Oh boy did i need to hear this! I definitely struggle with preparation. It just doesnt click with me most of the time so i sometimes just don’t bother doing it and impov the work as i go along. And unfortunately I’ve been getting by for so long like that, that it’s super hard to overcome that procrastination. But I’m still a student so i know i have time. But it also doesnt help that it feels like everything needs to be done quickly nowadays

I think this also comes down to age as well. I've noticed, as a person who started drawing in middle school. I drew so frickin fast. The faster the better for me. Now I'm college age, it's not as true. I'm still notorious for being absurdly fast with my work. But it's also true I think I've slowed down and learned to spend time finessing what's necesarry. And leaving things deep in the shadow a bit unfinished.

I love you dood. I've been watching your tutorials and they're nothing short of heavenly and magnificent, I've learned much more art related skills in a couple of days watching your short, objective, very informative and well structed videos than in years of reading and watching other tutorials. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I pray you're doing well and have a wonderful new year ♥

Thanks for the insights in this video. As a person who just enjoys art and has no hope of becoming a pro I guess I trip up on that train of thought. Often precision equals details, in my limited knowledge. And most artists are like, don't worry about detail, don't zoom in when you paint, use the broadest strokes/largest brushes, use gesture, don't start rendering too much, only put details or higher contrast in the focal point, etc. Like, everyone seems to tell me to not make a lot of decisions right at the beginning of a piece. Your idea of planning things out carefully before you even add a lot of elements such as values and colors makes sense but it is not often found. I have asked around the internet, how can I grow to if not love at least to appreciate tools like Illustrator or 3D? They feel utterly sterile to me, with no personality, fluidity, naturalness. I believe your video nudged me in the right direction, even though I still don't see myself planning a whole painting using vectors and lines. (As a beginner I still struggle to transition from drawing to painting, and line dependency is a major problem).

Im so happy my job requires me to slow down and work with vectors and pen tools. Im revisiting painting and photoshop with a different eye for quality and a better ability to organize/set up my work flow before hand so that I can essentially "chill" during the heavy lifting part of the process

Huh... when I took my first digital painting class during my game art degree, the instructor pushed us to rush through quickly. We took her word for it since she's worked on a lot of AAA games and some films as a concept artist. In general, most of the instructors insisted on knocking these out quickly, and they weren't really questioned since they did run their own businesses or recently worked on games and movies. This DOES apply to illustration, but to what extent does it apply to concept art since you have to knock out the pieces quickly?
