support roles. Logistics, Medics, Admin, stretcher bearers, that sort of thing. No need to train them as infantry if they are not fulfilling the role of infantry. Hence why they only receive Basic, and do not go onto the advanced infantry training. It would be the same for troops in other non combat support roles. They do however receive training in their support role as well as musical training for the band.

We follow the example given to us by the Russians at the Alma, Balaclava and Inkerman, when it comes to retreating, champ. D

You British established your own example of retreating down the Malay Peninsula to Singapore where you surrendered to the Japanese in February 1942. Thereafter, you quit the Pacific War for Europe. You British were only present onboard the USS Missouri in September 1945 because you were merely allies with the winners: the United States, China and the Soviet Union.

@@Вивсівідстій the Russians always set us examples to follow, sailing an entire fleet around the world in 1905, to make it more convenient for the Japanese to accept their surrender, and the Russians traditionally retreated for thousands of miles in the face of German Armies, an example we followed in Malaya. Remind me again, how many Russian, as opposed to British warships took part in the Okinawa campaign, and were present at the surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay? D

@@Вивсівідстій I think you would learn, how the British, along with their allies, defeated the Imperial Japanese Army, and drove them out of Burma, , no Russians or Americans involved. I think you will also find, it was the British, that supplied an impoverished Russia with materials, via the Artic Convoys, and battle managed the tank battles, via Bletchley Park,at Kursk, the Russian only resources was the supply of cannon fodder, just the same, as the Russian Federation does today in Ukraine. Slava Ukraine!
