Everyone gets the feeling that they should be going to college straight out of high school. I'm here to explain why that may be detrimental (with a few exceptions).

Just a reminder that this isn't me saying you CAN'T go to college. But hardly anyone talks about just how much college costs and everyone is just convinced by others (usually teachers) that going to college is just what you do and that it's the next step. You'll have to forgive me if I'm a bit tired of seeing people fresh out of high school get blindsided by "Woah wait this costs a lot!" because no one bothered to tell them the most important part about going to college. (Also yes I use "college" as a catchall for both college and university because at least in the US most people know what you're talking about)

Honestly, if college was tuition-free and paid for by the public via taxing the rich out of existence, a lot of the problems you discussed in this video would be resolved.

Another tip from someone doing college now: start with community college and apply for financial aid. The Pell grant alone (this is the one everyone gets) should be able to pay for every semester and then some. This should give you enough time to decide if you should keep doing this and transfer to get a bachlors or just get your associates with no debt

To add on top of it all, colleges don’t know what the heck they’re doing, especially depending on the field you’re going into these days. Getting a business or marketing degree has less to do with what you learn in college, and more about what you learn in practice. I literally got a DM the other day from a college professor asking me how I do what I do, and if I could talk to her class about how marketing and the process of growing on social media works. It’s literally crazy. Save your money, learn your trade to the best of your ability by using online resources, and depending on how that goes, reevaluate your next steps. Doesn’t hurt to at least try.

But I feel like if I never had KZfaq, I would be going, getting tens of thousands into debt and would’ve been in such trouble for the rest of my life. I will say to anyone here: FINISH HIGH SCHOOL THOUGH. You will screw yourself if you don’t. But you don’t need college. Trade school is a great alternative

In my opinion, networking is the only legitimate upside college has over self-taught learning. Don’t get me wrong, it certainly is possible to network without needing to go to college, but one could argue it’s so much easier to do it in college than by your own, because of being directly around others in the same environment. Whether or not networking is worth the price of admission is completely up to the individual. Another point I’d like to bring up is this: there are still lots of jobs, not just related to STEM-L that require *any* bachelor’s degree, even if it isn’t related to the job itself. Once employers stop placing generic degrees into their job requirements and, as an alternative, instead focus on relevant certifications, more people may consider if college really is worth it.

I was in a community college and I qualified for financial aid due to a learning disability I have, I then figured out some subjects would be made deliberately more difficult towards me because of that, I basically just quit college after the third semester, mainly because after the second semester I lost financial aid. I guess it also doesn't help high School really does not prepare a lot of kids for the type of work in certain colleges. High school math, compared to college math is like night and day. Plus the instructors at the college had a very standoffish attitude like they didn't want to be there or help anyone, making people too uncomfortable to ask for help.

I have been to college from August 2019 through May 2020, or April? It was going okay, but it wasn’t working out, so I had to wait a year to do filming school to be a cinematographer. College is for the people who know what they wanna do in life, but it’s stupid that we HAVE to do the basics classes we’ve done from middle and high school. Too bad the money is SOOOOO stupid expensive… College isn’t for everybody, folks. I went cuz I thought the thing I wanted to do in life was gonna work. It was working out the first 2 months, but it wasn’t working out after the first semester. I only enjoyed doing photography during the 2nd semester, but after the start of the pandemic, I just finished the 2nd semester and that’s all. Also online classes and Zoom is STUPID and colleges should be free or be cheap

I’ll probably just start at community college within the next year or so, but depending on how well my programming and other skills are going, then I’ll probably skip a university after. Thankfully if you get a job with tuition reimbursements, then student loans shouldn’t be an issue. That’s what I’m trying to find is a job that offers those and even scholarships.

I attended college back in 2013-2016. Now this is not a hate speech as I funny enough preferred college than school when I was a pupil/student. Back when I attended college it was free, there was no need for any student to pay to attend college but as in today's times now you do have to pay to attend college if you're over 18 but some colleges say that you have to be at least 15 to attend which I know that's incredibly young but that's how old you have to be at least in my local college as I attended college when I was 16. The first couple of years when I attended college were fantastic until I reached my third year which was when I noticed college wasn't exactly for me especially when it reached the stage where I felt that there were some favouritism among students and how some of the students were allowed to add in scenes to their final major project but I was told that I couldn't add it in for example using certain profanity (I was studying media back when I was in college) which in my case were not that bad of profanities for example (damn, hell, ass, screw, son of a bitch) which those are minor bad words and my tutor wanted me to make it PG-13 as he saw those words are used in 15 rated films which that's basically an R rated movie which I thought was BS and the tutor allowed other students to use a middle finger gesture which in my opinion is far worse than what I was going for and I had to pay real money to print off scripts in college for when I was studying media and I went through 12 rewrites and lost a lot of money when doing the printing off the scripts. I know some people may ask how is this relavent to what Dab was talking about. What I was basically saying is when it came to Dab saying that just because you got a degree doesn't mean you're an automatic shoe in for your job choice which is what ended up happening to me as I dropped out of college at 19 because it was just going no where for me even though I did pass on Level 2 Media as well as getting the highest mark in Level 1 media. Luckily I do have a much better job as of today's times. College can be good but at the same time I do suggest that for those who are interested in enrolling in a college, take a very good hard look at the college and see whether they are trustworthy, does the college hold on to their words? (In other words, are they the man of their word? Or they just saying it just to get more students but not teach them anything), is it worth the money instead of ripping people off and making them pay ridiculous money for nothing. Nowadays I prefer being self taught as I find it as the easiest way possible.

I’ll respect anyone who disagrees, but when he talked about money... this is exactly why we need tuition free college. We need to actually take on the people who are extorting 18 YEAR OLDS into crushing debt that they’ll likely never be able to pay back. Primary, secondary, and higher education are a *basic human right* and we have predatory corporateheads treating it as an investment opportunity. And I’d recommend watching Gravel Institute’s video on why college is so expensive in the US.

College is a scam if you don't want to become a doctor, a lawyer, or any high-profession careers that require actual credentials. Why would I need a film degree when I can learn how to film and edit by watching 5-minute videos that can easily teach me how to open Premiere Pro. Also, considering some people don't ever use their degrees...you'll basically go into debt for nothing.

I've seen plenty of people say that their degree will help them, and then wind up with a minimum wage job. Also, as I said in the video, it's increasingly becoming the case where employers look for certifications or on the job experience/previous job experience more than having a degree of any type. STEM-L is always the best bet in this case if a degree seems needed, but even then that's no guarantee of anything. I'd feel awful seeing someone burn through tens of thousands of dollars and end up working minimum wage.
