#1 Tip when you are starting an EASY START chainsaw, trimmer or blower. Watch now BEFORE you damage your equipment. Don't break your equipment on the first pull.
Obviously drop starting your chainsaw or weedeater is not the proper or safest technique for starting your saw or trimmer but for those of you out there that still drop start, check out my video to prevent damage to your easy start or secondary spring.
If you're not sure if you have an easy start starter, check out my video and I'll show you how to determine if your small engine equipment has an easy start starter or a regular starter.
This applies to all easy start home and garden equipment from Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo and Shindaiwa.

Learn how to properly fix or repair your own outdoor power equipment if it won’t start, bogs out, won’t rev up, chain or blade is dull and doesn’t cut good, needs sharpened, or simply just runs poorly.
Simple and basic, do it yourself (DIY) tutorials to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment.
I do my best to teach you how I easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like chainsaws, weed eaters, string trimmers, grass trimmers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, brush cutters, leaf blowers, or four stroke, four cycle units like lawn mowers, pressure washers, generators, ride on mowers that need parts installed or replaced, I’m your guy.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many years so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to pass on to you. I want Steve’s Small Engine Saloon to SAVE YOU TIME, FRUSTRATION AND MOST IMPORTANT, MONEY!
If you Google your issue, problem or symptom, you may just see one of my videos pop up! If you have an idea or suggestion for a video, please fill out this form---- www.stevessmallenginesaloon.c...

Thank you for this video. I have a Stihl wacker that I don't drop start, lucky me, but I still am happy to know why I shouldn't. I was still possibly pulling the starter rope to jerky. I have so much equipment, it's hard to keep track of how each piece starts honestly. I am interested in the fact I don't always start my chainsaw on the ground. I drop start it. You have me wondering if I should rethink my saw operation.

I've always thought of drop starting as a bit careless so I've never done it myself. If it's a weedeater I usually put it on the ground, put a foot on it, and yank the starter cord so my shoulder dislocates.

I've been using synthetic fuel from VP Racing to avoid the winter storage problems. However you just might need a carb rebuild to clear out any gummy deposits, that's if you happen to use ethanol blend premium gas. Another way to start the stihl for me and many people I've been told at the stihl dealer is pull without priming the carb or just prime once on a cold start. The factory instructions tend to flood the motor with to much fuel.

Another thing about easy start chainsaws (at least with my Stihl MS251C) is that you don't have to pull the starter cord all the way out to start it. For a cold saw, a gentle half pull or two (with the choke all the way out), followed by another gentle half pull or two (with the choke released) and it starts right up. I'm 68 years old; I need to take care of my rotator cuffs so this saw is a godsend for me. I highly recommend this type of saw for anybody who doesn't want to feel like they have been in a 15 round fight to get their saw started.

Good information, concise and clear. For those who hate the easy start, I remember the chainsaws in 60-70s. They were so hard to pull that they sometimes pulled back more cord than I pulled. They have these compression (?) buttons to push now. So much easier.

I was reading my Stihl trimmer manual and it casually mentions "don't drop start your trimmer". But it goes on to over stuff - they don't tell you what drop starting IS. I figured it was some nonsense about dropping the tool while holding the starter cord. I wanted to see that particular idiocy, so I googled it. There isn't much - but I did eventually find THIS video. Thing is, I learned how to start small engines in 1965, so of course I drop-start everything. (Heck, our mowers and outboards used to have hand-wound starter cords!) Now I know better, and my shoulder thanks you for the lesson, Steve! (Stihl really needs to rewrite their manuals....)

Thanks, Steve! You explained Drop Starting, the Easy Start system, and why you don't use the former to start the latter! You are my favorite Small Engine Mechanic. You break it down where most folks can get it, you make it fun, and never boring. Thanks again!

I’ve been drop starting stuff for 50 years, knew it was not recommended but always found it now. So now I have a FS56C easy start trimmer. Did not know, uh read, the proper way to use easy start, just thought it was marketing. So went out to the garage after watching this video, it really is easy start lol. No more drop starts, well not for this trimmer anyway lol. Your channel is great Steve, discovered recently so lots of catch up to do. Thanks for the complete yet simple explanations. 👍

Good advice Steve, I always start mine while on the ground more from habit than anything else. I wasn't given this advice when I brought it from my local dealer, I would hope they just forgot to tell me rather than waiting for me to bring it back in for repair with a broken easy start spring.

Thank you so much Steve. For me, this was your most important video. I just purchased a Stihl MS 462-MC chainsaw. And luckily I’ve only started it one time. It’s so powerful I waited to get safety equipment before I started using this saw. I’m used to a little small Husavarna homeowner model. God bless you and have a happy new year. John

I just got a new offbrand chainsaw, and I didn't even know what easy start was. I kept wondering what that weird springy feeling was. I thought there was something wrong with the saw. But then I figured it out, that it just kind of wound up and then released and turned the engine over, and then I thought to myself, they did that on purpose! I thought that's pretty cool! It starts pretty easy that way! Thanks for telling me what I was dealing with there.
