All about the Remove Tool in Photoshop, AKA the Sparkly Tool - and no I will never stop giving these tools ‘Jess names’. Photoshops Remove Tool is amazing and will work absolute wonders for getting rid of dog eye bogeys, unwanted hairs, pieces of dust, and leash removal when working on editing your images.
However, there is one HUGE downside to this fabulous tool, which I'll go through in detail in this video and show you exactly how to fix it to make your images seamless.

In situations where the ‘Sparkle Tool’ does not deliver acceptable results and Content-aware Fill neither, I usually do the deletions via “Generative Fill” because I have come to like the three options it offers.

Problem with that is that generative fill only produces low resolution output, which is as obvious as the patterning of the remove tool, unless you do your work in very small tiles or you're using a very low resolution camera. And too, apart from the pattern generation in place of noise issue, the remove tool usually does a better job than gen fill for removal. With the files out of my R5, the gen fill tool output looks awful.

I don’t use generative tools at the moment, so this would not be an option I would take. Maybe one day this will change, but at the moment I’d rather the replacement pixels come from my own image rather than the ether of firefly. Glad you have a workflow that works for you though!

I really appreciate these bite-sized video 'snack' tutorials that are easy to consume and quickly incorporated into the own workflow with the new features in Photoshop. Cool. What I do in my workflow is I create a new blank layer above and use the 'sparkly tool' to edit onto that, therefore if goes a bit wrong I've got it on its own layer and is not distructive on the original layer.

Great video Jess. I haven't been using it for removals because of the fingerprint and healing brush not working but didn't think to use the clone stamp! Will give that a go but still find your line removal process works better than most PS source thingies haha!

Omg, I literally stopped using it for that exact reason. I thought I was going mad and you're absolutely right now the remove tool doesn't work properly anymore. 😞I really want to go back to an older version that didn't have this as it's so frustrating. 😭

Sparkly tool: Bugger; never going to get that out of my head now. In any case, the sparkly tool gives substantially better results if you do all your noise reduction first, since the 'fingerprint' is its inability to model randomized noise, and it just makes patterned texture instead.

For sure! Though it can still crop up in other situations too, for example, fabrics with high detail, so it’s worth having a triple check to make sure 🤓

You might see it performs better if you apply noise program like topaz on noisy inages first before using the remove tool and you likely won't see this artefact.

AI generated pixels are banned for most competitions. I don’t retouch with generative ai at the moment, everything is created via the pixels in the image only.

Because of the fingerprint I started cheating on the "Sparkly Tool" with the lasso tool and generative fill. I think remove tool is mostly good with the small stuff (though I always have cmd z at the ready for when it makes "bad life choices"), but I've always had issues with the leads and generative fill does a better job, at least for my purposes
