With hundreds of comments, my most popular video on the downside of collecting vinyl records has struck a nerve with people both for and against the hobby. Today, I'm taking a look a some comments, reacting to them, and adding my own two cents. Dig in, chime in, and let me know your thoughts as well!

I started collecting when I was just age 7 and now I'm 73. All along I bought what I liked in 78's, 45's, lp's, even audio cassettes and CD's. I've created my own personal library, where I can pick and choose on a whim. I never loan anything out, for fear of never getting it back or have it returned damaged. Never overspend; just invest in what you'll enjoy.

Yep. I’m the same way. Only others I trust can handle my records! Been working on getting back to a one-in-one-out, or even two-out, when it comes to everything. I only want what I’d be more than happy to pull out and give a spin!

My dad collected vinyl (about 2000 of them) but sadly stopped enjoying them. I picked out a box full of favorites from his collection and graciously accepted some from friends and family members who were ready to part with their vinyl. (I scored some great Velvet Underground and Pixies!) I buy albums that I connect with, artists I want to support, especially at live shows, and I keep a long wish list for those wanting to buy me a gift I'll actually use.

Yeah, there's still viability in vinyl, despite prices and the other things for new collectors to be aware of. I love the format, and will probably never stop collecting the music I love.

The thing those edifiers need is a little box of boom. Nothing too big or expensive, just enough to bring out the lows I recently got one (Jamo 808 or something) and has made a huge difference to my vinyl listening. Sounds gorgeous

I definitely need a sub or something. It’s been an alright system, but I can definitely tell it’s more an equipment deficiency than a format one. Got a few other purchases coming up first - need to get the record room finished first (stay tuned… vid coming when it’s done)!

Keep buying but avoid the gougers and the people that sell unplayable records. There are worse things to do.

I started collecting about maybe 3, 4 years ago. I've bought a turntable, now saving up for speakers and a pre amp. I enjoy the hunt and chase for what I enjoy. It could be going to a lot worse things in my opinion but physical media is just timeless. There's also something to be said about the VC. It is a community, and it's fun to interact with each other, and possibly get turned on to something new. Like for example the Ramones rsd pick up you got.

I agree -- the hunt is great. It can be a bit diluted with online shopping, but even that can be enjoyable. It's been a lot of fun going through the comments of my original video, even the troll-ish ones. Also, I very much agree with what you note about getting turned onto something new! Cheers and thanks for continuing to check out my vids... Also, I haven't found that Joe Pesci album, but I did give a few songs a listen. Super fascinating, and surprisingly good!

Very informative. As a collector, I only buy albums that (much like you) I enjoy listening to from the first track to the last. Because of this, my album collection is holding steady at around 500 LPs. As a reseller, I've found that most yard sales, thrift stores, and Flea Markets lack the more collectible albums that my eBay and Discogs buyers are looking for. Fortunately I have sources that allow me to cherry pick their collections. I pay a bit more per album when doing this but I still make a decent profit in the long run. I have come to the conclusion that true collectors will pay a fair price for an album to add to their collection.

9:38 With some vinyl releases being mixed differently from the digital release, I wonder if loudness may be different on vinyl compaired to streaming. I have a couple of vinyls where the bass in particular feels deeper and more «soft» compaired to when I’m streaming it. Yet not louder. I’ve heard lots about the loudness wars of modern music, but some vinyl records seems smoother and overall «better» mixed than the digital release. If that makes sense. I have a pretty big sound system, with stand alone subwoofer, so the bass goes very low. But on some vinyl records I can have the volume lower, but the bass keeps up and makes a warm and soft sound. Do you have any input here? Love your vids🫶🏼

Great video and we can relate. We’ve never collected vinyl. It’s just our preferred listening format. The difference these days is that you can sample an album through streaming services before buying. We never buy a record unless we will continue listening to it after the fact, not “one and done.” Otherwise you’re throwing your money away. This year(2024), we have nearly stopped buying vinyl. One, I have Parkinson’s and I risk damaging the record and two, CD’s are cheaper and easier to play. Not to mention the quality has far improved over the years and are less expensive.🎧

Sorry to hear about your Parkinsons; I can definitely empathize given a number of friends / their parents have it (or MS, like my wife). It's by far my preferred listening format as well. There can definitely be arguments for and against. I consider myself a collector, but I've scaled back my purchases this year as well, and more have gone out the door than have come in. It’s not the inferior sound of records it’s probably the inferiority of your system. Todays advances in technology make the reissues much better than the original if you want a comparison listen to the QVR of Steely Dan and compare it to the early pressings

Very true. I only really have two duplicates, one an original and the other a reissue. Well, count three if you consider a box set with a demo album and a bonus live album a duplicate.

What is this guy talking about ? I love my vinyl records & will continue to buy vinyl records , thank you very much and I know I can resell them and get most if not all my money back but I plan on passing them on to my kids

What if your kids don't want them? If you have a large collection, it can be a burden for them.

@@memyselfmyvinyl894 I believe I have about 20k vinyl records , , they can resell them if they want but I know music runs in my family
