I’ve had every single route lately start backwards; that’s what happened here. I’ve had to hit ‘reverse’ twice to make it function properly. Thanks, Niantic.

2:05 It's not glitched, the red flag above the pokestop indicates the end of the route (as shown at 2:15) and when you quit and started again, it was on reverse direction so it finally started counting ^^

It is glitched in a way, that it doesn't recognise where you're starting and if you noticed you gave the red flag instead of the blue one you have to reverse the route a few times before it'll take :(

@@mgroot Yeah, routes are full of glitches but at 0:53 the ingame map shows the beggining of the route but Nick walked to the end of it. Now, I don't know what the "true" start of the route is supposed to be, but Niantic should decide it based on the closest pokestop from your current position. Just another good idea with bad implementation by Niantic

@@notDemiurgo Yeah, I've tried starting a route from a stop and for whatever reason it made the starting point at the end of where I wanted to start. I made sure to check the arrows on the route before starting them after that happened...

yeah I have noticed it has been reversing the routes when before it didn't do that so you have hit reverse direction like 2-3 times until it changes to start spot you are at. Its so annoying. You just have to be paying attention before you start the route.

I've noticed Mateo doesn't spawn at the end sometimes but all you have to do is click the stop and he will appear

He only appears on the first route of the day that you start. If you cancel it before meeting him, you're out of luck.

@@shinkennethThat's not true. It's not guaranteed that he will spawn. It even said in the thing we could read about him when this feature was new. You "MAY" encounter this new NPC. I did 3 the order day and he spawned on my 3rd route.

The first route you started was in the wrong direction. It's always worth checking your start point (blue flag) is in the correct place and the arrows are routing the way you expect before proceeding with the route. If not, just hit Reverse until it's correct (sometimes needs more than 1 press weirdly!)

I noticed that routes I had previously always loaded that were one direction by default, started loading the other direction by default. Very weird.

@7:15 - is it Nick's fault? - unfortunately, yes it is as he learns it's weird behaviour. However, the routes "feature" (use the term loosely) still has lots of problems.

Not sure about the first route thing; Niantic specified in the press release and on twitter when people asked them that Mateo, like Zygarde cells, only has *a chance* of showing up (so you can be unlucky like me and do multiple routes on a day and see neither...still rather bitter about that one). Also, one time he was invisible for me; I saw him, he disappeared, and tapping the area next to the Stop caused me to interact with him.

I don't like doing routes because I don't like being told which path to follow, but on top of that, it has already happened to me a couple of times that when I decide to do it, it doesn't work.

It's because your first attempt you had the travel going the other way. You should have reversed direction. You had the end of the route at your beginning.

Really enjoying these videos. Yep routes are a pain sometimes, doesn’t track or it goes the wrong way and have to press reverse twice (used to know which way you were going).

Hey Nick, so as i have done a lot of routes i will let you know exactly what happened! Basically a previously route is saved in the direction you did the last time, so when you said that you have already done the same route in reverse, it showed the starting point same as last starting point! I know its frustrating but make sure to check the red and blue flags as blue is starting and red in ending point! If shown red at starting, there is a button before starting a route to reverse the direction! Hope this helps! And love your new goal to be more productive this December!

Does not save how you last ran route. I run them the same way each time, and each time I have to change directions. Also, I created them, and they always start the opposite way I originally created. Worked fine for a while, but now they're all backwards.

The route started backwards, so you were at the end of the route when it was not tracking your distance. This has been an issue I’ve noticed a bit lately, where the end of the route is the start and you have to reverse twice to get it to correct.

The one time Mateo failed to show himself I did the old trick to force a Zygarde cell and he showed up. Basically without stopping the route, wait at the very end and force close the game. When you start it back up he should be there. Seems like in your circumstance it had to do with the first route you started being backwards, which is another wonderful glitch.

I've ran some routes, which was the first route of the day for me and he didn't show up or he would pop up and would disappear before I could interact with him.

I have noticed it has been reversing the routes so you have hit reverse direction like 2-3 times until it changes to start spot you are at. it decides the stop you're closest to should be the end of the route. and the point furthest away the start point(as shown at 2:15) also at 7:30 just walk to the actual start point because you were at the end point (as shown at 2:15)

With routes it's important to check which direction you've chosen, as the red indicates the endpoint Edit: also on route, check the gym/stop before you finish the route for Mateo, in case he doesn't pop up without it

Yup. The routes start backwards now so reverse direction and reverse it again. I’ve had this exact thing happen where I canceled the route. It’s the only time Mateo didn’t show. Also, always spin the stop at the end end of the route. I’ve had him pop up like a rocket grunt that way.

2:08 Nick! He's glitched specifically when the route ends at a gym (I know from personal experience as the only routes I have end with those) you have to click on the gym and he will pop up! Not sure when this will be fixed, but try it next time. ❤

I've had the same issue, routes have been buggy for me and will only start in one direction so when I've had to quit to restart it or something, then there's no Mateo or Zygarde cell ;/ I thought it was just happening to my game, but now I've seen that it's a bug...

Same thing happened to me when I was doing a route for Mateo the first day. I use my daily incense and realized the route was backwards for some reason and I decided to just use my daily and walk to the "start point" and ended up doing the route in reverse when I had it set to not do it in reverse.

I have heard that when the final stop on the route is a gym, you have to click on the gym to get Mateo to appear. I've just been making sure to choose routes where the final stop is a regular pokestop and not a gym.

Had the same thing happen to me the other day as the route I was on was glitched. You had to select reverse direction from both ends... So, when I quit out, it counted that for me too.

I've learned Mateo will ONLY spawn on the first one. If you cancel the route you cancel Mateo for the day.

I've also had a glitch that I was on a route, in a party, I did the force close thing to get the zygarde cell. Cell didn't pop up but it also threw away my daily incense before I used it. I believe if you have the incense already active, it'll still be going. So yeah, all these things still don't work together

I got no Mateo when I did 3 routes on Saturday. He appeared and disappeared for just a moment on the map toward the end of the first route, and didn't appear again that day. 😩

This is exactly why i still haven't done a route, nor do i intend to anytime soon. Niantic doing what Niantic does best - screw shit up. I really wish they would get it right. I don't like having unfinished research.

Try clicking on the gym or stop sometimes he doesn't pop on the map but if you click the end point (not complete route) he may pop up I noticed when I didn't see him and the end point was a gym

why even make the players set the start and end manually if you can switch it around anyway? just always declare the player's first activated stop as start and done

It automatically reverses the route direction if you start it while you are near the end but you have to reverse direction twice to actually get it in reverse. Mateo isn't a guaranteed spawn on every route, he only shows up like 2/3 routes or so.

Your first route wasn’t glitched, you were in reverse. It’s true that the feature was terrible at launch, but since more than a month, I’ve had no problems with it and I do at least 5 routes and sometimes 8 every day

Route direction is currently buggy. Open it and hit reverse route and sometimes it doesn’t change. I now hit reverse route until I see it change AND the start point is the one I expect - then start the route.

Not that you answer to me....but why exactly do you have so many open? Always been looking to ask that, wondered why you have so many open. Clearly you made progress on many of them, Tokyo and NYC I understand...but the others have almost just easy stuff. Is this a defiant stance to special research? Curious is all

There are definite glitches, seems that I select the start point and it switches to end point which is really annoying. Then I did 3 routes and Mateo never showed up.

yep i fell for this glitch. did the exact same thing and started my route in reverse canceled it and restarted. had to wait till the next day to do mateo again and then when i did the dude was playing hide and seek when i was at the last 100 meters.

The reverse direction is “sticky”, I noticed. Play close attention to which direction the route is going because your location might be at the end of the route that was created

From my experience, Mateo has always been on the first route of the day I do. He doesn't always visually appear next to the gym/stop but I can tap on it once I've walked around 60% of the route and the cutscene will trigger. If I end the route early (first route of the day) without interacting with Mateo, I never see him for the rest of the day. Just a buggy feature all round.

Niantic and their bugs is one of many issues I’ve been having lately with Pokémon Go. My account got hacked and banned and they refuse to help me as a result. It sucks. Glad you were able to successfully complete a research still though today! Excited to see the actual ending of the other one!

Had the same problem with the route not registering after I started it. Restarted the game without quitting the route and it worked and registered any progress I made also.

In regards to route: glitch exists you have to ensure the arrow is going the right way. In regards to Mateo he does not always appear click the stop where the route ends and he will always show up AT THE STOP

You have to check if the route is really on the way it's supposed to be, sometimes it shows the orange flag at the start of the route. If that happens, flip the way of the route a couple of times to get it right

SO i had the route starting the opposite way happen to me a few times. After I quit it, i pressed the reverse route a couple times to make sure I got the direction I wanted. But I also think quitting that first wrong direction route may have ruined my Mateo encounter for the day. Kinda sucks...

Thanks for the heads up about canceling that first route! Just a note, I've had to reload up to 4 times to get Mateo. But, yes, routes are totally messed up. Oh, and, a TAIL(?) is not a CAT. Still don't quite believe you, want proof - show us the CAT already.

if the end of a route is a gym, matteo doesn't visually appear, you tap the gym as if you;re going to spin it and he interrupts like a grunt does at pokestops

I saw you about to quit the route and was shouting "Nooooooooooooo" The glitch is that it should automatically see which Pokestop you're wanting to start from, but it doesn't always do that

well, guess I've been having the same problem, but basically starting a route that was in reverse and having to stop it to reverse it and start again. Tonight darn it, I WILL get my 2nd of 3 Mateo interactions.

I did a route on Friday, the first of the day, and Mateo didn't appear at the end. So it's not guaranteed that Mateo will turn up at the end of the first route of the day. What they have said is that Mateo will turn up once (not twice) a day. You only have been lucky that you have encountered him at your first route each day.

You cancelled the route, so you cancelled your daily Mataeo encounter. It sucks I know, happened to me on Day #1. Also you have to select the route direction now, as they changed it from Auto detect direction to Toggle.

I’ve tried to walk routes for the past three days and can’t get the route to work right. When routes first came out, I didn’t have any issues, but now the route will start and then drop off or when I reverse the route, it doesn’t work-it’s so frustrating. Those of us who want to try the route are just done with it. It’s not worth our time.

If that happenes Matteo is still there he’s just invisible click on the end poke stop at any point along the route to interact with him.

If you notice the route isn’t counting, check to make sure it’s going in the right direction. Your first route was accurate, but it was backwards.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the reason that Mateo does not appear on you first route of the day because: - you didn't get any gifts from pokestops when walking the route. If you're holding the max number of gifts, spinning pokestops won't give you a gift, meaning you have no "gifts from routes to train with Mateo"

I always have glitches starting a route where it doesnt want to reverse route correctly when i start the route. And i have to quit and restart route correctly. So this is why i havent seen matteo...

Fir the hiker just touch the finish stop and he should pop up. He dont pop up for me but if I touch gym he pops up🤷🏾‍♂️

if mateao does not spawn when you get to the end of the route click the pokestop at the end and he will spawn

Another advice is when you get to a gym as your last stop he won’t spawn till you tap on the gym

When the routes came to the game and when they expanded the availability of the routes for the first time. There was these two overlapping routes that I liked to do, because that way you could get cell from the return trip as well. But like your route here, one of the routes is bugged and is only available when you are far enough from it, basically forcing you to do it only in reverse. If you get into the starting point, the route vanishes even though two other routes in the same stop are visible. It has been like that for like the past month and a half at least.
