Painting @lewisnoble_artist
Photos @cyclopsrock
Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

I liked the original plein air painting once you cropped it to a square. Sometime the freshness of the plein air painting is more exciting than a changed composition. Do you ever just leave the plein air paintings uncollaged? I find the way you work to be quite interesting.

Occasionally but I think it’s better to try and see how far you can take it. Even if it goes wrong it’s better to experiment and see if something interesting happens.

I so enjoy watching you make these crops - and I was thinking Nope exactly when you threw that in! I appreciate your sense of humor - we just can't take this art making too seriously! I'm looking forward to painting and cropping some of my own pieces this coming week.

I so appreciate the explanation Lewis, because you know we all LOVED your original crop and we all new the collage was going to be a game of "what's he after now?"! So fun to watch!!. And as I've been collaging with you for a while now I've come to realize risk taking with the collage gets easier (and more fun) as you have better and better original source materials to work with (marks and bold bits of paint) from the entire paper and even in this case a second piece to collage with. My journals are full of great references for the winter months now :-). I've learned so much from the courses and being in the membership about how to make my art really feel like "me" -thanks so much!

I love to paint on a larger canvas and then cut it down to size when I find the picture within the painting I most like (via a makeshift view-finder). I picked that up from you and your work in collage, they're great! Thanks!

So did I. I always want to see how far I can take a piece of work however. It can be risking losing something but it's only paint after all.

Great. Love the spontaneity. Do you work on heavy watercolour paper or mixed media paper ?
@LewisNobleArtist
@LewisNobleArtist 9 ай бұрын
Not watercolour paper. I find it too absorbent for acrylics, it makes them really dull.

Thanks. I will try heavier mixed media paper or prepare some hardboard with gesso
