As an up & comer whose listened religiously since highschool...this honestly scared me. I'm 7+ months (I lost count) into quitting my job to pursue music full time. For the 1st 3months, I was going making music like it was as easy as breathing, Having noticeably greater success than when I was working a 9 to 5? I was feeling myself. Fast forward into really knowing how hard it is to be broke, into having ridiculous writer's block, into depression, into a storm of thoughts and emotions I didn't think I could feel? Then watching this... I wonder does it get easier? hahaha Lord knows I've been diligent, relentlessly persistent and hardworking! (With my fair share of distractions, laziness & procrastination?) But man mixed emotions from watching this. Off top Fear was the first emotion I felt. But strangely intense motivation and an eagerness to try my hand at navigating my life at that level. No one asked me to tell my life story hahaha but this is the internet bih. This is honestly powerful. Blessings.

This was incredible and so real. I pursued music full time in Dunedin in 2018 and ended up on the benny, the classic story. Mental health spiralled down, but thankfully full time work was only a town away and I could rebuild what I’d lost. I wish I could have faced reality at the time, but I guess I had to go through it.

Honestly seems like the struggles of growing up in a working class neighbourhood gives you an urge to be expressive of these struggles. Art in all forms provides the outlet that allows that expression. A catch 22 tho cause art hardly pays the bills. You work all day to make ends meet and maybe you can make art at night. It’s a miserable existence for creatives. Shout out to the working class. From your blue collar boys in Glen Innes

All these talented free spirited souls, if they were in countries with large populations, they would be doing well enough that music would support them enough financially as well as it is spiritually. The small size of the NZ population disadvantages our 'underground' our 'alternative, the fringe, the edgy, our real artists. The audience in NZ is so small. Eg Look at say Japan, 127 million people which is 26 times the size of NZ. Let's say the underground audience is a potential 2% of the population. That's an underground audience of 2540000 in Japan compared to 96,000 in NZ.... Life outside the majority is not easy in NZ.

NZ doesn't do enough to support it's local artists. Ask any high schooler to name a NZ artist or musician or their music and they will struggle to do so. What gets promoted by mainstream radio stations is miniscule compared to the epic talent in this country. Sadly the only way to 'make it' in the music industry is to leave NZ. On the upside NZ has awesome talent and the world should see more and more of what our people have to offer.

The documentary is great. I love how they had to let go of old ideas around being an artist to embrace growth in their lives, like being a father, partner and having a family. Alot of people will relate to this, and it's great to have different viewpoints of real peoples lives not some slogan.
