Sports car shoppers know that bargains are often fraught with troubleshooting challenges. Join our daughter and father team of Riley and Dane as they evaluate the fuel system on a 1992 Chevrolet Corvette. The fourth-gen is referred to as a C4 and the body style extended from 1983 through 1996. With 30-plus years having its way with this example, time has not been kind to this two-seater.
While Riley’s aiming for spirited performance, Dane’s focus is to make sure the car is safe and reliable. How about those tires? The Optispark ignition system? Plus, what’s the impact of ethanol fuels that have passed through the in-tank pump and the submersed rubber fuel lines.
Knowledge gained here will help you find your bargain buy without the anxiety of lacking tips to make repairs.
Hemmings is the ultimate destination for finding your perfect ride. Head to Hemmings.com to register and start your search today or download our Hemmings marketplace app for Apple and Android devices.

Right off the bat, I love the father/daughter connection. Great idea to balance the joy and the safety here. I'm not a car guy at all, so just hearing the Lincoln test is helpful. haha. I've owned cars for almost 30 years, and I didn't know that. They also do a great job of leading into the next item by gearing up for the interior. This is fun!

C4s are the ish!!!! Absolutely love them!!! The later 92-96 are legit sports cars!!! Dude the optispark thing is really getting super old!!! The optispark is a very reliable part!!! And usually only go out because of a bad waterpump!!! So its pretty obvious what that means!!! It means the optispark is MORE reliable than the waterpump!!! And waterpumps don't go out very often!!! But the aftermarket is full of garbage units!!! In 2024 only one good aftermarket optispark exist!! Petris enterprise!! Buy anything else and you'll be doing the job again in the very near future!!! STAY AWAY FROM GARBAGE AFTERMARKET UNITS AND YOU'LL BE JUST FINE!!!

I laugh when someone says negative things about the C4 Corvette, comparing it to today’s cars isn’t really a fair comparison. An 89 Corvette is 35 years old but I wouldn't try to compare it to a 1954 which is 35 years older. Likewise, I wouldn't compare a 1954 to a 1919 which is also 35 years older. Point is, a lot changes in 35 years, thus people aren't making realistic comparisons. They definitely are not appreciating the C4 Corvette for the cutting edge technology developed for it which definitely saved the Corvette & lead the way to today's Corvettes. The C4 Corvette with the Tune Port Injection was so dominant over the competition (Porsche, BMW, Lotus, etc) that it was kicked out of showroom stock road racing in the SCCA because of the manufacturers complaining & threatening to pull out of racing. This lead to the “Corvette Challenge” road racing series in 1988 & 89, and only C4 Corvettes raced in it. If one looks at the C4 history, ground breaking technology & accomplishments it real is an amazing story. Personally, I still find the tune port injection intake system to be one of the coolest looking engines & ranks up next to the look of a 1932 Ford Hot Rod with a Flathead & a 3-2 barrel carb intake. The TPI’s instant torque with the 6 speed manual transmission is a true gem in a world void of manual transmissions & full of nanny controls.
