i've had an active youtube channel for 10 years now, and i'm definitely glad i did it because i met a bunch of other cool artists, but making videos takes a LOT of time, sometimes even more time than the art itself! I decided to take a step back from it, and spend more time on the art, youtube helped me build an audience, and i'm happy with where it is at now, but i'd rather spend more time doing art

The last one was the main reason why I feel super sad for youtube creators, you can only do one thing and be stuck doing it again and again, I see many channels literally die because the creator wanted to do new things, as a person I still find it mindboggling that so many people will stop following you because you post something different than the usual, and one of the motives I miss old deviantart, was quite fun to watch an artist you follow change from different subjects or different art styles, now you need to enter a mold or else people stop caring for you, many incredible artists nowadays only draw one subject and in the same art style, you don't get variation anymore because people will stop following or caring if you change even silly stuff like fandoms

Okay I will explain from a normal viewer's perspective. There are countless creators on youtube and there are only 24 hours in a day. Viewers don't have unlimited time on their hands to give their attention to each and every content creator they like. And, imagine that, viewers may be already following dozens if not hundreds of different content creators. How are viewers supposed to keep up with everyone doing more and more stuff? They can't. So, naturally, they start making choices and sacrifices. They must do, because they have limited time. So they start to choose what to watch and what to skip. They choose the content they feel is the most valuable for them. And, you may find it surprising, but viewers are often following a content creator not for his personality or for who this creator is, but for what he does. So, if this content creator starts doing something else instead, the viewer may decide to stop watching - because there are other content creators that do what that person wants to watch.

@@devolays it still sucks though. And it isnt only the viewers. It is the algorythm that supress channels that offers diversity. 10 years ago you could make your passion projects without effecting how much your regular content will be visible for your followers. Nowadays on the other hand a single video could be bombed just because it isnt algorithm friendly and it will drag the whole performance of the channel down. If you had found a formula to be popular, youtube will force you to recreat it until people are getting bored of you.

Another tip for those who want to start a channel: Have a safety net before you start. A big safety net. Because of that inconsistent paycheck. A lot of creators dont talk about that safety net enough. I have a day job and that has made it impossible to maintain and be passionate about my social media because I'm drained of energy by the time I get home. So that's why all my socials are dead at this point and I feel because of that it's next to impossible to get it back in the algorithm once I can pick it back up. I have tried having a upload schedule and get nothing in return for months. It's an oversaturated market online but my art and style don't fit in with marketing offline and in the real world. So in my mind right now it's "What's the point?" Even as a unwilling hobbyist of this whole thing, a part of me wonders if it's even worth posting my work out there knowing the dark side of doing that (ie AI generator potentially stealing it, some troll going in and tearing it apart) . I have not seen someone who works full time on KZfaq and do art fulltime while having a day job that's not art full time and balance it and still maintain their mental health safely. KZfaq makes it darn near impossible.
@Kalitayy
@Kalitayy 6 ай бұрын
Even though I’m not an artist, I do have a day job and trying to succeed on KZfaq. I agree that it’s impossible to work on something else, let alone two while having a day job. You’ll get too tired after work to do anything else, leaving you with nothing to do other that work for the rest of your life. That’s why getting a day job instead of focusing on my KZfaq channel back when I was in college will forever haunt me as my biggest mistake I’ve done in my life. I am a failure simply because I played the game by the rules. They told me to study and get a job after graduating, so I did those things instead of pursuing my dreams. Now, the only thing I do is just work, sleep, work, sleep. And that’s just 1 “side hustle”! I cannot imagine how a person would do art, social media, and day job at the same time. That’s why I think day jobs are exclusively for people who have no passion.

One thing I'd like to add (and I hope you read this, even if you don't reply) Is that sometimes you just never gain traction in numbers. It's really inspiring to see a new channel doing something you like gain hundreds of subscribers in the first weeks, and then just keep growing; only for you yourself to give it a go and your numbers not only don't go up nearly as fast, they barely go up at all. It can be heartbreaking to be going into your 4th year and still have less than 100 subscribers and have videos you post daily getting view counts in either 0 or 1. And you can try advertising yourself and changing who you are, and imitating countless others or go completely solo and do your own thing and only gain 3 subscribers in a single month. Life is just like that sometimes. Some of us have the cards stacked against us, and that's okay, that's why it's vitally important to start off doing things you genuinely enjoy. Because you could be doing let's plays for seven and a half years and no one will ever hear of you.

It is really great to see this trend of bringing attention to the "not so dream like" parts of social media careers. It is so important to keep this in mind when thinking about where you want to be with your job in the future. For me youtube started out as a hobby and it still is. I love Speedpaints and I wanted to try out creating them of my own pieces. And I still enjoy watching my own speedpaints and see the progress I made. Even though I started taking my channel a bit more serious ca. half a year ago, it is still so tiny, that I don't really get engagement or many comments. At the same time I know that speedpaints are not pushed at all by youtube and I would need to upload a lot more often. But it also gives me the freedom to try out things without being afraid. So for me the most important thing at this point is, that I can enjoy my videos and consider youtube as a hobby with the little addition of taking it a bit more serious and less "on and off".

Had this video on earlier on my TV. Honestly, I'm happy I never got into doing KZfaq videos. Personal experience, I've always been bullied, whether it be in school or online over stuff I like (though I'm an adult, a lot of the animated movies and cartoons I like are targeted to kids, like DreamWorks Trolls or MLP for example). Those experiences made me afraid of mean people online, so I never did it. I do like drawing and post art occasionally on social media (not saying which for privacy), and it does make me happy people like it, even though it's more of a hobby and something I do for fun, and met some artists too. KZfaq can be a lot of work, but I'm so glad I started my channel. It introduces new people to my art business courses, allows me to meet and interact with so many artists, gives me a little $300 extra in ad revenue each month, and it even gets me a lot of freelance illustration contracts even though it's not the main goal of my channel. This is with only 13k subs and 2 videos per month so it really is all quite doable, although building up the channel at first WAS a terribly difficult slog.

This was a great video! I don't think KZfaq is a viable platform for a long term career and it's even worse for artists. I did start a channel and it's very tiny and I quickly saw that I had to pivot my content. I have chosen a very narrow niche now (digital art) but I do it because I enjoy it and there may be others who can learn something. I decided I am not chasing audiences and while I do take suggestions for things to cover it has to fit in with what I plan to do so it can get added to the list. You are so right about the time and energy it takes..it's ridiculous really what it takes to do one video weekly. And I work a FTJ, I also make and market my art as well as prep for videos. I have made it so I do the simplest process I can... Recording my screen and focus on what I am demonstrating. No fancy camera angles or speed painting or elaborate editing or scripting,tried that and I just don't have the time to invest to that extent with so little return. Plus as I have said elsewhere... It actually takes away from my actual art practice, physically and emotionally and that is not acceptable to me. KZfaq is a tool for me, not the end game. Thank you for sharing this we need more of it.

no. 3 - the exact reason why I've deleted my yt channel years ago. It was super fun when I was a student, but when I got my first full-time job in gamedev (means, add crunchtime lol) I had to quit yt, because I was constantly depressed that I don't have time and energy to draw and record enough personal pieces anymore. I honestly miss my little yt comnunity and all that "let's draw together" energy we used to have, but sometimes you have to choose. I've chosen to make close to zero personal art, but to focus on my day job without burning out. Also getting married and starting a family, but that's a bonus that came with me no longer pulling drawing all-nighters every day after work :p I would absolutely love to start one again in the future though (maybe on retirement lol), and it was 100% worth it to run one when I still had time to do so. But right now with my current lifestyle? No wayyy, yt is like having another job, and day is only so short. But when you have enough free time and feel like you want to try it, I'd say go for it, it was super fun experience ♥️

I agree with all the points brought up here. I made this channel back in 2012 and my first channel a year or so before. I made my channel as a side project, and I got to meet some great people, some of which I'm still friends with. But as mentioned in this video, most people don't see you as a person, even if you show your face. I was in my late teens when I got into things, I made my channel as a fun way to unwind. But that didn't stop people from sending death threats or people telling me I should unalive myself. At the time I was very deep into depression and almost did so. Though this was due to external influences, getting dms telling me that I'm worthless, stupid, etc didn't help. Keep in mind I wasn't trying to make money off of yt, I barely had 100 subs it was just a fun hobby and the bad hate poured in. I also got stalked, but that's something I'd rather not relive. Though I still would like to make content, those extremes, combined with so much more makes KZfaq feel more like dangerous rapids over a waterfall with deadly vipers and less like a fun dip into a cool pool on a warm day.

I have a passion for art and animation, but there weren't any majors that offer an art or an animation degree. So I had a hard time trying to pick from the limited selection of majors that my college has. When I found out that my YT channel gained success overnight, I was estatic. I considered not going to college and doing KZfaq full time but my mom didn't allow me lol. She told me I shouldn't abandon school. And that was a good thing since the success of my channel was only temporary and I had a hard time trying to keep the numbers stable to the point where I became burnt out. And let me tell you-I only earned like 12 dollars within the course of 1 year. I ended up finding a major that I'm passionate about, which is Computer Science, and now I plan to incorporate that in my channel if I have the free time to do so. I don't treat KZfaq as my main source of income, but merely something that I can get pocket money from, which removes the burden and pressure of trying to keep up with trends and consistency.

Hate comments are a big turn off for me as a teen ex-youtuber wannabe...I'm too sensitive to hate comments (thank you DA for the trama XD) and the internet has definingly turned into a huge witch hunt where everyone gets burnt on the stake of the algorithm. I just respect you for your strength to deal with all those internet trolls and wish you the best on your own youtube art journey!

Well people are different some people makes art not to make money but just for the sake of making art for me personally that's the approach I took and probably keep taking no matter how many people tell me I should try make money off of it, I already have a job. It doesn't really pay well but it gives me enough free time that allows me to draw when I don't have work More the power to anyone who's content creation is their job, from experience I know how hard it is to make any form of art, let alone do it on consistent enough base to make money off of it Great video, it really validated my mind set for approaching art 🙂

17:51 I agree with this so much, because I’ve experienced this first hand. Back when I originally made my channel I made gacha cringe videos for a very long time. For a while I was alright with this, because these videos were fun for me to make but eventually I got bored. So I completely stopped making those videos, and I just upload whenever and whatever I want to as long as it makes me happy rather than going by a schedule of uploading every four days and making the same videos over and over. When I came to this conclusion I was aware that not as many people would like my content or even unsubscribe. Unfortunately it did take me a while to realize that it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I stopped making those videos. I had to take my own time to realize that I couldn’t please everyone and I was better off doing whatever makes me happy.

I've thought about making KZfaq videos for a bit. Probably just speedpaints with music in the background. I don't have stuff that I would need for a channel. (I currently don't have money for a camera and other stuff I might need.)

I don’t regret making my KZfaq channel ^^ I don’t get much views unlike when I started, and I did get drama on one specific video but I’m still glad I made it there was a lot of negative comments but the constructive criticism and support helped me improve my art and content. Sure I only get a few views now but I don’t really care I just want to have fun making animatics and sharing my art 😊

To addon to this comment, I feel like you really should mix up your content because I've heard that if you shake up your content, you have a far better chance of sticking around. There may be several comments telling you to keep making the same content over and over again but eventually, I really feel like you should start making more videos related to games, tv shows, etc. You may not feel like making the switch right now, but there will be a time where you will have to start making playthroughs, reviews, and other kinds of videos that you really want to make.

my comment will probably be burried, but i wanted to say that creepy pasta narrations or the other ideas you mentioned would be good ideas, and you have a great voice for narrating! it's sad you recieve so much unwarranted hate when it is clear from the first glance on your videos that you put in a lot of effort.

Point 3 is why I gave up on my art channel and while I plan to get back into it soon, it's definitely going to be more of a "hey this is what I've been doing" chatty videos and speedpaintings where I can manage it rather than the indepth topics and discussions because those take so much of my energy. All five are definitely things to keep in mind and be aware of how they might impact people

Definitely an interesting and informative video. You actually covered quite a few points that I myself learned the hard way. While I know that there is not a one-size-fits-all formula for making a successful channel (and if someone says there is one, they are lying for views), I do find it to be a fun puzzle to tackle. Was wondering if you thought about a video on how to respond / deal with the negativity of being a content creator? Anyway, Thank you for making this video and I hope that you stay sane through the stress that being a content creator brings with it.

your first point reminded me of the first (and last) time i uploaded a video here o(-( i uploaded a speedpaint literally just to show it to family and friends, but as soon as i posted a link to it on twitter it was immediately hit with 4 dislikes . not even any hateful comments or dms but just the sheer horror i felt, the silence of getting four dislikes in the span of a second, five minutes after uploading a speedpaint gave me so much youtube trauma i decided i never wanted to come back LOL

You really gotta choose a main topic you LOVE make videos about or you will end up like me: Had a channel (well, I still have it but pretty much abandoned it), it still has 4k subs somehow (lost like 500 after being inactive); my channel was mainly about a perticular game I used to play a lot and when one of my vids blew up, I started making even more to the point that my subs just weren't interested in any other types of videos. And I burnt out because I just couldn't make any more vids about said game because I hate stagnation and always wanted to make something greater but ran out of ideas. Of course, if you're fine doing 1 specific type of content, go nuts! But if you want a channel with variety, be careful about the content ratio. And yea, I also had a tiny wave of hate because I was stupid but what can we do, we all learn from personal experiences :)

I am not the kind of person who deals with hate very well BUT I have to do KZfaq. Honestly, I don't have a choice, I don't know who I am without KZfaq. It's the only thing that motivates me to do the things I always wanted to do. And my only other option is to live off disability funding and rot which... It just isn't really living... So no matter how much it hurts and how hard it is I'm pushing through this wall and uploading. Mark my words I'll be a big KZfaqr one day, hopefully... I mean maybe not big but like, ya know. Not this channel btw, I never comment using my content channel and... I probably should tbh lol.

"For every hate comment there will be 100 kind ones..." So what does it say about me when I've gotten worse levels of hate with no followers? I even got a hate video made about me that has more views than most of my videos...and no one even knows I exist! Then again, that KZfaq is by far the least toxic environment of all the social media I've been on speaks volumes.

While I haven't really started a channel yet (looked into for years!) I'm in a weird place where I finally can. My chronic Illness prevents me from working, which is both a blessing and a curse. On the downside there's all the negative things that come with my illness; but on the other side I have all the time to draw, play games, whatever. So with that time I've been drawing a ton, and try to treat it like a job. Of course, there's times when I can't do much for long/ varying periods due to flare ups, but I always come out of them! I feel lucky that it's something I can focus full time on, rather than never having time if I had a job. And now that I got myself a nice laptop that has the ability to... well actually function compared to my old one lol- but now I can run games way better, and also record them. So if I already like playing games and have plenty of time to make videos, why not? Especially since I've been wanting to for years! I don't planning on separating the channels I post art or game stuff to. At least for now anyways- I don't have the energy for that. So when I do post (not on this account I'm commenting from), I'll be doing what makes me happy!

You probably don't have energy to handle this, and I understand. But if it helps, I would suggest maybe trying to make a second channel for gaming and other stuff? Like I said if it's too much for you I completely understand. Just thought I'd give some advice 😊 don't forget you're loved! Love overpowers hate!

I'm glad I watched this, because I really started doing my own channel about a year+ ago, and I am firmly in the realm of the "hobbyist". I have a tiny subscription audience, I post what I want when I want, and have said before that it is "the side gig of a side gig". I have no fancy music or FX, and my videos clock in around 10 to 15 minutes max. All the things you said confirm my suspicions. I was in touch with the folks behind a popular "urbex/rurex" channel that went big ("Explore With Us") and they said the same things. The harassment, stalkers, creepy comments, etc sucked the fun out of it. That said I enjoy my channel and because I don't put that much effort into it it is a low-impact gig for me; I concentrate on comics and such and leave the big art & social commentary to you Titans in the Ring! 😉

My biggest fear is the topic on how far people will go to hunt you down, for the sole reason of, "not liking your content". What brings me fear not entirely on if the people will go after me. But those who I care for just to get to me. This has happened to some youtubers and none of them warrant that level of psychotic mindset from people, yet here we are. Because all the hard work stated, sure I would struggle. But I can always adapt to it after enough time. I can handle people saying shit about me on a daily basis, Hell that was me growing up at school and to top that off many members of my own family would be like that. So I can take how harsh people want to be. Because there's a saying, "You can only hurt something that you can understand or truly know, if you don't. You words have no effect." That being said, I do feel annoyed when I ledgit didn't do or saying anything wrong to anyone and several people can come to this comment and just lowkey harass me, and unprompted at that. The other fear is, honestly getting a bigger content creators eyes on me and with one slight point against their world view they will unapologetically slander me for literally the pettiest of reasons. (Yeah, this community can probably guess who I am referring to.)

Blame YT for shoving the wrong content up people's faces over and over again. I go see shorts, I get recommended 1 stupid ass 0 views Minecraft channel, 2, 3, 4, 50, kids playing PUBG, kids opening lootboxes... At some point I snap and may even be harsh in their 0 comment section. Cause I keep pressing "don't recommend this channel" again and again but they never end. So if someone gets your channel and they don't wanna see this stuff and you're like #82 today, expect some toxicity that's not mean for you specifically, you just happened to be at that snapping point for someone. And they go tell you why drawing fanart sucks. Because... well, some reason for nagging is needed. Just don't take it personal. 99% time it's not about your content, it's people venting. Be understanding. Be patient. Just ignore what doesn't make sense.
