I have to say, your video was the BEST video in changing the rear shocks on an IS300. You went step by step, detailed every aspect, no chitchat, no ridiculous music in the background. I really like your editing style. And what a wonderful family! You wife watching your children ride their bicycles- now that’s true parenting. Have a truly blessed day!

Oh bro.....you didn't have to go thru all that... I do it the other way around... first I Jack up the lower arm to compress the spring then install that tool and tighten it a little, then remove the Jack. The strut will just fall off. Then replace the shocks, spring compressor still attached.. Secure strut assy on top with the three nuts. Rejack up the lower arm again and install the lower strut bolt and release the tool spring compressor, then remove jack. God bless.

I like the idea. Also sometimes you can find whole strut/spring assemblies for not much more than the strut itself, especially for older models. When you factor in extra tools and your time, you may not be saving much just by replacing the strut. Same thing with CV boots and wheel bearings. Cheaper and easier to replace the whole thing.

@@znogaragego3421 the complete assemblies usually ride poor unless its pure oem lexus( expensive ). An example is I installed KYB complete strut and spring assembles and my ride is very firm. I should have just replaced the strut like Angel did.

I have done this twice back in 2004 with my 2002 is300. 1st time I put the strut compress on the strut spring while on the car. Their is room I remember turning them upside down and they did fit and I also didnot have to remove the caliper. 2nd time I actually got smarter and remove the lower arm which I think is the most easy way to remove the struts. Also you think the rear is a challenge? Believe me try the front struts! Loved my IS300 but too much gas for a small car! So I got a Tacoma! No regrets here! Thank you for all your videos I learn so much!

That was more difficult than I thought. I wonder if it would have been easier to disconnect the lower control arm from the knuckle. Neat trick, to use a box wrench to get more leverage on an Allen wrench. Those spring compressors are spooky, but in your hands it looks straight forward. Thanks for showing how it is done, most of us don't have access to the best tools. Easy to see why most choose quick struts and replace the spring at the same time.

I wish I had your skills but I am not mechanically inclined. But I try though. Great videos you make and I learn all the time. I know you work on the ground a lot. At home depot, they have these wooden benches with wheels and a crank handle that brings them up and down. They have different sizes. I use one for my computer desk. You should get a short one and it may save you in the long run because of your back. Look into it, it's not expensive. God Bless bro!

I've used that same strut compressor many times, on Tundras, Tacoma's, and 4Runners, and it's still a little unnerving. I just keep my body parts away from top and bottom and I use my impact to save a lot of time, just take it slow and do a little on each side. I've done other Lexus's ES, and LS. Great video Thank you.

I remember in my youth helping my dad remove a spring compressor that had slipped and pinned his hand under the compressor and spring. He was downstairs yelling and the way it had slipped i had to add another compressor and compress the opposite side. He was yelling and needless to say I went the wrong direction with the air gun for a second increasing the pressure on his hand. I watched him put about 10 stiches in his own hand after that. Nurse as well. I am more weary than most with these compressors now LOL.. I have the set that compresses both sides at once now with locks. My hands will be going no where. near behind them. I used to do the old just take the nut off technique. which works because we were always putting lowering springs on after and you don't even need compressors for that LOL. We would lay a carpet over them and just hit the nut with a air gun and they would fly off sometimes with a bang. good times. I should do more youtube fixit videos. I get to lazy to film it. haha.

Angel - I'm a big fan, with your feed on my regular list. I really like your approach to production and presentation, your great sense of humor, the inclusion of your family in the videos, your hard work to film multiple simultaneous camera angles to really give us a clear vision of what you're doing and the funny mistakes that you share with us. This time, however, I have to give a negative comment (although I certainly did NOT give you a thumbs down!). Your method of removing the struts was absolutely not the easiest, safest or best way to do that, as was stated by someone else in the comments *(quoted below)* when they listed the much easier way of doing it by jacking by the lower control arm. I have to say I was kind of surprised you did it your way, given how much experience I know you have, but it must be because all of your professional experience comes from working in shops where they have lifts and wall-mounted spring compressors. I would very much like to see you do this using a better method in a subsequent video, giving a link to this video and explaining it was not the best/easiest/safest way to do the job. Maybe even delete this one? Just a thought! Keep up the good work, brother - I still do really appreciate you! :) PS - I work on my ride here in the rust belt of Cape Cod, Massachusetts and you are probably glad you can actually pull parts off cars without struggling too much, but I'm glad I don't have to walk out first thing in the morning to a blinding sun and 90+ degree heat most days! I guess every place has its positive and negative aspects. At 73 I'm just happy I'm still breathing, working and able to fix my ride (with your help). ;-) **(Chuck Kie - Oh bro.....you didn't have to go thru all that... I do it the other way around... first I Jack up the lower arm to compress the spring then install that tool and tighten it a little, then remove the Jack. The strut will just fall off. Then replace the shocks, spring compressor still attached.. Secure strut assy on top with the three nuts. On struts, some chain or nylon winch rope... Raise vehicle under suspension on that specific assembly. This compresses strut spring using weight of vehicle safely. Now use chains and bolts or nylon rope and good knots and remove strut. Install new strut, compress again, remove your chains or whatever and done. Safely.

@@ALINUED The only thing keeping the spring compressor in place is its friction on the spring surface. As the spring is essentially an incline, should that friction end up not being sufficient to hold it, it may slip. While that may basically loosen the spring tension, the compressor also has the potential to move far enough to trap your fingers against the other compressor, or loosen enough to pretty much fall off, leaving only one side of a potentially highly compressed spring under tension. ☠☠ I've *not* seen this happen, but I *have* had spring compressors slip enough to give me some concern and respect for the whole procedure. (the metal fingers on the compressor are also usually cast iron, which is tough stuff and breakage is unlikely, but nothing is guaranteed - not worth taking chances with your hands or your lovely digits - in the words of the immortal Sergeant Phil Esterhaus, "Let's be careful out there!")
