In this video, I show you the right way to sand wood with a random orbital sander. You'll also learn about the different types of sandpaper, and grits, how to hold the sander, and how to move it across the wood.
All of these are extremely important to get the best finish possible in your project.

Lots of great information. You hear a lot about how important sanding is, but I've never seen it broken down like this. Thanks for showing the various examples. That was very informative!

Thank you! I wish I had found your channel before I started my dresser-turned-potting bench project. This sanding information is extremely helpful. I stopped at 150 and was going to buy stain today, but now I know that I need some 220 grit discs to finish my sanding first. Also loved your introduction to the miter saw on another video. Well done!

This was excellent. So comprehensive and explained all the no-no's to avoid. I'm glad I saw this before my big sanding project this weekend! The example of the stain was so helpful, and the tip to never skip more than a certain number of grit.

I've been sanding projects for 33 years and I didn't know some of the stuff you talked about. Thank you for explaining so much. I will try not to skip sandpaper grits too drastically from now on.

very informative as usual, thank you. I think the best point you made is the one about sanding between coats of paint. This makes a big difference in the final finish surface of whatever was painted. I always found that the most important time to do this is after the first coat because of the wood grain gets lifted from the paint. Sanding can be very therapeutic…😀

I'm about to take on a big sanding project, so this was really helpful. Does the type of wood also affect how to sand? I need to sand several CLT pieces and know that CLT is a soft wood. Any tips for that?

How do you know when it's time to move onto the next grit? Say you're sanding a 4x8, you won't be drawing with a pencil on the whole board.
