I would never go on holiday to Dubai/UAE (I find it an utterly bizarre place, and I am wholly against their anti-LGBTQ+ views and laws, even aside from their support of genocides like in Sudan) … but to my shame, I did fly Emirates to Thailand back in 2016, and had a couple of hours layover in Dubai (and I felt uncomfortable about it even then, though primarily for the LGBTQ+ dissonance). I’m grateful to Novara for providing a platform for these protesters and raising the profile of this war. One of the interviewees mentioned Tigray, and I’m reminded of the excellent coverage by Channel 4 News on the war in Tigray; they’ve also had at least two correspondents [ordinarily based in the UK] go to Sudan during the recent conflict, plus also reporting done by their “Africa correspondent” (because one person can cover a whole continent! 😂) Jamal Osman. I am at least glad that it’s being covered to some degree by the mainstream media (though I don’t know how common that is, because I pretty much only watch Ch4 News on a daily basis, with the addition of some Al Jazeera and Sky News on KZfaq!… plus Novara of course, which should go without saying here 😊)

You can't avoid the UAE because you are likely to have filled your car up with their gas this morning and thus are funding this war as well. Even if if you walk or bike everywhere, the other products that you use daily are probably made in a factory that is powered by an oil byproduct of the UAE or shipped to you by a vehicle powered by an oil byproduct of the UAE. Even if you drive electric vehicles, it is likely that somewhere in the mix your power grid isn't green, and even if your power grid is "green" the windmills and solar panels are probably manufactured in a factory that is powered by an oil byproduct of the UAE and if the factory isn't powered by an oil byproduct of the UAE then the low-income workers of that factory probably drive gas cars powered by an oil byproduct of the UAE. I am from Sudan and I live in the UAE, the people here are very respectful and it's a very safe country, The only reason people are protesting in this video against UAE is because Sudan is an Islamist nation, the only thing UAE did was sell weopons to the army for gold, which is still awful, but compared to what the army did to the civillians for the last 35 years it's nothing... Trust me if Sudan wasn't an Islamic nation these people wouldn't give a single fuck

To be fair, these movements are not new to the West. They are growing at an unprecedented rate, though, and getting more media attention now that a critical mass of people have gotten actively involved. The growing numbers are due to a variety of reasons, most importantly the rise of social media. Another reason I don't see talked about much is the fact that most Western countries are becoming much more racially/ethnically diverse with each generation. In settler-colonial countries like the US and Canada, Indigenous people have more of a voice than ever before. Immigrants and children of immigrants from colonized and post-colonial countries have also brought different perspectives on history as well as current events. Their presence alone has helped humanize the rest of the world in the eyes of some Westerners, especially whites. This has made them less susceptible to propaganda about the Global South. It's harder to dehumanize people on the other side of the world when their relatives live across the street from you, you know?
