I go for thematic armies, both in 40k, WHFB and now AoS and I've only won 1 battle in my 21 years of playing. But honestly, from an RP perspective it's hilarious and just fun. How else could my Empire General be nicknamed "Stumpy"? I built my army around a central theme, got it as close to lore as possible (a Hochlander rifle regiment with Nuln artillery detachment) and just went to war. Then converted my General to the point where he ended up with two peglegs, a hook for a hand and an eyepatch by the end of a campaign :P Honestly whenever I see Warhammer on Social Media it's all about "does this list look good?" "Which unit should I take, I like X but have heard Y do it better", basically just a ton of min maxing and I'm just there like.. Are you guys actually having fun? Because it doesn't really sound like it lol Don't get me wrong, if that's your thing then awesome, you are getting something out of the hobby.. but at the end of the day I just get this feeling that people talk about stats and winning strategies so much that it sometimes feels like they're overlooking the themes and the factions and even minis to the point where you could just give them an excel sheet with just numbers and they'd be fine lol I dunno, all I know is that if I focused on winning to the point where I see some people do, It would just get boring very fast. Because at that point it really is just a numbers game. But you do you everybody :)

I love the resolutions that say "Finish my ten-year backlog of miniatures." 😄 I just got back into 40k after 30 years (haven't played since high school). Picked up the Command Edition starter box last summer. Then got excited about Kill Team when Octarius came out, so got that too. Love Orks, so got a Combat Patrol of Orks. Then Battleforce boxes came out at Christmas...got three of those to add to my Space Marines, Necrons, and Orks... uh oh. I may have a problem. 😲 Was feeling overwhelmed for a while, so I've decided to start with the starter box forces, beginning with the Necron warriors. I'd like to get the starter box finished so I can play some small games with my friends (who are interested to play, but don't want to paint). Then I'll tackle the Octarius box so we can start playing that too. Then I can chip away at the other boxes, adding forces a squad at a time. Also I resolve to get my own KZfaq channel up and running!

That's a great message. I play Imperial Fists, which are the lowest of the low for Space Marine Chapters at tournaments. You see them down at the bottom next to the other worst performing armies. But you know what? I love them, they look great, they're by far the best looking army that I've ever painted, and I have fun with them. What's more, I do still win games. I probably win over 50%, because like you said I don't have to beat the top tier tournament lists, I just have to beat my buddies.

I listened to the first three Horus Heresy audiobooks over and over (and still do). Even after I finally locked in the sequence of events, I kept playing them through. I found that once I was familiar with the who and the where etc, I started to notice other details and elements of the story telling. There is so much going on and Toby Longworth does such a good job with the pace by bringing gravity to each sentence and of portraying these Demi-Gods with such gravitas ✨

Your opinion on tournaments is 100% my own. Me and my friends love to play competitively in our own sense. That means playing a diverse list that could actually resemble a slightly more real army compared to like, 100 of 1 unit and a commander. We focus more on tactics and strategy rather than the meta and cheesing our fights.

I feel you're somewhat right about the tournaments and strength of armies, as yes a code is often carried by just a few strong units spammed in a specific faction. But some armies are legitimately really bad across the board right now without doing weird combos like chaos marines, who struggle to pull any wins ever against my friend group's 9th edition books, similar for guard as well. A lot of the older books from 8th have been left high and dry with overcosted stuff for their whole army so they end up fielding less numerous and less powerful units which can make even casual games unfun to balance. Also in regard to new games I've personally been looking at dropfleet commander recently so figured I'd suggest maybe taking a look over there however unlikely it is to happen. It has really cool spaceship models and I'm expecting a box set to arrive soon that I'm excited to try painting up

The meta used to be about how people played for fun, but now its about min-maxing based on tournament stats. I hope we can return to a fun space again, at least as a community. Tourneys are cool, but social media keeps elevating the worst parts of everything.

Tournaments are still a useful tool to see what models are tuned too well. Balances changes are nice when they address "problematic" models. Playing "bad" armies is tight, its a serious flex when an obvious underdog defeats a run-away-silly powerful uncontested champion.

Love this! One of my biggest issues with the tournament meta focus is that often those looking at the results only show you the list, not how it was actually played on the tabletop. I can take that list and play against my friends, but that doesn't mean I'll actually win based on that alone. More often than not it takes me 3 or 4 games before I start to see how a list actually works on the tabletop for me. While I think tournaments are interesting, and the analysis of them, I think some folks are too laser focused on that instead of just having fun playing the game.

The new Ork Boyz have generated a lot of criticism for the monopose sculpting and mixed weapon loadout. They might work for a fun Greenskins Killteam. Goals for the year: Finish my firstborn Space Wolves and Blood Angels, Start my Primaris Space Wolves and Blood Angels, Paint my Ork Kommando Killteam and the Octarius terrain, paint the Chalnath terrain, play some 40k and Killteam.

I play with my gf every now and then. She likes Death Guard I play with Ultramarines I also like the aspect of collecting and assembling. I like painting and the results of it but it's not my favorite part, assembling is just so relaxing.

I've never been to a single tournament in over 20 years in this hobby. But for some reason I'm adamant about being able to field armies that are 100% legal and wysiwyg. Why is that???

Goals for this year. Finish 2000 points of my 7000+ point necron army, finish my custom salamander army builds and paint a 500 point army, and flesh out my paint scheme for my future tau army. I’m still pretty new. Started on the lore in October, building and painting in November, and played kill team in December. My goals this year are to finally play 40K and stick to a World Eaters focused chaos soup. It was kinda hard for me to decide on a faction for a while so I’m glad I got into kill team first.

I feel like the massive influx of new people to the hobby really reflects on how the tournament results are interpreted. Not gonna lie, as a newbie looking to start my first army the first thing I did was google things like "best 40k army" and tournament results were definitely on my radar. Thankfully I didn't make a decision based on that info and followed the community's advice: Play what you think is cool/fun, don't chase the "meta".

My first tabletop game was necromunda in the late 90's. I am just now getting back into the desire for it and have been looking at mantic games warpath, in particular their new firefight. I have pre-ordered the starter set and look forward to playing a few games.

I want to finish building the Red Harvest Warcry box. I'm going to try and fully paint and play at least one game of it this year.

GW themselves have shifted the focus towards tournaments by having the rule set as Grand Tournament etc and taking on the style of ITC. Playing a top meta list is still difficult if you have an army without a codex, but yeah you can win with those and sometimes it’s more fun to play as the underdog.

For 2022 I'm hoping to finish my (necromunda) Squat Miner gang, along with a Coronus Grav-carrier part (one of the engine blocks from the side) converted into a fitting squat hover van. Also hoping to complete my iron claw/Bob Olley squat collection this year. Next I wanted to build a 'pulpitek' for my Redemptionist gang, and find a metal Klovis the Redeemer (and Malakev). If i find more time maybe paint some Blackstone Fortress stuff. Breaking up the whole space dwarf force in smaller projects, as it has gotten a bit out of hand. With over 200 metal citadel and iron claw miniatures, and probably double in kitbashes and conversions forming multiple armies.

THANK YOU for stating the glaringly obvious thing that most youtubers will not, and do not, state: not everyone is a good/competent player and that tournament gamers are, well, (to be polite) tournament gamers! Unfortunately tournament gamers have a disproportionate influence on rules development and changes due to their being the most prone to exploit rules (as with the examples you gave), with the less-skilled tournament gamers being the ones that whine the most when beaten by it. As result, things are changed and, the unwashed hordes being what they are, think every utterance from GW is law and must be included/followed, thereby having a cascade effect throught the masses. It is unfortunate that, when the GW-lemmings leave the ship, they bring their bring their (plague-like) bad habits with them and contaminate other decent games systems and genres (Flames of War, Kings of War, various Osprey and Warlord titles, as examples); not realizing that very behavior is what caused them to dislike/leave GW in the first place. (Mind you, AoS did contribute greatly to the influx of them to KoW and FoW leading to tournament-centric rules mediocrity.) Jay, you do an excellent job speaking the truth in such a way that people would have great difficulty being offended while producing high-quality, enjoyable videos! Well done, again! 👍🎅👍

My 2022 goal is to finish my 2000 pt Salamanders list, and kitbash enough servitors that I can run a squad of them with whatever weapon options I want; I've been itching to ACTUALLY kitbash and hack up some plastic (not just using an aggressor head on an eradicator)

Honestly, I think you should switch to KillTeam - that will allow you to: 1.) shill for KillTeam 2.) have a buffet of all factions to paint 3.) get more games in with the little time you have Being able to paint more factions because they require fewer models is going to be the next level for you. New color schemes, new materials - fur, skin, shiny armor… it’ll allow you to really branch out your skillz - and at the same time, help the community and tick more boxes for those who will tune in! In time, you’ll be able to offer better insight into each KillTeam army, and *gasp* maybe even get those Battle Reports done!

My miniature New years goals: -Finish up that 2,000 points of Khrone Daemons for Age of Sigmar. Seriously, I've been sitting on those damn things sense the newest Battletome came out... what? 2 to 4 years ago now? -Work on my backlog of stuff; paint my Daemonettes from the Wrath and Rapture boxset to be with my Word Bearers army along with my other odds and ends of Daemons that are hanging around from various odd kits. -Try and finish all of those 'Getting started' box sets before buying other miniature for those armies. Finish what I have first before I let myself get tempted by other miniatures. I'm hoping to get to playing games this year but it might not happen considering everything that his going on...

I started a tyranid army. I have about 1300 points so far. Awesome models to paint.

I'm over here with my Imperial Knights and still winning 1/3 of my games and having a blast. Usually run Crusader/Errant with 6 armigers (2 hel, 4 glaives). I play to be social more than anything.

The counter point to ignore tournaments which I think you made some good points about list details is that stats from tournaments can give you a good idea of what factions are strong and which are weaker. There's a concept I've come across of plumbing for armies in the fat middle with a 40-50% win rate as that will be give you armies that are evenly matched. Strong but not overly strong. People like the Honest Wargamer for AoS can inform purchasing choices.

Where did you get the cacti on the bases of the orks? Are they printed?

I had only just got into the hobby and my first army is Blood Angels. When I heard they were doing well I was kinda bummed because people would think I chose them just for that reason and not because the lore behind them was what I liked. Luckily my not having a clue what the hell I'm doing clearly shows I didnt build the army with some meta list. Also knowing they will be hit first with over corrections in balancing sooner rather than later isnt much to look forward to.

My new year goal: I want to actually finish stuff in this year. Since 2009 i just bought stuff, so I own 9 armys (8 40k, 1 fantasy) with over 1000 models. I didnt even have much money, I dont know where all that stuff comes from! But right now Im working on my white scars and paint them at a (for me) high standard, so I want to use that energy to get tons of good looking painted armys on to the table

I always hear that, and yet, most games I ever played were on tournaments (or preparing for such). Even if I played "light game", it was still on "tournament" rules. Another thing - there is bigger chances that "friends" actually say that you can't play BA using UM painted models - on tournaments there is nothing like that. In short - you got it all backwards...

I would love to see people playing the too meta space marine factions but using rando successor chapters, like Executioners, Star Phantoms, Relictors or Mentors. Imagine facing down white space marines in their deep green swimsuits. IMAGINE IT.

my hobby goals for 2022/23 are: - make 20 terrain pieces and one full set of terrain tiles (24 1 foot industrial terrain tiles made solely from things i can find at the supermarket - finish my current collection of sisters of battle - finish the knights I have that have been wip since 2020/21 including doing free handing on the heraldry (which is why i keep putting it off because it terrifies me - do 12 40k conversion build projects (i count a single squad as one project) - clear my 3rd party 40k backlog (currently sitting at near 70 models) including doing several reviews and converting some of them (some for my sisters, some for my admech, some for my guard - start on conversion building an admech army including finishing my skitarii horsemen that have been on hold since 2020 due to my needing to sculpt coats and fabric for them - finish my current wip cosplays (including sister of battle 2019 attempt, erza scarlet heart kruz outfit, rory mercury cosplay - make 10 sister of battle cosplay props: two bolt pistols, hand flamer, rebuild my foam flamer prop, make a meltagun prop, make a interchangeable combi weapon, rebuild my plasma pistol, make a reasonably scaled chainsword, heavy bolter (including attachment for the backpack), light up powersword, heavy flamer - make 10 new cosplays - start star wars legion (learn how to play it) - grow my channel to 500 subscribers (who knows if that is possible given this platform but my channel is a hobby not a job - make 12 terrain tutorial videos on projects I have done - finish my melee only mechanicus playthrough livestream series - play 5 games of warhammer when i write all that down is seems like a metric shipload especially for someone who is homeless and couch surfing at the start of 2022

The Nurgle faction is my jam but thought about doing a primarally meelee base Genestealer Kill Team using bodies and weapons from the Necromunda: Corpse Grinder Cult.

I want to actually play a tabletop wargame this year. I am thinking Stargrave and Gamma Wolves. I have plenty of minis for both, and just found a local wargame discord server. So with luck I will be able to find some games. Happy new year to all and good luck with new gaming endeavors.

New year hobby goals: finish 2k points of Thousand Sons. That’s about it, beyond some more playtime maybe. I already did my hobby downsizing - xwing, 40k (just two armies for me), dabbling with world of tanks minis because one of the xwing guys is, and two independent company skirmish games where I don’t need to buy anything else for them (Burrows & Badgers and Relicblade - highly recommend them for skirmish game itch).

I have yet to play any form of warhammer or own any models... I still watch every video as soon as it comes out because it does really interest me, so my New Years resolution is to paint my first space marine.

I really enjoyed The Binary Succession and Titandeath from the Black Library. Maybe it’s obvious from the titles but they’re AdMech focused and I find them super interesting.

The idea that we need to take a grain of salt with tournament results I agree with. But it can be indicative of a local meta. My area people seem to have an unending amount of money and always have "the best armies". But like you said they dont really understand the armies and play too aggressively

I am trying to buy less, and more often just paint a model for the fun of it trying new techniques are wacky colours. Also use my Mars Elgoo 3d printer more.
