I truly miss this very informative, concise and articulate gentleman’s videos!!! I have found his videos to be extremely helpful to me as a new Honda Rebel 1100 DCT owner. This video for instance, has given me outstanding advice about issues with the Rebel 1100 that hasn’t been addressed or mentioned in any of the many videos I’ve watched about this bike! If by chance you read my comment, please continue to grace your subscribers with your knowledge and expertise. Thank you so much. 👍

Great to hear! I feel bad about not adding new videos for a while. Here's what happened I took on a part-time teaching job at Northeastern University's Oakland campus. The pursuit of supplementary income has cut into my free time and put my KZfaq video production on temporary pause. I realize it's not ideal, but I'll get back to uploading new videos next summer, after the teaching gig ends. I have several new projects percolating in the back of my mind.

I subscribed, Steve. I'm about your age and bought a 1100DCT in 2021. Great bike and I love it. I live down in Florida and ride almost every day. You are 100% right on the twitchy throttle and the accidental down-shifting. I've done both of those more than once. The ankle grabber I've avoided unintentionally because I bought a Two Brothers Racing exhaust and it rides higher by design. I ride carefully and I'm the guy actually doing the speed limit (or maybe 5 over, max). I'm in no hurry and really enjoy the ride. Thank you for the video and I'll be watching for your next offering. Thanks again. Eric in Kissimmee, Florida.

Great video Papa Steve, So I found that you can help keep from 2 of these bad safety mistakes with one tip. Keep your right foot on the peg. This keeps you from getting the ankle pinned as well as you are able to use the foot brake when accidently hitting the throttle. I have hit the throttle twice my first month of owning the DCT while at a stop or getting ready to stop putting down both feet while maneuvering the bike. I'm an experienced rider with over 15 years of riding but still a learning curve without the clutch. Yep just something to think about and getting used to.

I bet the accidental throttle issue would be horribly dangerous for a Harley rider riding the DCT. Every Harley rider I have ever seen tends to blip the throttle just to make noise at a stop light.
@papastevesgarage
@papastevesgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Well maybe not all of them. Riders can always click the DCT into manual mode with a flick of the right thumb so they can nervously rev the engine at stop lights. Personally, I prefer to take my hands off the grips then sit back to relax while waiting for the green. No need to fish for neutral, and the bike is always ready to leap into action when the light changes.

All your point are in the money, had the same issues, i wish them botons had illumination. without it gloves i can ride at night wirh no issues. My borton problem start when i got them supper safe gloves who dont break in no matter what i do. The solution was getting less safe thinner gloves or not wearing anyat all, then i can find the buttons in the dark with ease. The uncle snager can be inproved by giving your rear shot two turns, in my case it did wounders with my uncle and and hard bump issue.

If you are engaging the throttle when reaching for the front brake, then might i suggest that your front brake needs adjusting in terms of its position relative to the bars and throttle. Try raising or lowering the brake lever such that you can smoothly move from the throttle to the brake without inadvertently moving the throttle.

@@papastevesgarage sure, all I did was take off the muffler after the catalytic converter. I’m coming from the CMX 500, model year 2020 camp and I’ve found that it sounds just fine with no muffler… it sounds just like the little “shorty GP” slip on muffiler they sell for $40. The shorty GP is a joke don’t buy it… If I want to be quiet I’ll just throw the muffler back on. But most times I’m wearing ear plugs and over 60 mph the wind noise is greater than the engine. Also with it out of the way I do not have the heel pinch problem, when I put the muffler back on it happens at least once each ride. And I can throw it up on the paddock stand with no problem with the exhaust off.

Steve, I have a question: does this bike’s throttle have a slack when you throttle, allowing you to rev without actually accelerating (i own a scooter and thise types have cvts and has a small slack that allows you to rev without actually accelerating) or is the acceleration instantaneous?

accidental throttle happened to be due to grip strips on my gloves, after riding in the warmer weather with summer gloves they " stuck " to the throttle and when I pulled my hand off the throttle it turned and the bike lurched forwards, those gloves are in the bin now and the new summer gloves have normal leather only palms and not the "sticky " type.

@papastevesgarage

I need more information about this from you. I don't know what a "clutchless lever" is. I'm not sure how you would link such a control to your transmission. Ankle snagger: new exhaust pipe, like V&H or 2 bros, downshift maybe a piece like clip to disable the button or ideally is to disable the button electronically. Accidental throttle, maybe a deadzone, like loosening the accelerator cable? Bro, I know nothing about bikes but I hope it can be done.

That was the 11th commandment that God forgot to chisel onto the stone tablets. Keeping the right foot on the peg is a terrific idea, but I can't envision in a world populated by 8 billion people how every rider of motorcycles can always keep the right foot off the ground.

Had that accidental throttle happen to me twice! Felt like the throttle had stuck. I didn’t crash but put the fear of God in me! I think I might have to release he throttle and gently reapply the break! It felt like riding a bucking horse. The reason I didn’t crash was luck and I held onto the break but the wheel kept going! I'm glad you're safe. The "live" throttle is problem. I love the DCT anyway, but even when I'm aware of the issue and cautious, I occasionally bump the throttle. One time I was close enough to the van in front of me that my tire hit its bumper. No damage to van or bike, but unnerving. I stay well back from the car in front of me at stop lights now.

Now I'm not an expert, I'm not some Moto GP rider but I do know a thing or two about bikes. Also I currently own a Rebel 1100. Really? Wheelie control? Is that so you can ride a long wheelie and not flip over? I sure could have used that on my Honda back in the 70's.
@papastevesgarage
@papastevesgarage 9 ай бұрын
I suspect you're pulling my leg, but to clarify. The Rebel 1100 "wheelie control" is designed to keep the front wheel on the ground, not help you keep the wheel in the air while preventing from tipping over. The Rebel 1100 would not be my choice of motorcycles if doing wheelies was my thing. It's a cruiser, not a sport bike. Turn off the Torque Control and the 1100 has enough power and torque to get a bit of a front wheel lift, at least with the manual transmission version. I can't attest to the DCT version. The DCT is what I have, and I don't plan to try it.

@papastevesgarage
@papastevesgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Others have expressed a similar viewpoint. I think the Rebel 1100 is an outstanding motorcycle. I should have stressed that more forcefully. The test for me, though, is whether the same rider on a different bike would encounter the same problems. Then clearly the issues would be the rider's. If the issues are unique to the Rebel 1100, then Honda could and should tweak them.

@papastevesgarage 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it scary. The DCT is usually well behaved. It's best to be forewarned about the occasional quirk, though. I've heard from some DCT owners who always ride in manual mode so they can routinely control shifts. In manual mode, the transmission only downshifts automatically when the bike is slowing and engine speed requires a lower gear. Manual clutch-free up and down shifting is blindingly fast with a DCT. I'm lazy, so I stay in automatic mode most of the time.
