I am the coffee guy in my group of friends, so I do pour over coffee, even on the trail. Yes, that includes a a handheld manual grinder, and whole beans 😂

After at least 40 years of experimentation, the pour over - this is the Melitta system - is the all around best, by far. Easy, quick, simple, packable, and great tasting. I do it every day, almost without exception. I keep wondering, "Why did it take so long for others to figure this out?" Another worthwhile method, you did not mention, is worth trying. I call it cowboy coffee, although cowgirl or just cowperson coffee will do. Fill a larger pot, like your classic percolator, with water, add your coffee to the top, and bring it to a boil. Just to a boil. Once it turns over a time or two, turn the flame off and let it set, maybe 2 or 3 minutes, and slowly pour a cup. There will be grounds, but amazingly few. Pretty darn good coffee, partner. Thanks for the great videos. You are quickly becoming my favorite camp and pack video person.

For car camping, nothing beats the percolator for ambiance, aroma, and a good pot of coffee. Low and slow over the flame is key to avoid bitterness. I also have some vintage "dripolators" that are an old-school take on the pour-over. I use those at home once in a while.

I like Pacific Packers Medium Roast individual pour over coffee packets for backpacking. Aero press is a ‘go to’ for regular travel. But will have to try Alpine Start now as well. Love the channel!

My favorite for car camping is currently a Moka pot, but for backpacking I've been using either the GSI java drip or instant packets, depending on how many mornings I'll have on trail. Nice that you included a percolator for a look back at old school coffee!

I think for me, simple pour over is the way to go. It's the easiest, most compact if you get a collapsible one, and is delicious if you have good grounds. Great video :)

Thanks for the tour! My preference is what I use at home: pour over using fresh ground beans. Easy and easy to clean up/pack out grounds. I'd rather take caffeine pills than drink instant, but that's just me.

For instant coffee I’ve found buying the bulk containers of the powder, then I carry a smaller plastic jar that I’ll pour just what I need for the trip and number of people into. That’s nice because it’s not quite as wasteful the single serves, you can also mix creamer or sweetener into the instant coffee for convenience too. That can also make cheaper instant coffees more tolerable. Nice for guiding because if you assume everyone in a small crew is going to want some, then some don’t actually want it, it’s not a whole lot of extra weight anyway.

Hey Eric, I consider myself a coffee aficionado and very recently tried something a friend recommended, it's Nescafe Gold Espresso "instant" coffee. I've NEVER had anything to do with instant coffee ever, but this Espresso is actually incredibly good!..authentic taste, bold and heavy and creamy to boot. Ciao☕

Yo E, great fun topic. Nothing like a good cuppa in the outdoors. Admittedly I like a good instant package for the simplicity of dealing with the waist but will also pack the extra weight if I'm going to get some fireside chill time. A hand grinder and the aeropress work a treat. Someone else mentioned the Moka pot which is also a fun mud maker and you should definitely check out an ibrik/cezve and "Turkish" style coffee for the trail, it's the original "cowboy" coffee and an amazing treat too. Trangia kettle (0.6l for backpacking), good, rough/corse grind coffee and hot water - cowboy coffee. Couldn't be simpler and no extra bits to carry as I use the kettle for boiling water for meals etc. Nice video, enjoyed looking at the espresso maker, that did look cool!

Current version is usually more of a cowboy coffee where you pour the grounds in the pot of water and boil them and then use a gsi strainer. I’m cooking for multiples though. As a staunch hater of the starbux via I can appreciate the comparison you made to the alpine start from rei… I’ll head over this afternoon and grab a pack to try!!! My wife is partial to the French press so that’s what we use in the rv…

I've tried all of these over many years and the Aeropress is my favorite overall.

One thing I've been doing lately, for car camping at least, is make cold brew at home and then just bring that already made! Just an extra bottle in the cooler with a nice concentrate, then just add water and heat as desired. I have an aeropress but haven't ever actually brought it camping yet. I'll have to try that out soon I reckon! Thanks for the video! I'd not seen the french press thinger here before at all.

I'm a daily aeropress user so it comes to camp! I haven't backpacked yet but I got some of those Kuju single serve pour overs for my first trip

This is such an important topic for true coffee lovers!! I love the MSR Mug Mate which I guess is sort of a hybrid between a pour over and French press. But lately I’ve been just taking freeze-dried on longer trips to avoid packing out the grounds. (How do you deal with the grounds?) I like Mt. Hagan, but find I need a packet and a half. I’ll have to try the Alpine. Also love percolated coffee. I have a percolator dedicated to sit over the fire when car camping.

Trader Joe's has a pretty good instant coffee. LOL Eric this is awesome. I am a coffee freak and I am always looking for a fun way to make coffee camping w our scouts. I'm actually considered the Troop barista... Love doing different types for everyone. I have even brought out the Bialetti Moka express, and some others. I’ve been percolating coffee while camping for many years. I’ve been camping since I was 2 weeks old. My mom’s recipe was to let it percolate for 9 minutes after if begins to come to a full colored perk. My favorite is a pour over. I bought this pour over type that uses a reusable k-cup for while car camping. I have a coffee rocket pour over for hiking, but have yet to use it this year. I’m waiting to try it out! I like real coffee and don’t care for instant.

I got an NCamp percolator through bespoke post last year and have enjoyed the coffee I get from that. I've got no issue making coffee right on the campfire with.

I've been using an Aeropress at home for a few years now, so I picked up an Aeropress Go for use outdoors. They're much smaller and self contained, but still make damn fine coffee.

Missed out on making Cowboy coffee. You have to give it a try.

I have so many ways to make "good" coffee that I have a storage bin just for them. 😂 Pour over is my favorite for myself, but French press for a group. If I am able I will take whole beans and a grinder to make it "extra good!"

We like the Aeropress on our trips - though it's a little bulky, the plunger is hollow, so you can stash several cups worth of grounds and filter papers in it.

Great video. I was thinking the whole time, if he is drinking all these cups, he isn’t going to blink the rest of the day. My favorite camping coffee is cowboy coffee, but I have to be at least be making 6 cups. If I’m backpacking the teabag style coffee…I normally boil water then, add it to two teabags in my GSI Infinity mug, then break camp and it is ready to go!

French press coffee all the way, having a jetboil i just added the plunger addon...works like a charm and fits inside the jetboil i already pack and takes up no extra space

As a mild coffee snob, I haven't really looked into what method of brewing I like the taste of best. I've had Alpine start before and I'm happy with it, though I need to use two packets in one cup of coffee because of how strong I like my coffee so it would be rather wasteful and expensive for me. At home I use a pour over because it cost me $10 plus filters. Never used French press myself, but I've had and enjoyed French press coffee in the past. Ultimately though, I will never drink coffee in the backcountry. Not because of any factor I stated above, but because coffee makes me need to use the bathroom real bad after about a half hour to an hour drinking it. A trivial issue at home, but for me the hassle outdoors outweighs the benefits I get out of it.

instant tasters packets choice for backpacking or if I'm the only one drinking coffee. if I'm car camping there are enough coffee drinkers so I use the percolator. that smell of fresh coffee brewing in a camp morning is so good!

I do more hot tea than anything else, but I really like the way that French press works out.

While camping my favourite way to make coffee is either the pour over or the mokka pot 🍮 And while backpacking it's also the instant coffee packs 😉

I like the Aeropress Go at home or car camping. For backpacking, I've brought the GSI Java Drip and some Hario V60 filters. I might go back to Shug's way and bring Medaglia D'Oro Espresso Instant Coffee.

I would get the Picopresso over the Nano. smaller, lighter, and it does a better job. Just get a 51mm puck screen and replace the portafilter basket with a la pavoni 51mm basket (I suggest IMS) for best results. Plus you can grab a Nanofoamer V2 for cappuccino on the trail.

Alpine Start is my backpacking coffee. Sometimes for a treat I add a little hot chocolate powder to it.

I am a big fan of Alpine Start, but when car camping I do slow pour over using v60 filters

My go to is a cappuccino : - strong coffee with a moka Italian machine (really thin grounded coffee + stamp) i put kind of 2 shots in my mug ! - in a small French press i put half of warm milk and you shake the milk with the press so you had a good foam ! I pour it in my mug and I get a nice cappuccino !

The very, very, very best part of the Aeropress is the grounds puck. Easiest cleanup ever. Backpacking, I used Cusa Coffee (and Tea). They did a peppermint mocha last winter that was amazing. Trader Joe's coffee packets work in an emergency, but I prefer unsweetened coffee. If a short overnight, lugging the Aeropress.

That nanopresso is interesting. I’m currently an instant when camping, though I have my grandpa’s old enamel percolator for car camping. I’m really trying to decide if I upgrade with anything for kayak camping.

I usually prefer the french press taste over the pour over but i take my sweetass time with it and really let it brew, i also dont plunge it all the way, i just push it down 20% or so then pour after its ready. Its a calming process to me to make a great french press brew.

The bloom of a pour over is the best.

My mind is still blown away by Cusa freeze dried cold brew. Best coffee I have had while backpacking. Works great hot or cold. In fact when my stove broke on my last trip I still had great coffee. Is it as good as brewing my own? No I can brew better. But it’s really close. Since it requires no equipment, it packs super light. Love love love it.

I have been using Wildland Coffee for a while now and really like it. It is a large tea bag making it simple to transport and brew with no clean up. I have no connection to them other than enjoying the coffee, but will gladly send you a couple of cups from my stash for you to try.

Historically when i camped with my dad it was cowboy coffee, if we were base camping it would be a percolator. Right now I'll probably go pour over but I've never heard of the aeropress which seems wonderful.

I would add the NCamp or GSI Moka pots, titanium French press, MSR mug filter, aero press with Joes espresso adapter 😉👍

I have been eating chocolate covered espresso beans mixed with a trail mix to get my caffeine fix. This does away with cleanup, equipment, and waste. It's best in the spring and fall when I cold soak.

I, like you, tend to go instant. But, I have a friend who brought a coffee grinder and we did a pour over. It really was better. Honestly, I may try this in the future. I liked your pour over filter system. I may have to try something like that. The grinder adds a little extra weight but if you split it with a hiking buddy it will reduce the weight for everyone and you can still make a couple of cups of really good coffee.

The BruTrek pour over looks like the one SnowPeak sells, but that cloth filter looks interesting. For Aeropress, try the Fellow Prismo attachment to take it to another level.

Check out the Kalita Kantan single use filters. It is a paper filter with a cardboard frame. Just add ground coffee and water. Only makes a small coffee but its a level up from instant on the trail.

Do you have a favorite instant coffee with creamer and sweetener included in the single serving packet? Found a couple out of South Korea but they sort of weak. I add a second packet of the Folgers instant to the cup for the right blend for me in a 12 ounce mug

I have been struggling with this topic since I recently started backpacking again with my son. I was about to buy a pour over system which seems to be the way to go, but I have seen sooo many different ones. I was looking at the Sea to Summit or GSI one since they don't require a filter and they are light and small. But is there an advantage to the paper filters and extra weight of the larger metal ones?

I like to have a bit more quality coffee, I would probably pick the OVLNDR travel press. Pretty sweet system.

Fun alternative method is the jogo straw. Fun lightweight way.

Love my aeropress, but if it a longer trip I will reach for instant. The percolator is a good one when in the RV though.

Black Rifle Coffee Company makes good instant. I agree, pour over is excellent.

I steep my coffee using drawstring tea bags. As I like a bit of milk in my coffee, I premix the ground coffee with powdered milk and a bit of sugar, or sometimes hot cocoa powder. In the morning, I just put my prepped tea bag in my cup, pour the hot water in and let it steep for 3-4 minutes while doing other camp chores. Works for me.

I take Nescafé in a reusable bottle. It is instant and can be purchased in large quantities at Costco. I have used percolater when car camping and that is great too I have tried Starbucks via, but wasn’t enough better than Nescafé instant for the price per cup.

Having worked in coffee for many years, pour over with a Swiss Gold Cone was by far my favorite but unfortunately you can't buy those anymore. The flavor of a french press without the sediment and without the added flavor of a paper filter. Also Peet's Sulawesi-Kalosi FTW!

I have a percolator that I use when I'm car camping and use instant when I'm backpacking. My challenge is creamer (my stomach doesn't do well with the acidity)... I'm still struggling to find one that doesn't taste like burnt milk!

I have to say that I really enjoy taking the time to make coffee at home but when I’m back packing, I’ve been trying to pour over message and while it does make a really good cup of coffee, I find it quite a hassle to bring along all that coffee, as well as having to deal with the grounds and the cleanup. I have to admit for backpacking that the instant coffee does seem to win out.

I'd love a proper shot of espresso in the morning but I can't justify the extra kit. I'd be more likely to try the pourover but I feel that could get messy carrying the waste? I've only, just this weekend, tried out Coffee bags and that's my thing now. No extra weight as they are just coffee grounds in a, slightly larger (tea)bag. I only took one bag per day and it was great.😊

I like my little turkish coffee pot. Its small, light and it gives me an excuse to use the Israeli coffee from my buddy. I'm an AeroPress fan at home but i am not loyal to any method. As long as I drink my coffee, everone has a better day.
