The worst pit incident I've ever seen happened at Houston Raceway, in 1991, or 92, during the Slick 50 Nationals. A Top Fuel Funny car was staged, with the body up and suddenly accelerated, right when a track security guard was walking across the lane, about 20' in front of the car. She went right into the blower belt and got whipped around like a rag doll. You ever seen something that was so abrupt and shocking that it made your stomach hurt, almost to the point of nausea? It was like that, and I had already seen a couple of dead bodies up close and had witnessed some nasty industrial accidents. Anyway, after she was life flighted out, the track announced that she was ok and talking. Kinda think that was BS, since once they got the car stopped, she was completely limp and never moved again.

Nitro is unstable as hell, and even more so in hot weather, so it doesn't take much to set it off. It seems it would be to their advantage if there was some way to vent the cylinders between run times to prevent a volatile fuel buildup. Things can get out-of-hand quickly when you work at the speed of these guys between runs, no matter how careful they are.
@jayss106 жыл бұрын
Somebody in the know please humor my question because I honestly don't know. When they are rolling these engines over with a long wrench (understand why they do it) to clear the engine why don't they just pull a plug from each cylinder and then roll it? Or perhaps blast compressed air down in the cylinder after a plug is pulled?
