If you've been considering an e-bike conversion kit, you've probably considered a Swytch kit; you may have even watched my video review of it. I also compared the Swytch kit to the Geeko front wheel e-bike conversion kit from 100G and concluded that the Geeko kit is the better option for a number of reasons (check out the video if you haven't seen it).
However, in the video, I am going to compare the front wheel kits which you have seen to a rear wheel conversion kit from Geeko to see which feels better to ride. Big thanks to 100G for providing the kit used in this test.
If you want to learn more about these kits, place an order for a Geeko kit or join the waiting list for a Swytch kit, click on the below links and explore their websites. Both offer lots of information and insights into the hardware and the technology behind them.
Geeko have also sent me an exclusive code for you to use when placing an order, giving you $60 off the price! Just enter "Paul-60" at checkout!
Geeko:
www.100g.tech/product/
Swytch:
www.swytchbike.com
Neither of these links contains affiliate associations and I earn nothing from any subsequent purchases made by clicking the links.
For clarity, I paid for the Swytch kit shown in the video with my own money, whilst I received the Geeko kits free of charge from the suppliers with the intention of providing an honest and unbiased comparison review, which I believe I have done here. I was not paid for the review.

I bought the front wheel kit because I am 110kg (I'm tall) and cycle 25km per day to work on some rough roads and was worried the rear wheel wouldn't be strong enough. I break spokes on the rear wheel on my GT mountain bike which is strong........ I think rear wheel motor is better but I made the right choice for the reasons above. Looking forward to the double motor vid. Setting the cadence sensor can be tricky but when set its great piece of kit and usually use it on power 1 and then 2 for some hills and I still feel I'm getting a work out without getting to out of breath. I live in Japan maybe I will post a vid of my ride to work it can be entertaining.

There is a big advantage to a front wheel motor - that is when climbing a slippery, muddy track as I discovered on a long tour in Scotland. The base bike is a cheap road bike and has a old Swytch kit and worked very - when it was going. It failed about 20% of the trip. It didn’t work at all on a subsequent Burgundy trip. I left the batteries in the car and carried on. Swytch tried to help via email. They don’t do out of warranty repairs. I bought a replacement handlebar bracket and it now seems ok. Front drive is perfectly good. The pedal cadence sensor is easily knocked but easily relocated. Low gears help and the lower the better if touring, as the pedal sensor will pick up fast pedal rate and send more current on steep hills. The handlebar battery is annoying and stops you putting a handlebar pannier. A frame battery is better. Now that I have a wiring diagram, I am going to redistribute the battery and control unit. I don’t want to waste the money I spent on Swytch. Wish me luck.

Sounds like a worthwhile exercise - hope it all works out for you. I do prefer the Geeko kit for that very reason - a frame mounted battery over a handlebar weight.

I have to agree with Paul on how natural the rear wheel kit feels. I was sceptical that the 20mph showing in the app was accurate until I fitted my Garmin to confirm, it feels so normal - but quicker! I initially had the intermittent power issue that Paul has in the dual kit review, but after emailing 100G* they sent me instructions on how to update the controller software and it’s fine now. Also, I don’t know what battery came with Paul’s kit(s), but the 10AH one that I ordered with mine is worth the extra and I get at least 40 miles from a full charge. In total it cost me just over 600 quid, with a 7 speed cassette, which I think is a real bargain. *VERY quick response when I’ve had to email them.

That is a lot of money, undeniably! There may be discount codes knocking around, but I’ll leave that with you. As for hills, it is great, though the battery obviously works hard and goes through its capacity quicker. On a muddy hill, an electric front wheel can spin a bit, and you have stand up to maintain the weight on it for traction, but an electric rear wheel is best, whatever the terrain, I have found.

I got a Swytch and I wish I had just gotten a regular E-bike. Most of the pieces couldn't fit (Handlebars and things were thicker than the attachments could stretch too), and the battery promises 9 miles, but not if you need to go up and down a hill on your commute.

Hi Paul, Thanks for the review. Did you notice any reaction time difference between the front and the back motor wheel kits ? I'm wondering if the wheel-embedded sensor makes the motor react faster or on the contrary slower than the first version you tested. I guess this would be obvious when you start pedaling from a complete stop, without using the throttle.
@PaulsViewsReviews
@PaulsViewsReviews Жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas. Good question. I actually felt the reaction from the rear was a little slower but only very marginally. The delay wouldn’t be enough to affect your confidence is getting up to speed while pulling away from traffic lights, for example.

I waited years for my Swytch kit and received multiple bogus shipping docs. It finally arrived last week after one hell of a battle and threats of legal action but doesn't fit front suspension drop out forks on two mountain bikes I have tried so total waist of time and money. The supplied wheel needs 10mm drop out, the manual says it is very unusual to be a 9mm drop out which is bullshit. It would be unusual on the back but this is a front wheel conversion! I didn't even see an option for axle size on the ordering page so didn't know it was an issue. I now know of at least one reviewer who had exactly the same problem. Apparently the remedy is to file the axel but this did not work for the reviewer as it put breaks etc out of alignment which forced him to give up. I will NEVER buy from a startup company again.

I filled mine and had no problem, just used a fine file and kept switching sides to get it even. I guess maybe I was lucky as I was a bit worried. They offered to replace it but I was too impatient. I also had to file down the plastic that holds the pedal sensor so that it could be completely flat in order to have the right distance. ALSO, the display won't fit either of my handle bars??? Why didn't they just design it with a strap that would fit anything??? It's not very universal at all it seems but luckily I got it up and running.

Front or rear motor you still need the same pedal sensor unless your motor can sense torque, I believe. In your case it seems that it has a torque sensor, not a cadence sensor. A cadence sensor is not possible since you have gears.

i bought an swytch eco gen 2. the motor is great from swytch but the battery was never able to do more than 18 on a charge even on the lowest level of pedal assist. i adapted a bigger battery to it now and get about 30 miles on full power pedal assist doing about 23 on flat. pretty good. the new ones look fairly hopeless for range and upgrade potential.

Thanks for the feedback. I have to admit that the cost does creep up but I think the deciding factor is whether you already have a bike you love that you don't want to replace. If you've already spent a ton of money buying a bike with great components, you don't have room for a second bike but you do not want that extra nudge up a hill then a kit is a great idea. Firstly, thanks - I appreciate that. That's a good question, which I can't be 100% certain of answering correctly, but the key is that the rear wheel come with space for a gear cassette so, assuming you still need one of those with your carbon belt drive, then it should be fine to fit. I can't think of a reason why the cadence sensor wouldn't;t function the same way, too! I hope the guys come back to you soon.

I was seriously considering an ebike conversion like the Geeko but have been discouraged by some experienced bike folks who warn that it would not be a good idea to install a kit on a bike that may not be able to handle the increased torque and forces etc that would be introduced, especially in areas like the dropouts. Steel frames seem to be preferred, so i'm not sure now since i have an aluminum frame hybrid. what do you think?
@PaulsViewsReviews
@PaulsViewsReviews Жыл бұрын
Hi. With a 250w motor, the torque is not considered enough to be as problem, I’m assured. If you go onto the Geeko website they do talk about it - and will sell you a torque arm for your bike, but only suggest it for larger motors. If you’re inside of Europe, you’ll likely be sticking to 250w, if you want to be legally complaint. Outside of the European zone and you go for something bigger, it might be worth considering.

The bracket is really quite neat and very solidly secured where a water bottle would go. The wheel looks and feels as solid as the factory wheel to me. I’ve ridden off road a bit on mine and not even thought about the stability of the battery, as nothing drew my attention to it, either during or afterwards. Totally true about the throttle and the motor limit in the UK. Throttle is only for private land and the motor is still a 250W motor, to stay legally compliant on public highways. For my new video, I have kept the dual motors for use while off the roads to stay compliant. Also, you can turn either one off using the app, should you need to. It was an interesting experience! Thanks Dot. If anyone reading would like to learn more about UK laws on riding an EAPC, I have talked about it one of my earlier videos and you can read more here: www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules

SWYTCH - Warning to others - DO NOT use this company. They do not stand behind their products. I purchased ($600 for the kit) their earlier gen kit in the fall of 2021. Rode the bike a total of less than 50 miles over that time. Kept the battery charged in the 60-80% range as recommended. The battery is CRAP and will not hold a charge, causing it to cut out after 3-5 mins of use. Their answer to me - BUY ANOTHER KIT ! Buyer BEWARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😡😡😡😡😡

Do you think we should be worried about these batteries from China?
@PaulsViewsReviews
@PaulsViewsReviews 10 ай бұрын
I certainly aren't worried about it. So much of what we have is made in China and, while there will always be crap that comes out of pretty much any country, most of the products from China are mass produced and tend to work pretty well. My experience, anyway!

Its is pretty steep - just depends on how much you want to stick with your existing 'base bike' as to whether it is worth it for you. Thanks for watching though.

@@PaulsViewsReviews i mean compared to the manufacturing and shipping costs pre unit this is absolutely ridiculous.fot the price of this kit you can buy a decent new e bike with more battery and power.
