On breeding + saving. (And for squash types that can cross I'd consider barriers for if very serious about lineage - organza/tulle works well and comes in rolls to make your own little bags. I often just stick to one variety of what can cross per year, though with ones that need a mile+ radius it can sometimes come down to luck or living with the outcome which isn't always bad!)

To all the new gardeners out there. Take a look around your neighborhood, and see if you can find someone who has been gardening for years. Us experienced gardeners usually live to share their love of gardening. We can help with local growing conditions, soil conditions, and maybe have a few.seeds from our packet to share. Consider finding a local seed sharing group. Make your seed starting mix. Rent a tiller. Please do not give up gardening because of everything going on. You just have to get creative.

Thanks for the timely reminder! Yes, I work in a plant store and we’ve had trouble getting certain things. Canna products, nitrile gloves, and especially terra cotta, much of which is produced in Italy. The advice to get gardens started now is really good, especially if you’re going to be digging up sod and putting it at the bottom of raised beds. I moved in August and got a whole ornamental garden planned, dug and mulched, and moved the plants from the old place, so I’ve taken a bit of a breather, but this was a great reminder to get my raised beds set up so that the sod can die and start composting so that things will grow better in the spring. Those beds are gonna go out there in the next week or so. Also that kale behind you looks amazing!

Invest in some really good, hand forged gardening tools instead of machinery. Double dig your garden plot instead of roto tilling it. Gardening done right, the old-fashioned way is hard work and will give you a fit body as well as tasty, low-cost food. Choose a location for your garden that NEVER had a lawn treated with pesticides and herbicides if you want good results. Start a composting bin using trimmings from landscape plants and wild plants that have not been "treated" with pesticides and herbicides. Invest in a good rabbit-proof, wire mesh fence around your garden. Interplant different types of vegetable plants and herbs in your garden instead of planting blocks/rows of all the same kind of plant. You want to make it more difficult for insect pests to follow the scent of the plants they love to eat or to lay their eggs on. Invest in some water barrels to collect rain water or run a removable plastic pipe from your roof's downspout to the garden. Raised beds are fine if you get too much rainfall or have soggy soil but not so good in arid regions or places that have very hot summers and periods of drought. Use flattened cardboard boxes or homemade, chemical-free mulch as weed barriers and to hold in moisture during droughts. Learn what types of food plants do best in your region and focus on growing those instead of nursing along plant types that will never do very well. And don't forget to plant some dwarf fruit trees, fruit bushes and fruiting vines, varieties suitable to your region, in locations where they will not shade your vegetable plants too many hours during the growing season or where their roots will compete with your vegetable plants for water and soil nutrients. Plant heirloom varieties of food plants suitable to your region and save some seeds from your best plants each year. Do this so you will not be dependent upon what seed merchants are selling each planting season. Have a plan for preserving an abundant harvest by home canning, freezing or dehydrating your surplus produce. Remember to rotate each year where you plant certain vegetables in your garden so you do not get a build-up of soil pests and fungal diseases in your garden soil. And let your garden plot go fallow and get choked with weeds one year out of every five or so years because this will greatly improve the fertility of the soil and reduce soil-borne pests and diseases.

This is why I cleaned up on end of season seeds last fall, and put in a seed order a few days ago to fill in the holes. I've also stocked up on canning jar lids. I was in pretty decent shape last spring using what seeds were leftover from the year before, but that only lasts so long. Also if you haven't thought about it, get a dehydrator. The things that I couldn't can, or freeze got dehydrated. I dehydrated things I don't normally like onions and garlic. I'm sure glad that I did. My dehydrating tasted so much better than what I got from the store. I will be doing it again next year. I'm glad you mentioned potting mix and gloves. I wouldn't have thought of that. I'll see about getting some next time I'm at the store. That gets me to thinking that seed starting pots might be a good idea too.

Thanks for the inspiration to plan my garden for 2021. My garden was beautiful for 2020. I want to plant more vegetables from seeds. Have a great holiday season. 🌲

Thanks for the video I agree and feel that you are right on about thinking ahead about these things! I need to quit procrastinating and get out there and get what I need.

Just picked up 3 pair of very nice brand new gardening/ mechanic gloves for $1 (for 3) at a thrift store. Check alternative places for what you need. Not only are they cheaper but they also support your local community as opposed to big box stores who only help the 1%. Love your channel! Long time subscriber.

Good advice about preparing early for this coming spring. I think there will at some point be a shortage and/or longer wait times for the stores to restock their inventory or even receive this year's shipment of inventory for the yard and garden work.

Such great advice. We have more raised beds built but need to get our soil started. Think we will plan it earlier now

My local blue store already has it's seed displays and summer-flowering bulbs and tubers up, so I definitely grabbed some when I was there the other day. Good call on grabbing more soil, though. I will have at least two new raised beds to fill this year and it might be worth it to go ahead and have the fill dirt handy!

my gardening plans had to be done later last year because we bought our house in november 2019, we moved early pandemic april 2020, then the first 14 days of our quarantine I set about getting what I could started. My plan was to get a big garden going before pandemic. I love gardening, just hard to in a town house that lacks space. Summer 2020 I got chickens. I've got my seeds, ordered berry bushes, potato seed and all that already. I got a food saver for christmas, that came with canning jar vacuum sealer attachment - great for dry gooods. I'm hunting for a pressure canner. I won't bother with a rotor tiller as I've gone no dig - chicken tilling. I've seen all these short supply issues. heck even buying seeds at the moment, so many varieties are already sold out!

There are 2 huge 4000+ sq ft new homes being built on a former 10 acre farm (split into 5 acres each) next door to my farm. At the price of lumber and new construction right now the cost has to be ridiculous. Already got all my seeds and supplies for 2021 garden and making lots of compost. Finally bought a broad fork so should save me time loosening soil in the spring. Outdoor planting time will be here soon! Happy gardening!
